Can anyone compare the features of Maya nParticles and 3ds Max's PFlow?

on another note, one of the main differences between nparticles and pflow is that n particles is a dynamics system that runs across a lot of different parts of maya so if uses the same dynamics systems for its fluid, particles, cloth and so on - also any of them can interact with each other.

Pflow on the other hand is its own particle system in max which uses some of the old dynamics tools but doesnt interact with the cloth system for example - it's very good but incapable of doing the same things as nparticles. More importantly what do you want to do with it? It doesn't matter how may really complex things a system can do unless you actually need to use them.

Well you basically compared them for me, I was just wondering. That is a disadvantage, that the nParticles can integrate well with fluids and cloth, but not large one because PFlow can also animate and interact well with cloth and such, you just have to know how.

Not in the way nparticles can - nparticles can actually drive a cloth simulation as opposed to pflow which can bounce particles off a mesh - the mesh can happen to be something with a cloth sim on it, but n particles can actually cause the cloth to move and simulate. When you run into the limitations of particle flow you can move on to the two boxes which will give you a bit more power and when you run out of that you can move on to thinking particles - neither of which will give you access to a fluid solver (although some japanese guy has made one for thinking particles) so you'd have to move to nparticles or houdini.

My point is that there's no point in learning one particle system over another just because one system can do a very specific effect which you may never actually use. Even now as you say yourself you're only using 3dsmax for 6 months so you're not going to be at a point where you can push the limits of particle flow so I wouldn't worry about what another package can do.
