06-04-2003, 01:49 PM
thx Virtuoso & coCoKNIght! i sure hope to see you in here too!
on to my idea... i really thought hard about what to do! the first things that flashed through my mind were all like crazy post apocalyptic desert themes, huge alien ships and so on... but that's not what i want to do really
i went a different way and thought about some requirements for my game, it would..
- offer a lot of freedom to the player
- have a pretty gloomy athmosphere but not so much that comical moments would seem out of place (hope that makes sense)
then i thought about what we don't often see in games, and what we see way too much..
- a huge part of the current games either take place in the present, future, or way back in the past, you don't often see 19th century games imo
- in games, aliens are almost always the aggressors, you're always playing the human character
i know these "just like that other game" comparisons are lame, but imagine gta vc gameplay freedom in a world as interactive as HL2's... there you are.
in my not entirely original game, you're the alien.. stranded on a 19th century planet earth... free to do WHATEVER you want, and your actions will define you as a character :)
now the scene i will model could be the last shot of the intro cinematic, and could also be used as an advert in magazines. you see the alien from behind, standing in a rainy city street at night, smoke rising from the crash-landed ship on his right. the tagline could be: "What would you do?"
*legal notice* ;)
any similarities to certain in-progress shortfilms are a total coincidence! i only noticed this afterwards as it wasn't an alien theme from the beginning, the initial thought was "someone standing in the street not knowing what to do" the style will be nothing like AlienZ though
sounds really interesting!
but you will use a lot of details if you show the alien only from behind?
Aearon
06-04-2003, 07:32 PM
yeah my personal challenge for this one is to make it look as realistic as possible, no half-way comic-style like most i've done in the past
i imagine the alien to look pretty cool from behind, but the main focus will most likely be on the city/environment itself... it's supposed to suggest the gameplay freedom the game would offer, so the "icon" is actually the environment
Virtuoso

Very nice twist and original concept Fist.........
Perhaps when showing this "Shot" You can give a slight perspective of the character,at a glimpse of him/her/it..........still from the back to keep the idea you have alive and the emphasis on the World/set,but still to give the perspective gamers/buyers of your game a bit more, and show more potential and give a glimpse of the true essence of the game, even though for the most part the game is open-ended . Maybe keep the features of the character a bit out of focus due to wanting to keep the character and game a mystery, and the emphasis on the environment. Also to show that it's up to you and how you want to play the game on how your characters appearance shall look.Evil, hero,or anything in-between these.
Somewhat like the up-coming "FABLE" for the XBOX.
The premise is a very good one,the open-ended idea too is enticing.I look forward to your creation,I know it will be done in top form in all aspects.
You got me itching to join this one,I already have some concepts and tons of ideas myself,we shall see.............;)
Great idea and point of view.. I'm keeping an eye on your progress. Good luck and may the inspiration goddess be with you!

thx guys!
Virtuoso: I see you really put some thought into your reply! thanks so much for all the great input. I think you're right about the perspective, good way to show some more of the character and still keep my initial idea intact. the "keeping things out of focus" is also a great idea, i think i'll do that with lighting.
i've started working on the model, it's more like a sketch though, i wanted to put all of the shapes that i had in my head into a rough model... more details coming soon!

hi fist.
just wanted to tell you the hair looks astonishing. but maybe if you added many more of those sharp things (I don't know if I could tell. the mosquito leg like structures on the hair)... It would look cooler..
Sincerely
Aearon
06-06-2003, 04:20 PM
hehe i don't even know if i like that single one really  we'll see how it developes
it's not really hair btw, more of a "head extension", textures will clear things up ;)
i just tried zBrush btw, it's even better than imagined... hope i don't lose myself playing with it...but you can't import using the demo
Hehehe - yes A&B that was my first thought too :) i hope u challenge youreself and show us superb modeling
looks interesting, just keep updating and don't play too much with zbrush ;)
oh, and I hope it will not look as good as your above & beyond challenge entry...others also want to win :scream:

06-07-2003, 12:09 PM
hey fist, nice to see you are in the challenge! I'm sure it will end up really really nice, as before!
but reading your description of the alien standing in front of the city, in a game with gameplay like gtaVC and HL.. and then putting this guy in front of that city.. I would think all he wanted to do in this new world was going to tivolis and enjoy time infront of the tv :D meaning he looks way to kind for his purpose(but maybe this is what you want? no wrong with it at all, but as you compared your game with HL and VC, well.. I thought.. :) )
but without a sketch I dont know where you are going with him, maybe you have all that planned already. elseway, I think you should make him more "evil". more "spikey" shapes instead of round forms might help a litte..
crit me to death please!
post more angles and I will try ;) really hard to tell from a 3/4 back view.
cheers
Aearon
06-07-2003, 12:21 PM
hey fellah! nice to see you in here :D
i think you have a slight misperception about my concept, he's not supposed to be evil! i tried to keep him pretty neutral, because it's up to the player where he wants to take it.
"I would think all he wanted to do in this new world was going to tivolis and enjoy time infront of the tv"
in this game, you can do that
i just drew comparisons with hl2 and gta because of the freedom these games offer. still... i agree that he looks a little too friendly right now, i'll try to fix that. in the final he'll probably knee in the street, the arms hanging down, shocked/exhausted look on the face
btw, i think i will stick to the back view - in the final pic you will see him from behind, so i won't pay too much attention to the front, my intention is to convey some character through the look of the back / his general features ;)
any ideas for that?
mr_nebel
06-07-2003, 12:44 PM
It would be cool if you could see part of his front in a reflection, maybe in a puddle if it's raining.
coCoKNIght
06-07-2003, 12:46 PM
you should show different angles anyway :D
fellah
06-07-2003, 12:59 PM
ahhh, I see! I had it all wrong, then all is fine :)
ideas.. hm, hard to give specific crits as early as this.. but, you should try to make things that makes sence to the story behind the pic. think to it, you could go with a very elegant costume as if he's from a very intelligent/nice place. or, a trashy ripped apart space-costume(as if he went through a crash :D ), would be better as it would help bring forward the story behind the pic.
maybe some blood or special symbols.. ex, if you give him a "space army symbol", it would give us a glimpse of his history, making us think he came from a big space army.. it will make some of us think behind the first impression of the pic and see a story behind..
I also read you planned adding rain and smoke to the scene, even better. great idea, it will help to add the right mood to the scene.
oh, and cool idea by "mr_nebel". show his face of in a water reflection or something. maybe not show all, but a little part of it.. leave some for our imagination/interpretions, could be cool :)
I will try to help with ideas etc later on when I see more, easier to give more exact crits if we see more as it's hard to tell where you are going right now, but all points in the right direction :)

06-07-2003, 02:40 PM
i see fellah! :D
excellent input man. i'll take his home world/position/job more into consideration now :D
"It would be cool if you could see part of his front in a reflection, maybe in a puddle if it's raining."
hey, i already had that on my mind! i just couldn't figure out a way to do that with the perspective i'm planning... but now that you guys like the idea i guess i'll have to find something to reflect his face :bounce:

I am very interested Fist in the outcome of this creation/idea you have. It's very interesting to see it come to life litttle by little.
I think that Fellah( Bastard that he is ;) ) & mr_nebel make very good suggestions. Reflections can keep the mystery up and still give a little more to the perspective gamers.
The environment being in such contrast with this far off creature from another planet is very interesting,I really look forward to your progress,it's quite ambitious, but in good hands with you.

06-07-2003, 08:08 PM
hehe thx mate :) i also think some very good points have been made, i'll be more than happy to take all of them into consideration!
" The environment being in such contrast"
i hope this will really stick out! when i finish the alien i will just model & finish the scene seperately to put them together at the very end..
on to another smallish update: just playing around with what i have so far, bigger stuff coming up tomorror

hello fist..
Still going unbelievable but I think the arms are a bit too thick..
Also again, more of those things in the hair area ;) ;)
sincerely
Great progress so far. If I may add a suggestion, I think you should do him entirely, like a normal character and show us more angles, even if you plan to focus on his back; because it will help you with proportions, and even more if you are going to add some reflections of himself in the environment. It may also be that in the end you could have another idea for his pose... but in fact, I don't know maybe you're already doing that and you just show us always the same angle..
Aearon
06-07-2003, 10:47 PM
coCo: i won't! :)
akocan: you're right about the arm, i'll see to that, but you won't get more hair-thingies :D
m@.: well, i have to admit that you're right, i just was too lazy for now... with the new reflection plan i'll have to do his face for real anyway. he already has one, but he only looks the way i picture him from the side, so..for now i've just shown the angle that i think will be seen in the final piece
i guess i will just have to model & rig him completely, but the focus will still be on the back of course
It always saves time in the end, to do things properly :)
I really liked your Above&Beyond entry, looks like this one is gonna be amazing too!

ok i told you i didn't like it yet, but here's the face due to popular demand ;)
http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/alien06.jpg
as was said earlier, you won't be able to see it clearly in the final, but i will still try to make the features a little more expressive, it just looks too plain right now
Aearon
06-08-2003, 02:37 PM
oh dimitris, just noticed your reply
thanks, draw-overs are always a great help! but what you did looks a little too freaky, that doesn't really match the design i had in mind.. he's supposed to look pretty humanoid
seems like you all want more of those things sticking out of his head.. i have to admit that it looks pretty cool :D but i'm afraid you won't see it happening
where i agree with you is that he needs more clearly defined muscle structures, especially in the face - already working on that

sorry if i sometimes show you updates that don't really show anything new ;)
here's a ogl screenshot for a change, you can see the shapes better.. i think it's almost complete
http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/alien07_ogl.jpg
there will be some kind of wire coming out of that little hole (connected to some little device on the side), and the "hair" area looks too smooth, so it'll get a little more detail, then i'll be done with the head modeling
dimitris: back view is coming when i continue on the areas just mentioned :bounce:
*edit* updated image and change of plans: that implant thing just seemed a little out of place, i like it better this way
yehh there is enough place for detail ;)

hehe thanks for the compliments, and thanks for pointing out that thumb thing... no idea how that got overlooked
i updated the armor, but only reuploaded the pic so the thread is not all that full of images.
next up are some details arms and armor detail in the front. The armor material is btw something special.. it's pretty firm and fits the muscle structure (so what you see on the armor is actually what the guy looks like underneath)
imagine rubber with a metal-like feel.. it' stays in its shape but is pretty flexible
very nice - but the triceps can u do better :):wip:
