Hello, guys.

This is my first post here in cgtalk.
I did this test to lern something about IK/FK blending on 3D Max 5.1.
Check it out:

http://3dmentes.net/boanoite/Zemaria.avi

I did not animate the face. I would like you to tell me if the blending is visible.

Very nice!

I love the tremor in the limbs! My only critique is when he's on one arm I would tilt the body so that the body mass would be shifted to his right side, right now he's just lifting the left arm... but considering the position on the chair he might fall if he did not keep the current pose... dilemma... still a bit of tilt would be nice... and when he falls I think I might like it better if it was a bit faster (there is not as much weight / gravity as in the rest of the animation).

Anyway very very nice!

Thanx guys.

Check this:

a preview with the end effectors. See how they go strange when the IK is turned off.

hahaha, very nice. I love it when he looks in the camera for a sec when he starts showing off. Also when he tries to correct his balance when he's about to fall, nice touches

It all looks really nice, funny character and great little details, untill he falls. Than either gravity has suddenly changed or the characters bodyweight has. My guess is that you video'd the action and than used that as a reference for the clip, but that the original model refused to fall down so that had to be improvised, am I right?

Either way it's still a very funny clip, inviting to be looked at over and over again.

Thanks for the post.

Ps: I could of course be absolutely wrong, in which case I beg your forgiveness and hope you could tell us how you 'did' organise it all.

Nice rig...an IK/FK blend in the feet can be very usefull. Too many people leave that out of their rigs and seem to worry only about this feature with the arms.

Great work! The only problem I really see is the fall. When his head hits the chair, his whole body bounces up along with his head, which makes it look floaty. His body should still be falling, uninterupted and his head would get kicked up a bit.

Nice though!

I really have no idea of what goes into IK/FK blending or what any of it means.. but if that's the result of it than I'd say it's pretty cool stuff! That looked great!

Amazing animation skills. I cant say anything about IK/FK blend, as im not an animator, but it really looks awesome. Some touches are just increadable.

Good stuff!

I am upgrading to Max5.1 and rigging is one of the points I intend to study first. How good was Max for learning this type of skill?

To all: What are the best sources for tutorials on rigging a character with Max 5.1?

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's excellent. I just started my first CA animation. Any tips!!! Thanks.

Oh, and I don't have a FK/IK setup. Can I still do CA without it?

Question: I'm using ElectricImage Universe. I don't know if it's the way I rigged, the program, my lack of knowledge, or lack of constraints, but I get a little pop when I extend the IK arms fully straight. Just a small snap as it's locks into the elbow joint.

It's there a general way I can avoid this? Like do you bind to skin with elbows slightly bent or should It be straight? Or maybe I should have a viscosity, limitation or stiffiness value to the elbow. Do I just avoid going extending the arm completely straight?

I like it. in the first one I didnt notice the blend at all. but I have 0 experience in animation.

to the guy about the tutorial. try the Joan of Arc tut. being that i am not a max guy I dont know what version this is for but it is for max. I think it does a step by step rigging(im not sure) but i know it shows you how to do Weight painting witch i would imagin is quite helpfull.

sorry but i dont know of any others

Wow, fascinating animation marciowsk!

What attracted my attention was the way he falls down on the ground in the End of the short. The right leg behaves a little strange.
But I really can be wrong, doen`t know anything about animation and never saw a person falling down a chair :)

Hilariously fun! Nice jo, I couldn't tell even where IK was used and FK started, I think you accomplished your goal.

Just out of curiosity, Did you use multiple rigs tied together with expressions/scripts?

I was thinking of having a full IK rig in my character, with a secondary FK rig for the arms...Just curious..

Love the animation.

Hello guys,

Thanx for the coments. (thanx for the little banner too!)

Well, as you can see on preview with the end effectors, I use ik to animate de arms. On legs, I did the blend when he put the feet in the air.
I agree with you when you said that the weight is not perfect when he falls. I changed weight for funny. But ok, I was lazy :) I didn't animate the fingers when he falls. :P . Motion blur saved it all.
I didn't use any reference. I animated it straight ahead totally. I never knew what would be the next movement until I create it.
The character and rig was done by my husband, Alex Paiva (just kidding, Alex). It's for our new short film, called "Boa noite" ("Good Night") and this is a simple model of "Ze Maria". he is very different right now.

Thanx once again, people. I will post more stuff soon. Meybe old stuff, ok?

Regards and sorry about my english

I loved it .. great animation, the way he looked at us and the hand stand and trying to correct his balance.

and yep .. I've done that ... not the animation .. I "tried" walking on the arm of the chair bit. I was 13 and started into the hand walk and when I shifted hands the chair tipped over. I broke my arm and the arm of the chair, ** hangs head in shame ** I was also grounded for two weeks on top of it. talk about insult to injury.

again... excellent

great animation work marciowski!

I just happen to be a gymnast and a gymnastics coach.....the press through to handstand looks very good, but I would agree that the character would need to center thier weight over the right arm (called posting)as they shift to one arm, or slightly seperate their legs to offset the balance........but as soon as they do I'm sure that chair would be bouncing all over the place....also, in the handstand once you hit the top the legs tend to arch slightly over backwards from the waste if the arms and body are in one line...
GReat WOrk....
I once saw a guy in Cirque Du Soliel do a similar balancing act with 10 or 15 chairs and a table....it was really cool!

i am just curious but for all of the wobbleing. did you do all of that by hand. or did you just do the main animation my hand and do some sort of Wobble thing to it. you know one of those "on a click of a button" sort of deal.

please excues me if I am totally wrong. but the only animation i have done is like of a few objects moving around. and that is my whole animation backround right there.

06-06-2003, 09:28 PM
Ayanami,

I did all the animation with my right hand. The letf hand gave us some help to. I hope technology do not go faster enough to make this kind of thing became "wobblable".

Titan,
I believe in you. But this chair is magic:rolleyes: !!!

Unclebob,
tsk tsk... Did anyone record it?
'
Hey people! Do not try to do that at home:shame:

Thanxs everybody
