Hello all, I thought it about time to start a sketchbook thread on cgtalk. I am a student at SMU Guildhall, so any critique is wanted, appreciated, encouraged, you get the idea, especially with graduation only a few scant months away.

Here are some previous works:

Cool!! How can I have missed this.. (Oh I know they made this part into a sub sub forum... )

Great style, and good atmosphere.. (not too sure about the way the background in the citypicture looks, I think it is below par and looks rushed)
would love to create that green wearing girl character in 3d but then with an asian ethnicity which I think will add to the concept.

Quick question is this concept going to be used for anything? Is there already someone who is making this for a game or a portfolio or whatever?

Would be great if you would share some more work. I like it

Thaks for the comments matsman, I agree with you on both counts about the city drawing, it was done in a very limited timeframe for sure.

The project with the girl (I named her character Tempest, if you are curious) was a Direct Focus Study project for the SMU program. Supposedly I was contacted on another forum by a modeller who wanted to give the character a try, but I never heard back. Essentially the concept art is just for my own benefit, my portfolio, or practice, or whatever it becomes.

Thanks for the post though, and plpease stop back anytime to check what I am working on...

Speaking of here is a quick speed paint I did.

My oh my... nice quickpaint... in thumbnail size it is indistinguishable from a photo and a cool pose too.

Not too sure about the Boudicca though... I don't think it is finished yet. Some better shading on the sandal strips to start with, I also liked the harder blue more actually and the sword is just getting started.. why does the yellow colour overlap the girl BTW?? that's just plain forgetful laziness that is.

Also something I could've spotted on the earlier one, maybe beef up the knees a little bit. They look very, very thin. Thinner than her ankles actually...

Anyway something I need to ask, would you mind if I gave tempest a shot, but with the asian look? (I kinda already started  ) but it is the right way to ask permission isn't it.
It will be fairly low poly and keeping the textures simple and stylised... I'm not going for full sculpted detail since it will be just a quick side project to see how fast I can make something. I can however more or less promise it's going to be finished within a month from now.

Let me know what you say?

Thanks!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/RogueXMan/rp_character_model_sheet_02.jpgYeah uh whoops! LOL guess the layers got switched around with the sword. Guess that's what comes with an average of 5 hours of sleep a night. :P

Thanks again for the critique. :)

As for Tempest, go for it!!! I'd love to re-concept the character as an Asian girl for you, but I'm swamped in work for school. Please keep me updated with your progress if you don't mind.

By the way, I did revise the turn-around sheet to make it portfolio quality. Everything should line up just about perfectly in this version.

THanks! If you don't mind I'll post links to wip images here, not too many or I'll be hogging your thread. But enough to keep you informed.

On the template I noticed from the shoulders up isn't completely in the middle, but I'm used to work with worse reference material (one photo with one angle for instance).

What I do miss is a side view of the arm. Great they aren't blocking the side view but it would be nice to have a better idea of the top of the glove and to check my own anatomy from that angle.

Also two sideshots aren't really neccesary, one will do, the details are quite clear on the front and back... (psst the top is the same in both instances and that is not what the front view communicates) Also the patches in dark green on her knees front and back?

Anyway I noticed those while modelling, No biggy, and I can do an asian face myself I think... so don't sweat! here's the first wip image, note that the head came from another model and needs to be tweaked still. About 3 hours in. (http://www.matstm.com/CGtalk/Tempest01.jpg)

Thanks for the comments, great tips for fixing things to make it portfolio worthy.

Also the model looks great so far. Are you using Max?

Hej! I think it is already portfolio worthy... but it is not yet fully optimised. BTW what's going on new stuff happening yet?

Here's an update from me... finished modelling and Uv's. So now I start on the textures

Yes I use max, never been a fan of Maya and I am just beginning to understand XSI so everything in max is quicker.

Here's some pictures:

with the modelling nearly done (http://www.matstm.com/CGtalk/Tempest02.jpg)

overview of the last stages (http://www.matstm.com/CGtalk/Tempest04.jpg)

Anyway have good day, will show more when finished and ready to make cool picture.

Hey that's looking great!

I was worried for you about the legging textures, I know circular bands always give me fits.

I have some new stuff indeed, I've just been looking for some time to post it.

I'll try to get the new stuff up this week sometime talk to you soon.

Here are some of the new pieces, as promised. I decided to spend more time on these two pieces, and to add some realism through reference.

Nice! I like it!

still a few crits though... the shadows around the abs of the Amazon are a little dark giving a graphic look to the belly area that is not in the rest of the picture (well the arms have it a little too but that is also distancing them) try for a little softer gradient.

And also the perspective on the cannon of the mech is off... it looks squashed from side to side, because your ellipses are too elongated and not rotated enough. I like the colours on this one though.

I haven't any texture updates yet, some other stuff came in between, stuff I get actually paid for so that takes precedence :)

Cheers!

Hey guys I decided to radically redesign Ben Franklin, and spend a lot more time rendering it out. What do you think?
