View Full Version : Environment: At the top of the city
PhilOsirus 08-31-2008, 04:29 AM Started this yesterday. Basically the idea is, maybe in the far future when buildings are so complex and massive, there will be an architectural style that seeks to emulate buildings of the 21st century? So what you see is a massive city block with no roads or any major separation, a typical building in those days, but on the top are more "traditional" (to us) buildings, each standing separately from one another and with an artistic orientation instead of being first and foremost about functionality and use of space.
I'm not sure how "finished" the final image will look, I'm still trying to develop a technique that allows me to quickly make concepts as below, and then polish them until I am satisfied.
Please ignore the ugly black foreground for now;)

Thank you!
Here is a very small update, I started to define two of the buildings a bit (I must fix some perspective issues):

Love the idea.
I think that you could communicate it better with a background of these city block cubes (which would also aid your perspective troubles) whilst pushing the scale a bit more. At the moment they have the potential to be massive but are lost a little bit. If you can see what I mean?

While the backstory helps a LOT, I still cannot wrap my mind around the concept based upon what my eye sees...
Part of this is placement. What is it the viewer is looking out of to see this? The bits and pieces and curve on the LH side merely place the viewer outside of the picture plane. They do not integrate the viewing point to the image.
Your horizon line is crooked and your perspective lines look wonky. Do you have any type of perspective grid, or is this all "freehand eyeball?" With this many hard edges, I'm sure you realize the importance of a consistent and accurate perspective...
Why are you wasting time playing with detail on the buildings, when you have so much foundational work that needs to be firmed up first? Detailing is the icing on the cake. You still haven't even put all the ingredients in the bowl, much less baked the thing, yet!
Clean up your horizon and your perspective. Fill in the background, like a sky, and whatever you need to add to put some proportion to this. Those buildings do not convey great mass at present. They more resemble game pieces set on a white tablecloth with a strong light from behind. You need to make your backstory more visible in the image.

DoomedSeraph: Yes I must definitly add a second level of the imposing city block, a bit higher, maybe two more. Something like that.
CybrGfx: You are right on all counts. As far as detailing is concerned, sometimes I like to detail a part of the image that I feel would help define the whole image so I can see right away if I "get it", basically, do I really have a clear idea of the styles of the building, do I want to make them wilder, etc. I don't plan on detailing the whole image now. For example I was toying with the idea of making all of the "feet" of the buildings identical in shape and size, only what is on top of them would be different in design, etc. But yes you are right I must first focus on proper perspective, altho right now it seems very wrong because it looks like I meant to make the top of the buildings straight but they are actually at an angle. Anyway I'm working on the perspective right now. As for where the viewer is, you are right, the thing on the left is there because I had the idea of having some foreground, so it's just a pitch, but definitly I need to give it some meaning and place it properly in relation to where the viewer is standing. Consider it just a reminder for myself that I want something close:) The design of that thing clashes with the rest too, small details when it looks like most of the city is sleek. Also we seem to be higher than everything, which is contradictory to the idea. I'll have to think of that! I think we will be looking over the city from a flying vehicle passenger's view, probably looking onto what could in the end be the "edge" of the city. I'll have to think of some sort of window frame that doesn't take too much from the image. I'll think of this later, it's just an extra layer in a way.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, another update later this week, I don't have much time these days (work project coming to an end).
