Project Yellow Dart:
Im going to be modeling an offspring design off this environment by Feng Zhu. However, for my vehicle concept... I'm not quite sure yet :)

anywho a little story to go with it.

in this "game" you take the role of a freelance engineer of the futur working with 1 other engineer in your dreams of having your designs bought by the government. Your partner steals your designs for a special vehicle you have been working on for 11 years, and takes credit for the design of the superior vehicle (codenamed yellow dart) in front of a board of government buyers; and has gotten a 50 billion dollar grant to begin the construction of it.

you get a low level position in the company who is sponsering the construction of this vehicle, and you abuse that low level position in many ways to find out where exactly the vehicle is being built. this requires an establishment of a trust-network that is a good one half of the game (which has plenty of mini-quests)

once you have acquired a team of soldiers (from the friends you acquired) you assault the government facility holding the yellow dart prototype. the 50 level underground facility (on a remote moon) is a good 1/2 of the remaining game.

the cinematic game icon is the yellow dart, and my environment (the scene im depicting) is the room you walk into that has the yellow dark prototype in the center with all the mechanics surrounding it.

so, (continuing the story) once you have acquired the yellow dart (a superior vehicle that will be the base design for new military vehicles) you spend the last 1/2 of the remaining game hunting down the double-crossing engineer that stole your plans... who has decided to flee the system (we're in space obviously) and go into hiding. you use the intricate network of associates you established in the first half of the game to help locate him; military opposition appears atleast three times (The bosses, the leaders of these military waves of opposition, are using the prototype military versions of the yellow dart); and then finally at the end you kill the back stabber and the game ends with you on the run. (room for a sequel?)

GRIN, and thats my story so far...
also, more sketches uploaded tomorrow!

Hey guys,
sorry about not updating... heheh, I had a post-party party :D
anywho, I started modeling... heres the first pic!

http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress1.jpg

I know its really early on, and the wire's turned on.... but it looks kinda weird without its textures, so I left it on.
Questions? Comments?

I already see some things that I need/want to change.... and I think i might add some cables for my own personal touch to that (some more madness)

Well the sketch is by "Feng Zhu",not original.I sure hope that we see more of your own input/ideas.Not rehash's of others concepts. Perhaps a twist on this concept. An influence from Feng Zhu not a duplication.I mean otherwise it's been there done that all over again.boooooring.
Modeling is off to a good start. Just give it some originality.

i agree with janhath. a solution would be to just model the platform for now, and than start with the machine & character to give us a glimpse at some of your own designs first.

here is an update on my modeling,
http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress2.jpg

and I agree... but, where my design comes in is more on the bottom half of the platform (i tried to change some stuff up on the top too) but when I get to that, it'll look less like his concept. :D

anywho, thanx for comments!!

i don't think it's a problem if the environment looks very similar to the feng's sketch, the vehicle is the real icon afterall, no? ;)

happy modeling

Gremlin

thats really the idea... the environment is just so its not super plain, its really the vehicle, but I am going to try and make the environment original.

anywho, thanx for all the replies!

progress update!!

http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress3.jpg

I applied some pretty cool lighting if I do say so myself, and did a legit render... I also photoshoped on some names of the parts. Hopefully it looks like its coming along to you all (like it does to me) :D

Critiques?

Very cool  . Yeah, that Feng zhu has some realy great concept art pictures. Anyway, great modeling and if you could please explain how you did that lighting. keep rocking man :airguitar

Gremlin

lighting is pretty simple...
its a blue point light with no shadow casting under the blue "emittor lense" with an even darker blue ambient light with like 0.1 intensity. Obviously there is a huge red light... a red spot light with shadows turned on (there are settings to make it a soft spot light, so the edges are hard) pointing downwards (approx -50º)
Cheers,

p.s. I could send you a maya file with the 3 lights in it :)

No need man, i use max ;) . I think i get the point i'll try to do it myself. And where is that vehicle ?:wip:

Gremlin, awsome work so far, your orignal focus on feng's work is a great start, your modeling for it, is getting there also, your previous post wiht ur latest picture, the lighting is awsome, usuing that lighting in a missile silo look, *feng's concept from earler* is also awsome,

keep up the good work, and hope u get a winner

Hi Gremlin..........It's quite ambitious, but that's a very good thing.I think you should follow the concept's main premise but keep it within your own style. It looks like it will be fun to do,and quite an undertaking, but also a very interesting task.Good luck, and I'll catch you after another up-date.Very promising and ambitious plan you have, but seems like it will be something to be proud of when finished.

I applied some pretty cool lighting if I do say so myself

 you may! if the rest of your scene will look this good we're in for a treat :D

btw: the next time around you should take care of that bright line around the object (or is it intended?). it looks like you rendered it on a bright background and then changed it to black

Gremlin
06-07-2003, 07:08 AM
hehe, it was intended....
anywho, thanx about the comments on my lighting... i'll be updating tomorrow after my last exam and the end of the year ceremony. :)

thanks a lot guys!

Well, I'll upload the pictures tomorrow... after I make a few add-ons, but so far, Ive converted some stuff to nurbs, and have been using some nurbs features to add some detail.

so far, there is not a connection between the emittor and the power cuplinks... I dont know if you all noticed, but the power cuplinks are floating in that pic (not attached to the emittor) and now, the energy canisters blend smoothly into the driver.... and other things are not noticable (like small degrees of rotation)

but its just a progress report (and part bump)
Cheers,

Hey guys,
no one even posted since I updated, but I updated again... (just edit the last post, instead of re-posting) so, check it out. you know your looking at the right thing if the lighting is primarily blue :D

anywho, the bottom part is still lacking some crucial parts, but you still get an idea of the scene... its really starting to pull together.

- the bridge is a walkway for humans and cargo (not a runway)
- the pad the bridge leads to is flight preparation
- the ship hovers next to the pad
*note: the pad is supported only by the bridge, and has no bottom support as seen in the feng zhu concept, so, it looks like a "L-shape" from the side. :scream:

Cheers,

Hi. It is really looking great! I love the super bright light at the bottom. This will make some great lighting for the ship once it is over it. looking foreward to seeing more.

ittle update...

http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress6.jpg

still lacking some details, and some details that I added you cant even see (like the storage canisters behind the support engines) but anywho, in the end it'll work out. heheh...its actually starting to look like a real environment.

My brother said that looks like the start of toy story 2.

I think it looks very good. Maybe some orange in the lower right to balance it a bit

Very nice work gremlin, I'm lovin the use of coloured lighting :applause:

Although unfortunately I can't really see all the details because it's a tad dark, although thats liekly to just be my monitor...

thanx guys....
(im uploading a really bright version with no cool lighting)
hopefully this will help.
Cheers,

edit: here... its kinda bad quality, but here it is.... (im probably gonna add mroe detail for the final final shot with the vehicle, but Im gonna model the vehicle before I do that)

http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress6_big.jpg

edit: lol, someone thought the grain looked dumb, but in did kinda look like night vision, and that I ought to make it total night vision, so I did...hehe (here you are Carm3D, your very own night vision pic!)

http://www.hellrender.com/challenge_progress6_big_nv.jpg

also, blessed Carm3D also pointed out that if the ladder is to scale (which I assured him it is) then the segments on the bridge are way too big...

(01:06:32) (Carm3D) If that ladder is to scale, then the segments that make up the walkway are too big.. Someone could get their foot caught between them!!

hehe, good ol' carm, he also pointed out...

(01:10:54) (Carm3D) Hey, that ladder goes nowhere!

LOL, thats bastard just wont stop with the stuff that aint right...hehe, anywho, thanx Carm, we all appreciate your help (well, maybe just me) :D

It seems almost impossible to design something new without borrowing some inspiration from Feng Zhu, doesn't it?
I do it too all the time (including in my challenge entry)... He is simply so good! The man is a god, really amazing!

Ohhh, and just to stay on topic here... Nice modeling, you got skills mate.

wow....
simple wow...
maya crashed while rendering my update and it didnt save. just crashed without warning, or message.

gah... i had made the bridge more human friendls (railling, smaller segments, spair oxygen tanks, etc...) and even made a starway... gah, and applied some real textures, and now I have to this all over again. *CRIES*

WHY, OH WHY...
if only I didnt need to buy a car, I would spend this summer job money on computer upgrades!! :annoyed:

Virtuoso
06-13-2003, 01:59 AM
Hi Gremlin.....Sorry to hear about the crash. It happens to all of us from time to time,it's unfortunate.:annoyed:

Your work will still come out very well in the end I am sure, you got some ambitious plans, and they look to be on there way.

Wait till the Fall for an up-grade all new pentium and AMD lines are coming, new age,and even if you don't want any of that than todays cutting age Pc's will be cut in almost half.Justa thought.

Well get back in the saddle, hang tough, and get your project going,it's off to a fine start.
