Thanks guys. This could be kinda fun.
Eh hem...And, Mr. Equinoxx, where exactly is YOUR entry?! I see how it is. Too good for us now.
But that's ok. We shall rise above your evil tyranny and smash the bounds of our oppression...or...something like that.
Again, sketches in the works. If you all laugh at 'em, I'll cry.

Ok, here's my first sketch. Just toying with some ideas right now. I'm keeping him all nice and mysterious for now so I can figure out what to do with 'em.
Gonna try a few more ideas, then make a character sheet before I hit the verts.
More to come. And remember: I'm work'n on my 2D skills, so be gentle. Forgive the crappy scan. It's late, and I just can't care.

Great stuff 3dZealot. I expect some funky sub-d stuff after all the effort put into your theory thread.:D
Dave Black
06-04-2003, 04:54 PM
Gee, thanks guys. So much nice encouragement. Not sure how much Sub-D stuff I'm going to be using here, but I'm sure I'll have some fun implementing new techniques. Remember that I learned as much from the Sub-D thread as I've contributed.
I'm gonna work on some more sketches today. Hopefully will post more tonight.
Thanks again for all the encouragement. Means alot...sniff...sniff.

Well poop. Don't want to look like something else. I'll have to look that guy up so that I can change 'em to be more original.
Of course, my subject matter is not exactly the most original idea on the planet. Hopefully a few twists will work it out. Of course, this is just the first sketch...can't really see the rest of 'em can ya?! Hehe.
Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep it in mind.

There's nothing wrong with looking similar to something that exists. Solomon said it, Shakespeare quoted it: "There's nothing new under the sun"

06-05-2003, 03:10 PM
Oh, I see how it is. Fine, no more animated .gifs for you! ;)
I'm currently doing a metric buttload of character studies. I'm planning out everything on paper this time to ensure a speedy modeling session with enough time left for rigging and possibly textures.
I'm going on vacation at the end of the month, so I'll have to scramble to get 'em done...
Anyway, thanks for all the encouragement and I'll be posting some new stuff soon.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm taking vacation right around deadline time so I have to get this and the 80 bazillion other projects I have going done in time for that.
Quick quesiton though... we don't -have- to rig the characters right? I mean the goal here is to create the character and render at a cinematic level?
Dave Black
06-05-2003, 03:36 PM
Oh no, man, we don't have to rig them. Or texture them.
It's implied that a rigged/posed character is more visually appealing than one that is not, but it's not a requirement.
Do to the complexity of my character(just in the amount of detail I've got going on right now)(oh yeah, and that's a pretty extreme pose I've got going there too), I'm going to have to rig him. Also, I'd like to animate him later, and I know if I don't do it now, it probably won't happen for a while.
Don't sweat it, man. No rigging needed!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support, guys. It really means alot to me.
I had a chance to play around tonight with some of the overall design features of my character. I have'nt added details yet, and the hands are just place-holders, but I thought I'd be a good challenger and share.
Again, please take it easy on my about my drawing skills, as there are very much in need of improvement. I hope to start modeling mid-week.

Yes I agree with Dom............very nice drawings indeed.
Plus the idea/style is conveyed very nicely. This will be very interesting and fun to see develope.I can only say now you have a fine foundation,it looks like it has lots of potential to be a very nice 3D model.I'll try and give a suggestion or two later on the modeling, but for now I'll just say very nice start on a promising model.See you soon, have fun...................Oh and by the way,I love the idea of going for a full on rig,it really pays in the end,not just for animation, but for the stills as well. See you for now.................

Hi 3DZealot,
thats realy nice developing model you have there. It looks great so far so keep going. I know thats it's i an erly stage but i would like to make a suggestion, namely the eye in my opinion should be a bit deeper inside the head but thats me:).

cgbinho: Your right that he has a sad look about him, but that will change soon. It's just my first night's work. Great nick, btw. I just got it.
Equinoxx: 'Noxx, you rock! Thanks so much. You are too kind.
Hexodam: I decided to model the head because a good portion of his face is visible through the mask, and I want him to be able to take it off. :D
Jelwa: Thanks for the encouragement! As for your suggestion, it is dually noted. The last 2 things I wanted to do last night, were to move his eyes further into his face, and then to push them closer together. It's the top 2 things that are bugging me right now. Good eye, man. Thanks again!

Very impressive, 3DZealot. I like the eyes... the face looks sort of Balkan or Scandinavian, I think. I really like the bone structure. And nice nose, Adam's apple, chin, lines about the mouth. I can tell you didn't fudge this!

Thanks everyone!
I finally got around to working on my entry again last night. So, here is the results of my second modeling session. Not a whole lot of detail, but I don't want to over do it when his face is mostly going to be obscured. Maybe one more detail pass before going on to the body, props, and costume. Ignore his neck, as I just started on it.
Anyway. Here's the update! (Special thanks to Dom for getting my rear in gear last night :D):

Well Zealot you've inspired me... errr indirectly that is.
You're doing so much facial geometry for a character who will wear a helmet. My character on the other hand, has a helmet but will hardly ever wear it.
Er go if I am to keep up with the joneses (the zealots) then I should by prudence model the helmet for my character who never wears it, so as not to be shone up by the guy who models a face for a character who wears his...
oh my head hurts now.
Dave Black
06-13-2003, 06:00 PM
Thanks guys!
Hehe...Dubu, I can't stop laughing....
Just to interject something about why I'm modeling this full head:
I work at a company making very stylized, highly upbeat catoony stuff. I'm absolutly bored to tears with it( been doing it too long), and I just wanted to have some fun...Plus, this is more my "style".
So don't think I'm crazy. Just bored. :D
As for the "arnold" look...I began noticing this as well. Hope it's not a detraction. Sadly, if I had used arnold references, it would look less like him...hehe. I'll tweak it a bit so it does'nt look like him as much.
As for his sternomastoid, Mr. Neox, I just dragged some edges down and shmooshed the verts for about a minute...so...yeah...it does look wierd. I'll get to fixing that soon. Thanks for the input. Also, his ear ain't done. I'm just debating whether or not to add the proper levels of detail as noone will ever see 'em...
Thanks again, guys!

Count yer blessings dude. Your bored working in an industry I'd give my left thumb, or at least up to the second knuckle anyway to work in. As it is I'm bored out of -my- mind programming asp pages for an incredibly unappreciative manager.

Dave Black
06-17-2003, 06:59 AM
Thanks, guys.
KWAK: Um, it's not really that dense. Believe me when I say the control cage is quite low-poly. :D
To everyone who commented on the ears: I'll get back to 'em later if there's time. I normally like to do a final detail pass, but due to my tight schedule, and the sheer lack of modeling/texturing/rigging nights I have left, the ears will have to wait. Right now I'm just trying to develop the character and blockout the overall shapes.
3rd night of modeling. Hopefully I'll get alot done this week. Modeling was way slow tonight, as I'd been doing it all day at work and my brain just was'nt motivated. Here's a few screenshots of what I'm working on:

Knowing utterly nothing about the tec. side of what it is that you do Zealot, and don't try and explain it to me, I'm all ready dizzy this week, I'm going just post a reaction here.
Gut reaction, what I take away from this so-not-finished character as someone that is 'outside' the medium looking in, is that this character is one that I love the most: the sacrificing hero.
The sadness in him comes across almost as a weighed action, not yet done. The sergent that throws himself ontop of a live grenade so his men are saved. The one that jumps into the bullet to save his buddy, so the buddy can go home even though he won't be. The one that leaves his people and goes and does the impossible, and it costs him everything. But then he knew he wasn't coming back from when he left.
You hooked me, you made me wanna know more, and you did it with the lines in his face. He's not perfect, but then who wants perfect in a character?
First of all, thank you for your kind words, I hope I'm equal to the task (eh, who cares, I'm having to much fun:D ).
Very powerful character you have here. He has, what I can only describe as - PRESENCE. Love what you did to the eyes, they were the first thing I looked at when I first saw the model. If I may, just one word of advise - let the concept lead the moddeling
and not vise versa (hope I was not out of line here, after all, I am the new guy)

Dave Black
06-24-2003, 06:38 PM
I'll post some wires tonight if I get the chance. I've gotta suspend work on my entry for now as I've got a ton going on. But, I will finish it, just might not meet the deadline.
It's funny, my wife says the same thing about the concept. I meant for him to look really sneaky, like he just crested the top of a cliff and is peering around at the enemy. I did'nt make a background, as I envisioned it as a night scene, and he's high up enough that you can't see the ground. The moons in the BG were just to denote that he ain't on earth. I'll be sure to work harder on the composition of my concepts to better explain where I'm coming from. Again, my 2d skills are sorely lacking, so it's an upward battle. If I wanted him to look like he was falling off, I'd have picked a more dynamic/dramatic viewpoint as well as have more motion in the sketch. Rocks flying, cloth blowing. That type of thing.
Thanks for all the encouragement and crits, guys. I hope I can at least deliver him at 60% by the deadline. I probably won't have time to rig him either. I budgeted enough time, but with work and my upcoming vacation, I'll just have to settle on not completing it by the DL. It may make a neat work for the WIP section later, though.
Thanks again!
