hehe

you realize this is for a game right? a MMO to be precise... my personal opinion is we are selling the characters that you get to play or encounter in the game rather than a story. besides its WAR!

Further proof that it probably is a lot of fun to work at Blur, and that the Warhammer license is definitely a cool one to work on.

but what great animation.
I let it load and came back later so it played without problems.

Now I will watch it again.

That could be the best Blur cinematic I've ever seen. And damn long! I think this proves we can expect full-lenght movies from these guys...

Anyways...I hope this game is decent, otherwise this could be in top of the the biggest waste of efforts list.

no it was not used... we do our effects in 3dsmax using various plugins, the fx crew browsing the forums can tell you what they used.

XSI is ONLY used for rigging and animation

Can I ask what the renderer of choice for this project was? A lot of the materials look very nice.

I also want to add that the 4mins it took to watch the trailer feels like 30 sec. You guys really know how to make eye candy.

I think it was Mental Ray. I think Blur started using Mental Ray some months ago, when they changed to X64 bit OS.

I wish one day work at Blur or work as a remote freelancer in a work. This is really well done, really love de work on the characters and on the visual effects.

Thanks for the kind words all, glad to see people are liking it overall...

We used mental ray in 3ds Max to render the whole project, minus some scanline passes for FumeFX, HairFX and miscellaneous atmospherics.

That's the best Blur cinematic I've ever seen. This time the pacing didn't appear rushed and I loved the setup between the elf bowgirl and the guy she shot....it actually felt like a world for a second. Damn.

Edit: Saying that, has this game been in production for like five years or something? I remember seeing cinematics (not to mention the best I've ever seen for a single game) for this nearly three years ago. How do these people make any money when they haven't released the game and have like four movie quality cinematics made for it?

Holy mother of potatoes! Oh yes, best Blur trailer ever, specially considering its lenght aswell. I really loved when when the trailer turned into 2 man battle, chasing down the alleys. Impressive amount of art work made aswell. Visual effects were superb as always, but first trailer had some of the best (warlock magical sparks and vortex fields!) :)

Off topic, best trailer ever made is hellscream vs mannoroth in warcraft 3. Not even blizzard can beat themselves on that one.

I am sorry when being so harsh but I guess we are all entitled for our opinions :)

Anyway the quality was great, I can't deny that. However part of the design and animation was bad. At points animation was little stiff, especially facial expressions and some of the moves were overdone for my taste. The armor design...err, well lets just say I don't like that kind of armory on female characters eve in fantasy worlds. Too much used lately.

I know I should not take these too seriously but I just wanted to throw out my thoughts.

i totally agree on this one, I love blur's cinematic cos of their effects, is great to see how they push 3dsmax to the limits in terms of effects, they are always awesome, but character wise i feel they could be better, design and animation wise...I understand that normally the client and the time to make the videos are the ones marking the quality and style...animation tend to be just awesome in their shorts, and the characters too, but when it comes to this other style i don't really like it...all the girls look the same, and all the characters tend to look like toys...don't get me wrong, still top noch quality, i just think their effects are at a much higher level than their characters...

Warcraft is heavily influenced by Warhammer. Warhammer is late to the computer game field but has caught up nicely. At a glance they look almost identical but once you get into both worlds you'll see theres lots of differences that make them both unique.

Great Cinematic. nice seeing a squigg hopper and the greater demon at end(can't even attempt to try to spell its name Tezzasomethingorother...lol). lol the choppers seem out of place but dwarfs in Warhammer are inventors and along with choppers and the rotating guns you see in short also make tanks and other machines that border on steampunk.

Congrats on a great Cinematic to all involved.

Is it just me or does an ork start runing out of the castle after the ball takes out the front gate? And then they storm the castle from the same side? Or dose the ball take out the gates from the inside? That would make more sence...
And on a side note I think this looks fantastic, dont get me wrong, but it feels like it was "written" buy a 10 year old kid. Its a bit "and then, and then, and then" for my tastes.

Fantastic work by Blur, an epic scale piece, the particle TD needs a big pat on the back for this one. This is a very popcorn piece with great action, but I think the Blizzard trailer for Lich king delivers a more satisfying narrative, instantly giving those not familiar with WoW an insight into this ancient, fallen king whereas the Blur trailer is more an overview of the ablities and 'feel' of particular races and classes.

Loved the humourous touches in the WAR piece - squid herder (great characterization and animation on him!), orc bashing the soldier off a step, orc catapulted into a building. It would have tickled me if the epic magic boulder had arc'd across the sky and then fallen short and hit a bunch of goblins but I suppose there would have been a problem getting into the fortress then....

gr8 job. But seeing previous works from blur I think they cud have done it much better. Some actions were confusing and readability was poor. Although most will like it for the cool effects and eye candy, but I think it lacks a better storytelling. Great job on the FX and coolness, poor job on storytelling.

DisturbeD2k

absolutely right, for a second I forgot it was a trailer for WH online.:argh:

Personally I thought you did lol. You stated that the Helicopters were out of place and I reminded you that they existed in that universe. Like cars in ours.
Sorry I gave a rather brief description before.
I worked in Games Workshop for my gap year and into the hobby for over 10. I often had kids come in and ask why there were tanks and helicopters in the fantasy universe.

I usually respond: If crazy arcane magic and having to endure endless wars happened in our universe. How would our technology develop? Most likely not like how it looks today.

Also that dwarfs are an ancient race within the system and so there technology is the most advanced. But have little to no magic speciality as a result. I admit I don’t collect dwarfs so my knowledge on them isn’t perfect.

Sorry if I may be explaining something that you all ready know but your first response of

"Those choppers look out of place"
to
"off course I know there are choppers in that universe"

Portrayed to me that you might be a little confused. If you are talking mainly about aesthetics then I believe the choppers are in the scene is for the dwarf fans.

No offence meant to be intended

Wow! This almost turns me into a gamer...almost. By far the best work i've seen by Blur yet. What did they use for the Hair and Cloth. Was it XSI perhaps? That was some inspiration. Definitely made my day.

Cloth and hair were simmed in Max to the best of my knowledge. Rigging and animation were in XSI. Everything else was in 3ds

Yeah, with that DoW2 cinematic and the ones from WOTLK and AOR, there's three absolutely over the top fantasy CG stuff out there.Simply jaw dropping, although I have to admit I like the WOTLK best because of its "cool" palette and the subtle yet effective animation on Athas.I bow down to the artists who worked on all those cinematics, though, you guys are incredible !

Finally got to watch it. Amazing work congrats blur. I usually can't stand to watch game cinematics but I watched this one 3 times on repeat.

Yeah, a lot of game cinematics tend to be filled with cliches and wannabe directors trying to mimic well-known films, without much originality. This one was actually pretty fun to watch. I watched it a couple of times too.

Sorry to burst ya bubble, but everything i just is a lame ripoff from Blizzard and the Warcraft world, even the story.

Dwarves, Elves and Human form an ALLIANCE? Where did i heard that before? Ow yeah right HERE (http://www.wowwiki.com/Alliance).

Looked great though.

sorry to burst your bubble... but warhammer is based off the boardgame from the early 1980s and most things from both games are probably based a little bit on lord of the rings and other earlier fantasy books

nice lookin cinematic..

This 'alliance' in fantasy stories is about as typical as dragons breathing fire.
I can't think of any I've read from any author inwhich they were natural enemies.
Not saying there aren't any. So I too give this nod to Tolkien without knowing any better.

And the cinematic is a blast!

Isnt it all just a rip-off of Tolkien? :arteest:

When I say cliches, I don't mean premise. Lord knows if all developers had to come up with unique premises, we'd have very few video games left in this world. What I meant was the direction. The camera moves, the camera angles, the choreography of the action sequences, the editing, the framing of the shots...etc. Most cinematics have no originality or even fluidity in the way they are directed and edited--they just mimic whatever is famous or well-known out there.

Sorry to quote you like every one else but funny enough I do beleve you some what.
Of course I totally disagree that there entire history has been copied from WOW. Warhammer is 25 years old and has a lot more depth in its history then warcraft can dream of. But age or rec, is starting to look more and more like warcraft.
I saw the character creation screen and thought....hmm the orcs look different in lich king.
Also since when do dwafes and elves fight on the same side. Since when have orcs actually been organised! Orcs dont full back when a stupid chaos horn is called they keep fighting cause they are better then stupid chaos folk!
We know the high elves are good and the dark elves are bad, but what about the wood elves. Who are they going to fight with.
The fantasy universe has usually been very respected with comics, novels and new rule books for the past 25 years. This game looks like they want to change how the entire system works. There has never been such a war causeing such aliances.
I will play the game when it comes out but I dont like the idea of choosing my ork character and having to fight along side chaos scum.
A good amount of GW staff also agree that this game is heavily influenced by WOW.

All covered in the Load of the Rings (the books) thats since when.
Usualy comes down to a 'a single Greater Evil that will destroy them all if they dare to fight it alone' yada-yada.

How long must we wait until we get a feature length movie? It already has more appeal than the latest Star Wars outing. And it wouldn't be the first movie based on a game.

...fanboys...silly kids...Blizzard and Blur, both kick ass. I mean, saying that they ripped off this and that is ridiculous. Last time I checked they were a company simply doing what the client tells them to do...and doing it very well I might add.

This was very cool. Obviousely this is Warhammer so they're not aiming for realism with the characters, but the effects and animations were top-knotch. The WoW video was nice, but very little was happening in it. This has way more animation and tons of cool effects. I enjoyed it.
