I just finished my 5 second vfx project for centennial college digital animation program. I did not manage to do all that I wanted to for it but I did succeed in achieving my learning goals from the assignment. Hopefully you guys can give me more feedback on what I would need to change on it if I want to put on my demo reel.
p.s.: I know the particle smoke sucks. I will fix it =)

I think the compositing of your shot was nice. Would of like to see more of the fire the snake shot out. Maybe expanding the simulation a bit. Other than that nice job.

Thats the most common feedback I have been getting as of late that its too short. For what it was worth it took me 2 months to get these 5 seconds done, and thats including learning about maya dynamics, mudbox, camera projection, texturing, digital fusion and compositing principles. I had plans for a longer shot initially and also a completely different monster, but as I went along I realized the limitations of camera projections and also the flaws in my design choices for the project. When they asked us to nail down our storyboard we didnt know anything about vfx so a different end result was to be expected. I'm still not sure if I would get into specialising in vfx..if I do I will take all the feedback I get from you guys here and work it into my demo reel.

I understand exactly how you feel. It's extremely hard working on a project by yourself. Especially if you have to cover all areas. Lighting, modeling, texturing, rigging, painting weights, animating, compositing, and vfx? Are you serious? I think you have a solid grasp of compositing and that may be an area you might want to focus on. But don't listen to me bro. Do what your heart desires. Look at me. I'm a generalist. I was told NO!!!, generalists are bad. Focus on 1 thing. But I like everything. With that being said, I ran into the same problem while I worked on my thesis. Having to execute every area at high quality level with a limited amount of time. So you have to give or take, cutting corners to get the job done. That is why I ended up rendering out a beauty pass for my Emperor, due to the fact that I already had 10 passes in the shot that did'nt even consist of the character. Thanks for the tips regarding the specular layer. That's a great approach to creating that pass. Keep grinding and continue to get better. Later man.
