CGTalk - Glowing light shape

Hi! I'm not certain what to call this, but in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Trailer, when the youngest sibling opens the door of the wardrobe, the background glows and fills the entire screen.

What I'm trying to do is to overlay a glowing cross on some footage.

I was going to use a 3D modeler (Maya, Cinema, or 3DS Max), but I wasn't certain if there was a simpler method through Final Cut Studio.

Well now Zaxwerks Proanimator is out on FCP, so you can try that out to create a simple 3D Cross and use your glows and composite away.
