I was told that it depends on the artist when it comes to nice 3D work but my question is...Is Cinema as widely known by the 3D industry as people say it is? I mean, If someone could give me a few example companies that actually use Cinema 4d for 3D graphics then I would be pleased. With this Lightwave, maya, 3dstudio world it seems as though Cinema is just another leaf in the wind in Autumn. Does only knowing a lot of Cinema limit your possibilities to land a 3D job?

What I find sad is with Cinema release 8 some of the new tools even dominate the tools that are used in the current Lightwave and many other 3D app. Many people are amazed when they discover the flexibility and ease of use when it comes to Cinema but yet I have no real confidence that CG companies are investing in it because:

1. Lightwave, 3D max, Maya are ever so popular because they are just...

2. Maxon is still a growing company and the little names don't get noticed that much in the industry.

Cinema 4D is a very powerful tool, especially the new release yet its like people I talk too have never heard of it. I ask this and also wonder how you 3D pro's using Cinema are making a living. Are most of you in jobs that use Cinema?

Also is cinema widely popular among art schools? Say I wanted to learn more about Cinema but probably most CG academies prob use the usual Lightwave, maya, and 3dmax. What about Cinema?

How popular is it really?

Thanks, I've just purchased the New release 8:thumbsup:

depends on where your from, in europe, C4d is extremely popular. But eriously what does it matter, its a 3D app, they all work basically the same and are all based on the same concepts, try out the free version available and find the one that works best for you. Populrity shouldnt' be a factor, now for getting a job in a specific market you may want to consider the most used app for that area, but there are C4D guys who have gon on to to work at ILM the MIll the Orphange, Pixar, so don't doubt the app, it really is up to the artist.

as for what us PRO's (I hate that general term) are using, I use it as part of making my living right now, currently I'm doing mostly freelance instructing, so I just did a workshop on raditional animation and application into flash, at the end of this week I'm teaching Adobe premiere intermidiate at a college, but I have taught C4D and gotten very well paid for it. C4D is getting noticed as of late, and will continue to become more and more popular.

one studio to look at off the top of my head though is Imaginary forces, they do the opening credits for most of the marvel films and many other films and trailers, so Spider man and Daredevil those kinds of things.

Some companies seem to gravitate to using what the artist wants to use.

Like simon wicker who worked for ILM doing a large ammount of work on EPI 2. heck he is probibly working on EPI 3 just NDAed all to heck and back.

Anway he used C4D this could be due to the fact that he gets the work done. So he is able to say don't make me use maya cause its gonna look great using cinema.

just my 2 cents.

I would say its good to have a diverse set of abilities... Once you understand the concepts behind 3D Modeling you really only need some classes to familiarize yourself with new software. I'm not saying being a one software man is bad, but it will limit your choices some.

Simon left ILM and moved, so I doubt it

Something interesting i've noticed is that Cinema is often "the app i use at home" for people who'se day jobs involve using Maya, Lightwave etc... i.e. people in the studios. It's the tool they actually enjoy using, and want to have in their home.

I have a question since we are on this jop topic in c4d. I am a 15 yr. old student in California and am seriously thinking about buying cinema 4d r8 at a student discount but on their site it does not say how much it is with the discount. If anybody could tell me I'd be very grateful.

dude maxons site most deffinitely does tell you what the prices are. you just have to look a bit its not hard to find.

click on education on the right of the page, then click on the link for america or cineversity then once you are their just download the form and look at the prices its pretty darn simple.

if you have any further questions I would just email maxon. They have been very kind and helpful to me.

Emberghost, I too am a 15 yr. old aspiring animator (We've talked, before, yes?) Anywho, I got the XL bundle (that's everything except Bodypaint and the Dynamics module) for $290 at academicsuperstore.com! Excellent, yes? C4D great I totally recommend it.

Cyborgguineapig: C4D is popular in the movie biz, opening credits and effects, mostly. I don't think a full movie has been released that's all c4d, however...

there is a ricaro report on 3d software somewhere which actually puts cinema way up there in terms of seats...
(not sure how you spell riccaro though...)...ask third_eye he'll tell ya...)

as for industry...learning any software isn't gonna hinder you in anyway....what you specialise in might....the more strings to your bow the better...imho....making you more flexible in the job market....
max games
maya movies
a general sweeping statement to industry...but there you go.
however don't forget there is far more to the world of 3d than games and movies... ...of which cinema is making in roads...but at the end of the day for me its a personal choice...not an employment choice...so i'm happy with my choice.
