i have been trying out the spline ik for a spine and it works quite nicely but im having trouble getting my head round how to get the spine to twist

any thoughts on this

SplineIK has start and end angle parameters. IIRC, turning on manipulate mode gives you handles in the viewport for these. They don't work great out of the box, but there are ways of improving it through wire, script, or expression controllers.

Maybe somebody can post an example? If not, I'll put one up tonight.

it works exactly how i want it to

in my haste to tidy things up i hid the ik and was trying to do it through the dummys

or you can try to use one of available rigs plugins
guys at kaydara.com has released an awesome humanik plugin for 3dsmax.

i played with a demo version. this rig has a big potencial.
here is a quick test.

made it in 10 minuts animating only 5 different gizmos. that toy rocks.
