Hello everyone! Just want to say this is a great site with a great community.

I just finished my new demo reel and would like to know where I can improve, what I should improve, and what I'm missing.

Here is the link to my 2008 animation demo reel:

http://vimeo.com/1008282

I have 2 more animations that I wanted to complete by the time this was finished but I got a call from my school asking for it, so I ended up rushing it and throwing it all together really quick. The 2 animations I wanted to include weren't and still aren't finished.

I graduated in March 2008 with an AS degree in Multimedia and have been very unsuccessful with my last demo reel. I was hoping this demo reel would do the trick.

All feedback is greatly appreciated!

Overall a very good and solid reel.

1)The Ball

When he throws the ball, really push the line of action a bit more in the anticipation so that when he throws it you can really feel the push

4) Soldier - When he gets shot, it should be abrubt. He should be pushed back from the impact of the bullet, with . Remember at those high speeds, bullet punch a very high force so they tend to affect a large area of the impact. See "Saving Private Ryan" for idea. The animation before that is good

6)This is one of your weakest animation so far. It's too pose to pose and you seem to repeat the poses "do you speak english" and "do you understand". You should take this out.

7)Watch out for you pops when he picks it the object

8)I hate bugs. This is one of your best executed shot, and I think you should place this more in front. Make this your second shot of your reel. Remember you should open with your best two shots in the beginning because of the time the animation director would have made up your mind about you in the first 20 seconds of your reel. Finish off with a decent animation

That was my quick opinion on that. Hope that helps

Thank you so much! I really need all the help I can get!

For now I will definitely take your advice and change the order in which the animations are shown.

I will take out the Rush Hour mouth sync and replace it with a MUCH better one when it's ready. Much better because I planned it out in 2D animation first.

As for the Popping in the pick up box, that rig was giving me problems from day one. As much as I tried to avoid it, the popping was always there on the arms  Should I still keep it anyway?

How long should a decent demo reel be anyway? I don't want to have it too short. maybe at least a 1min and a half?

Thank you again for all your help and taking the time to view my demo reel! I really appreciate it!

Yes, because it's a decent animation which shows you understand weigjt

I am aware of that rig, but remember IK popping is very real problem and not every production studio would have a anti poping feature in their rig. The main reason for popping is because you pushing the rig too far, which are easy fixes

I am presuming that you are contrainting the arm to the box. When you lift the box tilt the box towards your arm, at the spot where the pop is happening this would take away the pop. Just tilt it enough so that the pop goes away. You may have a pop on the other side, but who cares, I can't see it.

It's tough really, but remember a short animation reel with kickass animation is better than a long animation reel with ok animation.

One thing you must not do is FALL IN LOVE with your animation. It sound pretty obvious but once in a while we all do that. Remember the person on the other side would be seeing your reel for the first time, so for 1 minute or so you have his complete attention. Use those seconds well, because that would communicate what kind of animation skill you are bring to the table, eg from your reel you want to communicate that you can do cycles. So instead of having all three of them, just pick a better one. I think the soldier one is pretty cool, but you can throw in the robot animation.

I also noticed from the comments that you just graduated. For beginners reel it is a pretty impressive and I am sure you would not any trouble finding a gig. Most studios would cut you some slack for being a first timer and would hire you for your potential, which you obviously show you have.

keep up the good work and remember to keep on pumping on new animation while you are waiting.

Probably the most inspirational comment I've ever received! :) Thank you!

Your advice is definitely very helpful and I will use it to persue my goal as an animator.
For now I've taken out the lip sync animation and have rearrange the order in which the animations are shown.

Now I'm off to more practice practice practice.

Again thank you! I really appreciate the time you took to give me an in-depth review of my work!

Just a personal thing, but the title really put me off. The quality of the text and the animation was far less in the title than in the rest of the demo-reel. I would suggest removing it and putting simple txt, or a simpler better animated title up.

Otherwise, it's a pretty nice reel. Could do with minor tweaking but I'm sure you know this through the other comments. Good luck.
