View Full Version : New GI glass test
Hello
Iīm preparing a new article (czech) for my server on new transparency absorption options and I did a simple absorption test. GI "caustics" looks really nice I think.
Lights: 0
there is one rectangle plane with luminance (and rectangle gradient for softening) and hdri map
Cheers P
Enjoy your tea!

Gorgeous as always! You're a brilliant pioneer for C4D methods and techniques. This is beautifully done aswell, and very impressive for no lights.
I'm not seeing any render artefacts either.
Very good.

i cant see the image?
But glass is now looking amazing in R11....worth the upgrade alone for me.
here is a new test of absorption of the tea...
I love tea!

NIce work pdzm. Not sure what your deadline is, but it might be a nice touch to put in some etching on the glass. Or somehow make the glass more stylized. Just an idea. :)

about dead line - I do it for my new article for Pixel magazine - as a new glass options demonstration...

PS: I got exactly these cups and other from my loved aunt to my wedding before 16 months - she died before a month :-(. I do it really very close to original

how long take to render caustic in new r11 ?
I put some colored glas material to object, target light and select caustic to render.
GI with caustic calculate very long and i stop render. buah...

No milk? what about sweetners? sugar? :)
Love those tests, one things for sure with R11 we've certainly got a brilliant new renderer on our hands :)

Hello to Poland
it depends on GI settings, I usually use a pretty low GI settings and I get really fast renders. But if you want to achieve really nice caustics - you must use higher GI settings and it is a time eater - without dubt. It takes me allmost 40 minutes.

Beautiful renders. Love that last one. Can't wait to get R11.
The renders are absolutely beautifull! AR3 rocks!!
Thanks for posting and hopefully Maxon will soon send out the upgrade boxes :)

I've been following along some of the comments and examples of the new render - I figure it' only a matter of time before I upgrade.
Sounds like you are having fun with your new render. A question on the absorption of the tea. Forgive me but it doesn't look quite right. At the edge (where the tea meets the glass) where it should almost go clear, it doesn't.
I use a couple of renders which have absorption and using them the edges definitely move toward a greater clarity. Before I posted this, I used some of my very dark coffee - I make it very black....poured it into a glass and observed the edge clarity. It looks nothing like your renders. In real life as the transparent material gets thinner and thinner it also becomes clearer and clearer.....less color density.
Is this possible with the new glass material or does it do some other thing?

hello
you forget on two things I think...
1) Viscosity - I did there a viscosity with simple beveling, thatī s all, but correctly viscosity can play very impotent role in this parts I think.
2) IOR, if you try a IOR 1 - you get this resoult...
3) Inner reflection and reflected HDRI map
Nobody says Iīm a C4D master :-)

when you look at kai's transparency (free) R11 tutorial on Cineversity:
http://www.cineversity.com/tutorials/lesson.asp?tid=1335
You'll notice he made the liguid just a tiny bit bigger than the inside of the glass. Thhe liquid looks then more like PaulS2 describes: lighter and less colour density along the edge of the glass.

yes it is a question of modeling "correct" the liquid in surface type:-)

Hi Pavel, I really love the render, but I really do not like the HPL table material that you're using. Granted, it looks real, but it also looks like a cheap table. Don't you have some exotic wood lying around for a new table top? (hint, hint) ;)

Hello Bart
I did not want to do a table - it is a kitchen desk :-)...
I prefere a wood, but a kitchen desk is better from melaminformaldehydpaper soft pressed wood fiber desk :-).

oups, I forgot on spoon...

Excellent work Pavel, it's a perfect render and beautiful image.
I have a few questions, if you want to answer...
Did you use "Total Internal Reflection" and "Exit Reflections" for both the glass and the tea?
Also, what did you use for the depth of field?
And finally I'm curious for the rendertimes.
I don't mind if you can't answer questions, great render non-the-less!

Hello
thx!
About render
basic lightning settings I descripted here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=671421
Glass:
total internal reflections - I did not use them, becouse they did my glass outlines to dark, I used standard fresnel (edit, my mistake) shader instead it (with dark green color)
Exit Reflections: yes
Tea:
total internal reflection: yes - but I rebuild this material from some Arch. ed. library
Exit Reflections: no - viz above
Also, what did you use for the depth of field?
Uff, holly shi.. I promised I donīt tell it anybody. Yes, it could be 2 years ago, but... I used PSD and Lens bluring. DoF pass I did by special light directly in C4D.. Sorry, I can not say more... But - it is really very very easy technique!
Rendertimes: I worked on my PC, I had there cca 10 apps when I rendererd this picture (PHS, Word, Firefox, Skype etc..) cca 2 hours in picture resolution
Cheers Pavel

Thanks Pavel. I didn't really get the DOF part, but since you promised not to tell it's no biggie, I was just curious!

well pavel mentions that the actual depth of field was just a lens blur filter in photoshop the only 'secret' would be how he just created a depth pass to control the filter effect.
there are a million and one ways to generate a depth pass in cinema.
you can use the main depth pass set up through the camera and multipass.
you can use the environment fog to create a fake depth pass (or you can use dan pelhams fog shader to create a fog depth pass that respects alpha channels in materials).
you can use an omni light set to 'ambient illumination' to make another type of fake depth pass.
i would also imagine you can use a few plugins like z-blur to get the same effect.
cheers, simon w.

Tragic..
So the motion blur and scene motion blur are also untouched???

Changes:
Only GI core has been changed...
Sky shader - physicle sky
refraction - absorption
composition tag/material illumination settings...

the glass looks too thin, perhaps its the refraction index. it s looking like thin glass thats used in laboratories

yes, it is! these cups are from extra thin material (under 1 mm)

Pavel that's a great video and I can tell you really struggled with your english but you pulled through it and it was a really informative and good video tutorial.
Also what are you're GI settings, because I followed your tutorial and used the same HDRI and even on the video it looks darker than your glass scene, so would you mind sharing your GI settings additional for the MoXpig light plane and HDRI video settings.

Hi Pavel,
I think your work is excellent. I'm very interested in watching that tutorial but the link takes me to the main page. I looked in the Tutorials section but doesn't seem to be there. What am I missing?
Thanks a lot,

Hi
Thanks for tutorial. Itīs great to see people getting renders out with
new render core. I have also Vray for Cinema 4D but itīs complex
and not as easy to get grips with.

Yeah second that.
I have Vray as well and I try to learn all the ins and outs. So many settings etc.
When I see the cristal clear outcome of this little tutorial then I must start playing with AR3 as well. less settings to set and a very nice render at the end.
Great tut Pavel..
Peace,
Rich_Art.
