Hi.
I forgot to tell you something about the game my character is to be part of. The idea is simple the Dwarf lives in this periiod of human history where all kinds o creatures lardge and small biutiful and ugly strugle to surwive in hudge but dark and gloomy cities. Hes way starts when he see a murder( of nobel dwarf) hes not supose to see and hears a things hes not supose to hear. From now on he is a fugative.

Hi jelwa character haed coming on great. just wondering do you use spline or poly. If you use spline do you know any good tut's coz im a newbie to all 3d

Criogen
06-04-2003, 09:23 PM
ermm...

I think it doesn't look like he uses splines... It's definatly poly modelling.

btw nice work so far, but I think his ears should be more like in concept... more spikey? (don't know the right word ;) )

Kozlov
06-04-2003, 10:18 PM
Hi there,
Thanks Azazel and congratulations for your CG reward togrther with your brother you made a realy great picture, as for my char the idea was to make a dwarf but if he looks kinda goblinish i dont mind realy:). Thanks KayosIII and Oz for warm coments. Slom, Criogen is right this is poly modeling with meshtools. You can download meshtools (this is a script wich is a great help in modeling) free from http://www.max3d.pl/download/skrypty/meshtools_2_5.zip
About the tutorials there are a lot of them i think the most popular is Modelling Joan of Arc by Michel Roger
http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp
but on this site you will find more.
Yes Criogen the ears will improve its shape with time i hope:)
Thanks again
Good luck

HI THERE JELWA.

Very good start. I guess it has a relation with the goblins or so? I mean you could connect the history of this creature with them because it has a bit of a similar look. :D

The wrinkles are very effective and also if you added a little bit more detail to his nose, I believe it would become more efficient. It's you call.. Anyways, great so far. :bounce:

Sincerely

Kozlov

Hi,
thanks Goodlag and Akocan. Maybe you right Akocan about his race. He looks like a goblin because of unplesant apperance. Im not an expert but in my opinion its possible to have a race of dwarfs with such a look. Ill wait until i finish and then decide to wich rece put him.
Thanks again and good luck

Very nice Jelwa..............Clean and interesting to look at model.

Perhaps with time you can give him something more to make him lovable, something to make him more in-dearing to the potential gamers,a device or comical gadget perhaps. Not that he is already well done and designed but in my opinion he needs a bit more warmth to be a lead character in a game. With some comical extra item or two that is integral to him I think you can give people more to care about him. Something like your caveman creations, more warmth, it's just a thought.

Well none the less you have a very good start with him,and I am interested to see him get up-dated.

really nice character jelwa, maybe his hands could be a bit bigger and his forearms a bit thicker. but that depends on how the lower part of his body will look like. as it looks now, you're going for small feets/legs to, so then it's fine. keep going :wip:

Kozlov
06-10-2003, 07:57 AM
Hi,
thx @Fellah, yes his hand can look like they were to small but that is the idea cuz the char. itself is a dwarf, he has a big head (so proportions alredy are broken) If i used his hed as a refrence for seting up the rest of the body he would end up taller and thicker. But everithink is still in progress so can change enytime.
Thanks very much for the comments.
Good luck on your chalange

Virtuoso
06-10-2003, 10:09 AM
Hi jelwa......OK I think you should go with extra big feet, and hands.A character like this just screams GIVE ME BIG FEET & HANDS....Just an opinion, not the rule of course.

;)

I think what you do have is something really nice,a speacial character really, with more time you sure will have something to be proud of.I'll see you soon, keep up with the great effort.

Kozlov
06-10-2003, 04:00 PM
Thanks @Dom the huge head gives him this sort of dwarf look in my opinion. Im not shure about the feet im quite far away from making them. We will see whether bigeer are better than smal.
@Viruoso Thanks again always like your comments:beer: ill make an experiment with the hands but first i have to finish them cuz i gave'em only a shape of hands but no details. Ill do the same with the feet as well.
Take care:beer: :wavey:

I like the face so far... the wrinkles look pretty good. IMO he needs quite a bit more detail in the mouth area, especially inbetween the upper lip and nose. I'm not to sure about the crazy proportions at this point. I'll wait to see some updates to comment further on that.

Virtuoso
06-11-2003, 04:47 AM
Hi jelwa.... You should'nt listen to DimitrisLiatsos telling you not to listen to me...........Really.......;) :p

Actually it's up to you,but remember others too made my suggestions as well to a point,we can only suggest,to each his or her own. I think the character could use large exxagerated hands and feet to go with the head, and the whole toonish theme. It would be a much more intense effect on the whole look. But that's just me.:)

Either way you go small feet/hands or Large feet/hands or somewhere in the middle is all up to you in the end. What you do have already is quite impressive, and shows lot's of potential.See you after another up-date..........and you too Dimi.;)

Kozlov
06-11-2003, 08:11 AM
Thx guys,
@Dimitri-thanks for your support on the proportions, im not yet sure whether to change hands and feet size first i have to model them and then see what ist the best solution.
@Visuablo-thanks, about the wrinkles on the face in the area you mentioned, i didnt model any more with poly but decided to make some bumps istead wich is allowed by the rules of the chalange. I just didnt wanted to exaggerate on this point. And the proportions hmmm, since he is dwarf i thoght to myself that he should have proportions quite like small children have with a bit of comic touch though:beer:
@Virtuoso im realy greatful for every comment i get from others cuz after hours in front of the computer with the same model sometimes you just cant see any mistakes youv made or that there is something missing. But not always i follow the advicecs, this time though maybe i will, but like i said before it will all turn out at the end. :p
Thanks again for support :wavey: :wip:

Hi Jelwa......Well I still think you could have gone the larger hands and feet way. Here is the reason: He is your version of a Dwarf, they are known to have extra large hands and feet, sure not always. There really is no wrong or right here.Actually we are both right,it's all about taste for this praticular model. The route you have taken is not quite the way I would have gone, but still it does'nt mean it's wrong.I just thought that maybe the toon route would have been better for this guy. Or realistic toon, somewhere in-between,my personal favorite. You know a caricature type creation.

:)

But let me tell you...................I still think he is an "A1" job, very nice, great to see, clean modeling, fun design, you have him looking very good indeed.I will look forward to your progress, keep working,it's all very much worth it.

@John Litle Thank you i need that luck with textures or rather with uvw wich i do not like:)
@Virtuoso thanks you to kind, about the hands and feet i tryed that once and simly making them larger is not a gut solution i would have to re-model them a bit to obtain long but bigger an not big and fat hands and feet.Ill try that out and post som samples. Im looking forward to see your teem updataing, great concept(as i said before) is changing in to biutiful third dimention. Keep moving and shaking all that ver. you have there.

Dude, this is looking so cool. But be carefule with the positioning of that dagger. He'll cut his "little dwarf" off.

Still that could be his mission...to find the missing member...:D

Perhaps he could be holding the dagger out from his body at the ready, or sheathed on his back or even on his leg?

Anyway I love the style and it rocks!!! You Rock:buttrock: :buttrock:

the model is totally sweet dude, but.. is just me or is something wrong with the lighting setup in that last one? i must say again.. the model is totally sweet.. i love the eyes, i just think you should make the muscles in the body more salient, no like muscle man!!! but more expressive..you know..
again.. that render does not do justice to the model.. im wainting for more.

Don't you think that your Dwarfs skin looks like babys or old pigs skin? i think that character like this should be more natural, near earth colour, sallow or something. How old is your Dwarf? Must he be so crumple? I suppose that Dwarfs life is hard... this is primitive character. But is his life so hard? His wrinkled skin scary me. Was that your idea?

It really is some of the best work in this challenge. The character and hid trusty steed are very nice together, funny and loks fun to play.

Try and give your textures an extra layer or two.Something softer that can show through, and add depth to the skin tone and color.Tone down the color a bit. I'll wait and see for another up-date to give you more tips if I can.

All in all it's all very nice work.Fun and just plain interesting.

HI,
@ MIko, nice have you back, well i havent seen a pig lately so cant tell if his skin looks like a pig skin, but i can tell you that the red colour at first was just a temporary solution, with time i realized that it looks quite alright( there are stil som areas to fix and colors to reduce) but i ll lieave him with the red face ....and his life is hard bolive me being such a small creature i a world full of large humans can be tough. His not so old, aroud 80 that will be hmmmmm let seee around 25 our human time. Thanks for coments hope to hear fromypu soon. Adn dont sory your english is great, i make a lot of mistakes.
@Virtuoso yea im working on the rest of the skin layers, toned down the color and changed the lightnig.
Im thinking of a tattoos on his chest and arms, like tribe or maori ones.
Iv spoted some areas around the ears that need to be fixed and that the bumb map is set to low (on the ears) ill fix that.
Thanks for support Virtuoso.
@Acocan that is a idea, at the beggining i was going to make a erth like color of the skin but decided to change it cuz i havent seen a red Dwarf yet, and evan if its not the first one in the history for me will be a first Red Dwarf ever. Thanks.

Thanks for very nice comments me very happy you like it:)
@Colin, thats right rest of the map stuff comming, plus some more unwraping and texturing tomorow among other things specular map. The dry looking skin was the goal but it needs some depth tough, it will be fixed with additional maps i think.

Ok Jelwa..............Looking better every time. And it's looked good to begin with. This is one of my fav's right now with a small handful. It's got character,it's got a strange humor,a bit scary, grotesque, but all very good things.Your modeling is very good, and your style has more to it than most that I see out there. You have that certain "IT" that cannot always be taught.

As for the textures they are getting close.Layers Jelwa, layers.A little more specular is needed.he just looks like he would be a bit greasy, wet, damp, sweaty.

You have however gotten closer with this last up-date,it's looking better all the time.

I'll send you a PM,and show you a great help in texturing with many layers, and really be helpful. So look for it real soon.

Anyways.................very,very good work here Jelwa.

This is wrincles test, high res 1600z1200, there is a vein map but needs some improvements, no specular map yet. I know thr dry skin :) it will change i promise. The dif map is temp. just to have the same color, im intend to make him lighter on the chest, under arm, and stomach some parts of thr legs as well. The tatoo will go from the back to the front around thr neck just like japaniese tatoos. I hope you ll like it.

07-03-2003, 04:46 AM
Hi Jelwa......Well again it's only getting better.Really geting it to look great.I think you need to also soften the tissue a little. I think that is what is still left to do to really be very much top notch.

Just a tip:He is an older guy right jelwa? What I would do is soften the tissue by using the "Burn Tool" with about a 30 to 35 pixel brush diameter. Then you should darken the higher wrinkles around the seams, the edges, high points. The skin will look much more flexible or pliable, and much softer.

Also add a little specular.I think he needs more of a moist appearance,a bit more shiny, just a touch at least.

Well it's just getting nicer all the time Jelwa, really nice fun rough tough old guy.Keep going it's all really very good. Also get his transport/beast finished if possible.

OK see you soon, very nice job here.

@Fist, the vehicle isnt finished yet and i hope to make it ready before the deadline. It is not as detailed as my Dwarf because will be covered with fur and there was no need of adding an extra details. Im glad you like it. As for the bump level, well i have to tell you that im satisfied with the result, i know that you dont like it but imo its allright:)thx
@Wilson 3D, well i didnt think about the name, but i think he needs one hmmmm have no idea at the moment but ill try to create one. Thx for nice words it make me keep going.

Hi jelwa........Well this is one of my favorites. This little guy is quite a fun and interesting looking little guy.A bit ugly, but speacial in appearance, you won't miss him in a crowd.Quite fierce as well, looks pretty tough. Also a noble look in some way now that I look at him.like he really is a good guy fighting the good fight.

I still think you should create a more sweat gleaned look to the texture, more wet, moist, not too much but a touch would really give him a more pliable flesh like look to the skin.

Also the veins are very nice....but....you knew there had to be a but.:p With veins you would want to gradually build up the height on the bump with lots of strokes so the vein is more rounded.

Use the smudge tool to pull out the ends of the vein so ou get more of a taper, which is more natural looking. You should also do a seperate bump texture in case you want to animate expressions later down the road.

I think you should also darken the area around the eyes a little, you want the eyes to be the thing that stands out..........Use the burn tool with a brush diameter of about 90-100 pixels.

You can change a light color on your bump textures to darker colors by using a new layer with a mulitiply layer blend.

One more thing you can try is to give an additional complimentary color to your existing color. It will really define your existing look.

The ears too are in need of more intense color, they are always more bright due to more blood that flows there.Set the brush color to RGB 160,130,50,or so,and paint small strokes across the tops of the wrinkles, they will be more noticable and much more saturated looking.Try a little more dark color to spice it up.

Also lighten the specularity texture by using exposures no greater than 50%.I think you have used higher levels by looking at your texture. It seems that the texture has a very sharp contrast, which makes the skin look a little too stone or wood like.

Well anyways it sounds like alot, but actually you are quite close, this model is already very good,in fact excellent, but it needs just that little more attention to these minor things, with this it will be spectacular I think.

get him to the finish line Jelwa, you are close, but already have a very very nice entry,I really like the whole guy very much.OK see you soon.

You are just really good Jelwa...............you got style that few have. You got talent in modeling as well to high levels. Also your texturing is very good,we will talk more of that in the coming weeks as we talked of right...........;)

I like Genesis Max's thought on the hair,it should have grey,as he is a little older, mix it in.

The texturing has come along well, very close to perfect,we will get to it a bit more with more time after this challenge with our secret project.;)

Hey Jelwa :)

I tried replying to your email, but for some reason the email bounced back - there seems to be a problem with your mail server!

Anyway, since there is only a day or so left, and that means that time is precious, I thought I'd post what I said in my email regarding the specularity problem here in the forum...

I think I know exactly what your problem is - are you using just radiosity for your render? Because with many renderers, when you switch to global illumination radiosity types, it actually cancels out the lighting in your scene. And because of that, no specular highlights show up because the model is being lit by an environment and not actual lights. To counteract this, try using your specular map as a reflection map instead (in other words, instead of putting it in your specular channel, put it in your reflection one), and give it an environment to reflect. You might have to decrease the textures intensity so that it doesn't become mirror-like, but it works really well. In fact, skin generally looks a whole lot better when using reflection maps instead of specular maps ;)

Cheers and good luck! Let me know if you still need any help :)

Well here it is, but its not finished, i mean i had to stop rendering process cuz there were no time and the result was a half made render with black unrendered squers around so i had to do something about but i had only 15 min left, I opened PS and made those black thing to cover the squers. Im not happy with the result but it was the only way to be on time.
Take care and good luck everyone. I have to change my machine:)http://tgory.net/bootchec/ylva/final.jpg
