I made this as part of another project I'm working on, I thought it turned out really good, so I decided to also post it on it's own. :)

interesting looks a little bit like flat polys though.

I recomend beveling the edges of the transpanrt bits a tad bit.

that and adding a large bump to it would give it a little ripple so that it will not look so CG.

also work on the refraction rates and lighting a bit. The transparency is looking a little weird.

But you are right that did turn out very nice.

great job.

Chamfer CHAMFER CHAMFER

Chamfer the hard edges, in the real world you never see a corner like that, heck even a knife doesn't get that sharp.

the wires look waaaaay to thin, and you've got the colours wrong aswell :p

standard network cable should have these colours and in most cases arranged in this order, its like a cisco standard, to make sure that both ends are always the same

white with orange stripes
orange
white with green stripes
blue
white with blue stripes
green
white with brown stripes
brown

I agree with kai aswell, this needs rounding off a bit, (there's loads of this networking stuff all over the office)

I know the wire colors are wrong, this is mainly because I couldn't figure out how to do the 2 colored wires, so I just colored it randomly.

I'll make the wires thicker.

The main reason I went a bit fast doing this is that it ahs to be done by June 20th and I don't much time anymore since it's final exam time at school.

I'll try and work on the rounding part.

Thanks for the feedback. :) When I get home I'll try and work on those but it'd really help if someone would help me with the 2 colored wires part...

For two colors:

(1) in the color channel, use a Bhodinut Gradient.

(2) Use only two colors in the gradient, namely the colors that you need (white and orange, white and green, and so on).

(3) Change the gradient interpolation type to "none"

(4) Apply the texture to the wire, and choose UVW-mapping.

and that's that.

It might be necessary (how do you spell that word again?!?) to switch the gradient orientation. To do this, go back to the gradient dialog box, and select the correct type: 2D-U or 2D-V.

You will also have to change the tiling in the texture tag attribute manager'.

below an image with both 2D-U and 2D-V

Cheers,
BaRa

Ok, 1 little problem with wire coloring, I get it to look right in editor, but when I render, it only shows the first colored part. Like I did white and brown, it looks right, but when I render, only 1 brown part at bottom and rest is white.

only 1 brown part at bottom and rest is white.

Select the cycle option in Bhodinut Gradient.

I made a few things roundier and fixed wire colors...

nice the clear plastic material on the plug is still not perfect but it looks real nice.

you don't work for at&t do ya? it looks suspiciously like an At&t add.

the blue plastic material is good.

the sheath part is to thin imho...this is the blue cover between the RJ45 Jack part and the cable.

other than that i think you cracked it.
