View Full Version : texture/light/render - characters - ZrO-1
ZrO-1 04-25-2002, 07:04 PM Hi everyone, I just found this forum a few days ago and all I can say is WOW  the quality of work done here is really awesome. I'd like to participate in this T/L/R challenge, I just wish I wasn't coming in so late. This first pic is from a test render for the main characters from an animation I am doing for school. I also am working on a robot which I'll post later. So please let me know what you think of this. Thx

Great Beer,
Heineken :buttrock:
Ok, I think it is great your picture. And I sure want to see you robot
But this one is already renderd, I don't know if your robot also is rendered, but it could be more fun to see how you render and update it step by step. And if your robot isn't renderd you might do him/her.
Well Will soon see more of you:wavey:

thx Iguiniz.X.,
Since most of the character design/modeling/texturing has already been done, I don't have too many pic's of the different stages. I'll attach what I do have though. If people are interested I've begun work on the enviroment they are animated in (a bar of course :p ) and that I have more pics of since I'm still working on it.

Hey guys, well I have finnished the textures lighting and render settings for the enviroment for my group animation. The bottles are the same as the above pic with the lables (except animated of course;) )

OK, last update on this thread that I'll do without any new comments/crits. I got my caracters all animated and I did a 100 by-frame render of the animation to test. Here's one of the pics. I'd really like some C&C here.

Hey :)
Ummmm... I'm gonna be brutal....
Firstly - I do think your bottles are cool  Although possibly, you should have used less colours, and made the colours not as bright as well.
But errr... there is far too much reflection in your scene. It's a dead giveaway it's cg :shame: There is also a kind of over saturated look overall - it's a bit much to look at - you should choose the things you want to be the focal point, and lessen the other parts so to speak...
Ummm..... the ceiling is horrible (I'm really sorry, I'm being honest), and so are the walls. Those procedural textures look terrible  And the brick image you are using is nasty  The bump map for the bricks also seems to be the wrong way around - the bricks should stick out, not the mortar.
The wood textures all look kinda horrid. Especially the floor. The bump map on the floor also looks like it's inverted or something.
Get rid of that horrible gold texture running along the bottom of the bar - get rid of the reflection there (especially since people are gonna have their feet on it - it would be very dirty) and make the colour much duller...
The felt on the pool table needs to have the markings added ;)
The plants are too bright (the leaves)
The picture frames are too plain - I can even spot that wood pic that comes with max that you've used on it. Please make a new wood image (if you can, wood is a VERY tricky one to paint and a real pain in the butt), or find one that we haven't seen before...
Lastly, the modelling on the cocktail glass isn't believable - make the stem thicker or something...
Ummm I'm REALLY sorry to be so harsh, but I'm trying to be as constructive as I can
You don't hate me now do you?
I'm just worried that no-one has replied to you, because they didn't want to say what I just did. I'm really only trying to help.
I'm so sorry, you seem like a nice guy, and I really wouldn't want to hurt your feelings or pride ....
:wavey:
we can still be friends right? :)

hehehe Thx Leigh. I'm glad someone said something. I know the textures in the bar look like crap, this was my first time doing textures...ever :hmm:
I only really started using Maya back in October and I had to do this animation without much guidence or help from anyone at my school. LOL this forum has taught me more than my 2 semesters in 3D at school.
Anyway I'm not trying to make excuses, I know this thing needs major work, sometimes though, when you are teaching yourself how to texture while working on a project that has a deadline, you just have to settle at a certian point to get it done.
Thanks again for the crits...maybe I'll try and fix this thing after my semester is over this week.

 First texturing project EVER??!! Well in that case :applause: :applause:
I wish my first texturing attempt had looked as cool as this :) It really was something extraordinarily hideous (and I mean that in a bad way)...
I hope to see this scene progress as you do :bounce:

I should have been a little more specific in that last post. I have done stuff where I have messed around with the properties of different materials (color, trans, spec, reflec...) and I have done the tutorials in the "Learning Maya" book. But this was the first time I ever had to make complicated shaders for my self and use file textures I created...a lot of the stuff, as you mentioned, is procedural 'cause I haven't grasped UV mapping yet.

Yeah, but still.... for a texturing newbie, it's really pretty cool  At least you made an effort. If you look at the lack of participation in this month's challenge, it's because loads of people are scared of texturing. At least you tried, and I'm sure you learned a lot doing it, right? Because the only way to learn is by practising ;)

Thanx a lot Leigh
Yeah, I definetly agree about learning through practice. I learend a TON making this animation. More than I had learned in all of my other projects (all 4 of them ;) ) combined.
BTW...sometime next week I'll be posting a link to the actual animation. It's about 2 mins 20 secs long and has dialogue/lip-synching as well as music/sound FX.:p
