Well, I know its nearing the end of this and a little late to be starting a new thread, but I was so inspired by the art coming out of this challenge that I had to enter. I'd been toying with doing a JP dinosaur as soon as I heard the theme, but obligations at work kept me from starting something I might not be able to finish.

Well, I had a look at the deadline, and I have about two weeks. And for me that is still long enough to come up with something. So, I started looking at the work from Small Soldiers, and I realized that I'd completely forgotten how creepy this movie actually was.

Here is a small sampling of reference, here from screengrabs of the movie downloaded from ITunes. I'm also lucky enough to have a friend who lent me The Winston Effect.

I'm starting out with Major Chip Hazard:

And if anyone is like me and hadn't seen this movie since it was in theaters in 1998, here are a few images that show just how phenomenal the creatures and characters created for this movie actually are:

So CREEPY!

On to the work:

I like to primarily work in Zbrush:

I did a timelapse of this, which you can see on my website if interested:

To get out of Maya as fast as possible, I spent hours tweaking this fabulous base mesh:

Here is a render of that:

Since that timelapse, I've retopologized and changed a few things. I've also started working on the body. I'll try to post that stuff later on today.

And I just want to comment to everyone else doing this challenge or keeping up with it:
I love doing challenges, but keeping up with the work that everyone else is making is even more fun. I believe that friendly competition keeps us on our toes as artists, and I feel lucky that we have these types of competitions. Good luck to everyone participating, and thanks!

Cool choice :) And I luv the base mesh lol

Main crit is the head sculpt looks a tad too thin and long compared to the ref, think it shows particualrly on the nose. Look forward to updates :)

Very nice. I like the nice Sharpe crisp edges.

Base mesh is great, but to be honest I think there's a bit too much definition for such an early stage...

looks good. I think you´re getting the right style.

I tried to download the vid, but it only saves my a 385 Byte File...could there be something wrong with the link on your page or with the file on the server?

Thanks for trying to share that anyway :)

I agree with above posts. The surface style and edges are nice for the toy quality. I think if you work on the facial proportions with the ref (ie the horiz length of the eyes vs. the vert length of the nose... the ref has the nose shorter than it is now) than the combination of the two will make for a very nice peice.

Good Luck!
