View Full Version : lip sycning
spngebob111 08-20-2008, 06:04 PM Hey,
I was wondering whats the best way about setting up my animation.
I have two characters which I want to animate in a scene , my question is do I set up the lip syncing in advance and then import them into the scene ?
The problem is , if i do this and animate a character with dialouge how do I make sure when the two characters are together in a scene that the timing stays correct ?
Basicly im having problems understanding the best way to combine characters dialouge, with body animation and keep the timing right.
I was also wondering , im using two cameras would I set these up at the start or do it at the end of the animation. Im working from refrence footage.
Thanks
Edit// I just thought , mybe its better to animate everything within one scene and just hide one character while your working on the other ?

That's the easiest way to do it, and done most commonly. You sort of need them together for eyelines and stuff. However instead of importing your characters reference your characters, that way you can turn them on and off and keep your scene light and easy.
With two camera angles, just start a new scene, and offset your sound by the frames you have already done.

thanks for your reply.
The problem is that there is a lot of strange geometry around the mouth area and its very confusing when I try to delete it.
I spent a good hour and half but still could not do it, I really want to finish it off myself but im still lost. - it seems even when I open the mouth a little after rigging it seems the mouth is still joined from the inside.
Thanks again,

Do you have setup where you animate the face separetely and then reattach it to the head later?

I always do the facial animation last so that you can match the emotion on the face with the body language.
You can create a camera, aim it at the character's face, and parent it to the head if you want a "face camera" to make everything simpler for yourself.
Also, setup your cameras first so you don't spend time animating something that will be off-screen.

I've tried several methods, and by far the best is to pose your characters at least first. I personally do the lip-sync last so I can concentrate on the body silhouettes and worry about the lip-sync later. Remember to put a camera on your character's face for later.
