I'm an instructor who teaches Multimedia. I have lots of great intermediate to Advanced tuts that I use to teach AE, but there seems to be a hardly any very basic beginner projects out there. Is there some good people out there who might have some ideas for some projects?

Try videocopilot.net - there are some beginner and intermediate tutorials. He even has an AfterEffect basic training complete set of tutorials on his site - for free!

Creative Cow might have some as well.

For beginner - I would say that just simple text and motion elements would be a good starting point. It depends on the person - do they know photoshop? How long have they used a computer? There's beginner and then there's "dawn of time" beginner.

Yepp, Andrew's AE basics are way to go. He does all his tutorials very well and never takes himself too seriously, so watching them is very pleasant. Also do not forget Aharon's video podcasts and tutorials over at that palce which we don't name here.... Not near as much fun, but you can still learn a lot in some of them (e.g. the basics on broadcast safe video should be required reading for anyone)...

I guess my question was a little misleading. More to the point, I need simply ideas or scenarios for projects. Like for example, "a local multimedia firm is subbing out a video shoot for a car dealership". Not really the actual AE stuff, just the idea for a new, fun projects for the students. So, you see there are myriad possibilities for projects. Does anyone have any interesting scenarios? Maybe some real on the job project ideas?

Ok, so really you want a writer? I would post this on the scriptwriting forum. Although all of us have commercial experience you may find that we are more the "technical" crowd rather than the "ideation" crowd.

I think that if you want scenarios - you could just turn on the TV and jot down some simple commercials. Or if you want go to some of the marketing agencies websites and take a look at their galleries. There is also the challenges hosted on these forums. You could potentially get some very good ideas there.

If you are teaching a class and need these ideas - maybe asking the students themselves to come up with those scenarios would be a good practice in that they would gain some experience in being the client or producer as well.
