View Full Version : Bring Back the Toolbars!

I am by no means a scripter but I'm wondering if this is possible.

I use a MAX plugin program that resides in the Utilities panel. I use a multi-monitor setup (4) for MAX with the command panel and several other toolbars always spread around the desktop. Whenever this plugin program is run, it hides every one of these toolbars including the command panel. So when I want to go back to work after this has run, I must right-click on menu bringing up the flyout that shows what toolbars are visible. Each of the missing toolbars is checked (visible) but they are not visible. When I uncheck the toolbar, the flyout closes and I must re-open the flyout and check it again. Then the toolbar appears. I must do this for each one. Very time consuming.

Could a script uncheck/re-check each of these with one click, therefore bringing back my desired toolbars?

The developer says it can't be done.

Thanks!

ctrl-x is by default expert mode... it's handy.

Yes... it is handy... but it doesn't work. Once the toolbars and command panel are gone, CTRL-X don't bring them back.

But thanks for the ideas!

How about: Customize > Show UI > Show floating toolbars ?

"The developer says it can't be done."

Interesting...

Is he using the built in progress bar at the bottom of the screen?

I had that issue when using the progress bar along with disabling the screen redraw.

I wrote a progress listener dialog that I use for all status updates.

Still running it from the utility panel, are you in Max 5 ?

hi mike,

i feel really inadequate with my 2 monitors :hmm:

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this.

Not trying to make anyone feel inad. Yes, once you go quad monitors... you never go back. Actually, it's five monitors if you count the HD (but that's connected to a different workstation which is KVMed to 3 monitors in the 4 monitor setup). But what's REALLY nice is the 52" HD monitor that is attached to the notebook I'm typing on...yessss. Sorry.

Regarding the "Customize > Show UI > Show floating toolbars" idea, it doesn't work and seems to be broken. But thanks for the idea... I have never really used this function. So I have my 6 floating toolbars visible and I go to use this function. When I get there, the item is checked which is logical. I uncheck it and the dialog goes away and the toolbars go poof and that's great. Then I go back to the dialog and guess what... it's still checked and yet the floating toolbars are gone. Why is it checked? If I select the toggle item again... nothing happens... the toolbars do not re-appear. So this functionality seems wacked and this is without even testing in relationship to the app in question which makes the toolbars disappear. So I don't think this will help me.

Regarding the app... yes it appears that the progress bar might be used in some way... not really sure as I'm not a programmer/scripter. But the progress bar does briefly flash through with exporting a test teapot. This app, by the way, is Polytrans and specifically the MAX plugin for Polytrans. Each time the exporter is run, my UI is trashed and I have to manually make all the floating toolbars re-appear one by one.

Thanks for the ideas.

I think polytrans has some known issues, accidently I discoverd a bit of a "rant" on guruware website in the objIO page last paragraphs of that page: http://www.guruware.at/main/index.html this tells me, more people have problems with polytrans. :)

No solution though...
Maybe try
resumeEditing()
in the listener, sometimes that makes stuff work again...

Johan,

Thanks for the link... interesting.

At this point I am too ignorant to comment on Polytrans in general but it seems to go a good job of conversion in the things I've tried. But I just wish it didn't trash my UI everytime I used it.

Thanks again.

Maybe just open a second instance of max to do the conversion, whilst having the first one open in the background. After importing save and close and continue working in the first one also saving the UI settings on close. It's a bit more hassle, but on a good day I have 2 or 3 max open simultaneously, and by reading this thread you certainly have the screen real estate for that ;)
