Hmm, I can't seem to get past the form, it keeps insisting a field is missing even though I've filled them all in.
edit: Ah, seems to be on the "country" pulldown, if you leave it the default it thinks you haven't entered anything in..I scrolled through it back to U.S. and it worked. Weird.

Well it's good to known the initial print run is limited as opposed to an unlimited print run which I assume will just go on till the end of time, depleting the earth of trees and leading to the eventual destruction of the ozone layer, demise of the planet and end of the human race;p
Ok, I'm being pedantic, it looks pretty nifty, i think I'll have to get a copy, switch the covers and submit it as my portfolio at my next job;)
where can I see who made it to exposé? :)

Not that I can afford this right now, it is very hard to resist lol. It will be awesome to have all the great work, in print, all in one place. I really do hope this sells a ton of copies so then we can look forward to many more compilations in the future :).
So, thanks and an early good luck on its success.
PS congrats to all those very talented artist that got their work in this :)
*EDIT* Silly me for even considering it...but then again if you are going to go, you might as well go in style...but do you happen to have a photo/description on what the leather covers will look like? It sounds cool just because it is "Limited Edition" but I also love the idea of the hard cover with Stevens beautiful girl (oh and dragon  ) on the cover...

Some more facts:
EXPOSÉ 1 will have 192 pages 297 x 220
Someone made a comparison to Spectrum -- EXPOSÉ is a larger format with more pages, wider diversity of content and higher print production quality.
The weight of the book is just under 1Kg -- determines shipping costs.
We will ship *anywhere* in the world that FedEx or UPS ships -- we are still negotiating for the final shipping contract and should have costs for shipping globally by the end of the week.
As we are shipping from Australia this includes countries that the US might not have shipped to.
We do not have final shipping rates to countries other than Australia, US and Europe. However, based on standard published FedEx and UPS rates you can make a guess at the rates to other countries -- some are cheaper then the US and some are a bit dearer.
Hard cover edition will have the same cover images as the soft cover and will include a dust cover as well.
The Limited Edition Leather bound edition. This is a *very* limited collectors edition that will be numbered and (possibly) signed by the editors to prove authenticity. We are thinking of auctioning Number 1 to establish the collectors value -- which we anticipate will be a lot more than the sale price. We are still working on the design on this edition -- we want it to be a distinct cut above what you could normally get.
For Artists who get their work in EXPOSÉ 1. We will be making a special run of the Limited edition book and offering it to them at pretty much cost -- we can't give anything away, but we want to give the published artists something special that will be worth a lot more than they have to pay the day they get it.
Sales of the EXPOSÉ 1 will be exclusively on-line for now. We have pushed the quality way up above the norm for high quality art books and it's just not possible to discount it heavily and to absorb shipping costs -- which you have to do to put it through volume distribution.
If you cant or don't want to order on line then get a relative or friend to order in the book for you -- even better get 10 or more people together and get a bulk discount (15%). If you have a favorite book shop then get them to order in the book from us at 25% for an order of 25 with reduced shipping costs also.

Size was in mm 297mm x 220mm
With a total of 192 pages -- taking out inside cover, masthead , editorial and artist contact listings that leaves 176 or so pages of images...
Thats room for 350 or so images from 250 or so artists.
The total number of entries were over 1,400
The number of entries nominated to go in the book were 917
here are the numbers for the catedories for 2D and 3D entries.
Architectural 10 122
Character in Repose 115 169
Character in Action 87 58
Environment 64 110
Mechanical 2 25
Still Life 2 14
Transport 6 68
Visual Effect 22 34
Total 2D monimations 308
Total 3D nominations 609
So about 1 in 4 images entered will get in print.
About 65% of entered images were nominated as suitable quality to get in print.
About 40% of the nominated images will get in print.
Judging the Awards is another matter entierly. The best 5 - 10 images from each category are nominated and the judges all vote for Master and Excelence. Judges are NOT permitted to select or judge in categories they have images entered in.

Wow, you weren't kidding on being short on mechanical stuff..I should have entered some of the things I had done already instead of working on a new organic piece. Ah well..off to EXPOSÉ 2. :D
Out of curiosity, and related to the "350 images from 250 artists", what's the ratio of the entries to number of artists? ie 1400 entries from X number of individuals?
P.S. The Spectrum mention wasn't meant as a dig btw, given the layout style and content, a comparison IS inevitable..I think it's great that you're out to kick it up a notch. Rock on.

Hi
A number of people have commented about the black backgrounds. Apart from looking very cool, there is a meaning behind the black background on the page layouts.
As digital artists, we start on a black screen, while traditional artists start on a white canvas. The black background is actually a tribute to the digital art.
Thanks to everyone for the support.

I personally love the black background. I was debating weather or not ot place a black 10 pixel frame around my final entry, and decided against it cause it might disrupt your layout process. Pics just look better against black, cause the white of the page wont be competing for attention with the artwork.
A VERY good choice IMO.

Hey Mark?
I debated to send a private email or post publicly... but figured others might want to know as well...
From the several pages displayed, I saw that my image was on the page... so I'm assuming it made it into the book... unless those pages are just tests... and a big tease :hmm:
Anyway, my question is:
I saw that you mentioned the artists will approve the art before the final print... how will this work exactly? Can we ask for color changes, brightness, saturation? Can we add information to the text? Reason is I noticed that my particular image could be a little darker... and since I'm anal... I was curious what, if anything, could be done.
So... hope this helps anyone else who has the same question.
Thanks.

OK two answers:
If your image has been used in a banner or on the sample pages than it's out intent that it is in the book as of now.
We will be putting PDF pages up with a web form for people to proof and check the text -- there will be a *very* strict time limit of 48 hours to check the text and either sign off on it or correct it.
There is no time to alter images at this stage. What you see on screen is generally lighter than what is in print -- I have also just done quick CMYK to RGB back conversions for the stuff you see on screen... so trust us on the colour/gamma -- everyone who saw their images on the Call for Entry cards was happy.
In future: ... we do want to set up some soft or private forum for entrants so the jury and other experts can give some feedback so that people can improve their images. From my teaching experience quality feedback plus 10% informed tweaking can dramatically improve results and help artists develope their talents... but that's all for the next issue as we are really pushed for time getting everything working for this first issue.

Life's beautiful :) The more I read here about this book, the more I want it.
Remember what it felt like when you were 5, and X-mas was only 2 days away ? Multiply that by 20. That's how I feel right now :)
And having one of you images in it, is like the coolest thing on earth.
Not for me this time, perhaps for the next book :)

....I've seen one of my images in the samples pages!....Wouhou!........I already reserved my copy of the Limited Edition.....
....You said that the artists in the book would have a special price for the limited edition........i'm lucky, i reserved the Limited Ed....but for the ones who reserved another edition.....do they have to cancel the reservation and wait to have the limited edition?.......I dont think that everybody who reserved a book wants to pay for 2 books!......

Update time:
I've just come back from the book binders -- we are really lucky that here in Adelaide we have a high end traditional book binder who does all the limited eddition jobs for Australia and also do some unique work that no one else in the world does! .. all will be revealed soon... and yes, we will be putting up photographs or comparable bound work; renditions of our's and Photographs once it's bound.
Now on to email confirmations:
We have emailed everyone who we recieved an entry from -- if you have not recieved a confirmation email by now then you need to contact Helen helen@cgCharacter.com.
Once we have done the layouts and have a confirmed list of whats in the book we will email everyone -- to confirm that you got in or not.
For those that did not get in we will be asking if you want your entry carried over for issue 2 and if you are happy for it to go up on the web in an online gallery of all images entered for EXPOSE 1... with artists contact details adn credits. BY putting everything up on the web (at a much reduced rezolution from the book of course) everyone gets exposure and if there were any typos or errors that get into print the web is the place you can put up corrections -- and current contact details if you move.

Entries have gone off to the Judges.
The Masthead and Editorial layout is pretty much complete and looking stunning -- we should be able to load up some more sample pages by the end of the week and a few more happy people will see their images are going into the book :)
All the ISBN and barcode number applications have gone off so we will have official listings in just a few days.
OH ... and as soon as EXPOSÉ 1 goes to the printers (in just over 2 weeks time) we will be selecting images and laying out the Call for Entry cards for EXPOSÉ 2. If things go to plan we would like to have these to give out at SIGGRAPH :)

Working hard here to get final locked down shipping costs to the rest of the world. I hope to make final decisions tomorrow on shipping... and now we are even looking at setting up our own shrink wrap and packaging line to save costs -- and every book shipped will be shrink wrapped so there is no chance of our nice high quality covers getting scuffed when they ship to you.
If anyone does place a pre-order and then needs to change it later -- that's no problem.
The Editorial layout is looking real fine now and there will be lots to update and show next week. he he... no peeking thill then ;)
Nominations are starting to come in from the judges already -- there are 10 images nominated for a section and then all the enigble members of the advisory board judge those for the top two spots.
now if I can just work out how to do everything *and* sleep that would be great ... damn, there isn't a snooz smiley.

Confirmations :
As I said before. If you have seen your work on a banner or a sample page then we are planning to include it in the book ... However we are going to email confirmations to everyone at the same time -- once we have done the layout for the whole book and know exactly what got in and what did not.
The awards judging is also happening as I write this and we will be making announcments mid-late next week now on this.
The week after next is when we will be finishing the whole book layout (we need to have the award winners to finish the layout) and letting everyone know whats in.
oh -- and the design just keeps getting better and better :)
This comming week we will be able to post more information about the exact print process, quality, and final shipping details -- lots of really good stuff :)

There is a bunch of new material to go up at the same time and I forgot to factor in that Monday 9th was a public holliday here in Adelaide.

Hey Mark,
Are you guys going to be trying to get any major chain stores to stock Expose'. I've already ordered my book so there's no problem there, but i'm worried about all the other people who may not have heard about it online ;)
I've already mentioned it to one Perth specialty bookstore so hopefully they might make some orders, but i was thinking of stores like Dymocks and Angus and Robertsons.... they seems to stock more and more computer books these days...
Dave
MarkSnoswell
06-09-2003, 05:26 AM
We would like to get into the major book stores eventually -- but to begin with we have chosen to make the highest quality art book that has ever been produced -- and thats not cheap.
So to begin with we have to sell directly to end users or to individual bookshops.
If we were to go through distributors like Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Nobel, Dymocks etc... then we would have to have doubled the retail price !!
This is even more so in the case of the Limited Collectors Eddition -- in fact we made a bit of a mistake there in the pricing -- it should have been at least 50% more. However wer'e not actually loosing money on it and we're happy that anyone who gets that eddition will be getting something unparralleled in quality and that will probably tripple in value before they even recieve it!
Having said all that we are looking at how we can push production costs down and the sales volume up so that we can go through physical distribution channels. There's no point in going through on-line resellers like Amazon as we can offer a much better price (including shipping costs), the same range of payment options and shipping locations.
We have looked at option of printing in major ovseas locations (Europe and US) but any chipping cost savings are outweighed by cheaper production here in Australia.
What we don't want to do is lower the quality in any way. Once the volume of the print run gets towards the 100,000's it's a different matter -- for now were down in the 10,000's volume.
10,000s already and 100,000's being a reality ?
thats one hell of an achievement.
I was wondering though, assuming you've already had over 10,000 reservations, and the option for reserving a ltd edition copy is still there.
How many as an estimate, ltd editions will there be ?
Will you take the option of ltd edition reservation down once a certain number has been hit or will you just try to meet whatever the demand is ?
I dont imagine you could say really but what kind of ratio is there between soft : hard : ltdedition reservations ?
MarkSnoswell
06-09-2003, 06:26 AM
Ah... we wish the reservation *had* already reached 10,000+ -- but not yet ;) reservations are going strong... spectacularly well actually seeing as all we have done is put up one litte news item.
The thing is that it's not viable to print less than 5,000 or so ... and it's a guessing game as to how many over 10,000 say that we print. There are real major issues in ordering things like paper even -- 10,000 x 1Kg books is 10 tonne's of paper! When we go to re-print there wil be at least a 10 week lead time to schedule everything.
We are having to judge inital print run volumes basd on pre-orders... and we do expect that we will sell out of the inital print run when we start advertising more widely... and when everyone gets their books and shows them off to their friends :)
So, please do get your pre-orders in. With over 250,000 unique visitors to cgTalk every month 10,000+ is not a big number to print.
Limited Collectors Eddition -- we are still deliberating on what the cutoff will be there -- it will be in the 100's and there will never be a re-print of these. It's a bit scary really -- they have been WAY more popular then we anticipated! As soon as we advertise just a little bit they are all going to be gone... We plan to auction numbers 1 - 10 in special boxes to set the collectable value -- and we expect that it will be way over the purchace price for everyone that gets a copy.
wow i would of thought more people would of tried to reserve a ltd edition than that.
guess thats a good thing :P
thanks for the info mark, its very eye opening.

Hey Mark, I was just wondering and I got worried. Ok, I sent in one early version of the image that I had done early on in case I couldn't finish it in time. I got the confirmation on that one... I then sent in the second image and no confirmation but I never noticed... if for some reason the better one never uploaded and I am accepted, is there a way I can send in the better one to be used instead? Little worried here :D

I'd honestly prefer an Annual release... otherwise i think it runs the risk of becoming just like a magazine. Keeping it to once a year would make it a little more 'special' IMO plus make it a little bit more prestigious to have your artwork presented in it. Plus i suppose the fact that a lot of people might not be able to afford it twice a year (although i kind of assume that production costs might come down once you are a couple of issues in and have the process etc right, not to mention possible international production as well).
I guess for me it would be like if we had the Olympic games once a year instead of once every 4 years there wouldnt be the same atmosphere and intrigue in it.

I also think an annual release would be more prestigious. It could become something that everyone looks forward to every year. Kind of like a Christmas for CG people.

I'll 3rd that...
Keep it special as an annual...
If the interest is there, perhaps make a quarterly Expose Magazine that has select works in it, and has tutorials done by the creators of those images selected.
So, to recap:
-- Hardcover high-gloss, high quality bound books as an annual (with a yearly special edition)
-- Quarterly high quality magazine 'From the makers of the Expose Annual' complete with tried and true tutorials from the folks who know.
And possibly some cool interviews... offset the delivery dates to counter Cinefex so that there's no competition, and we have great stuff to read every other month! :)

Hey!Guys,
i was kinda lookin forward to "Expose 2" release around Siggraph (i have already started working on my entry fr that:) ....anyways, i guess thats too early now....and also since many feel yearly is a better .(i guess taking a vote on that wud be a good way to decide).
I think AJE's ideas are good ....and i would also suggest that the we have a "Best Script"/Plugin"contest based on user friendliness etc..etc.., maybe even give free beta testing/feedback to the writer"(meaning..actually helping with better code)
we do have some awesome scriptwriters here,...
"Manus" is doing an awesome job with his Animan script....and im
sure many more will want to send in their new scripts.....and all these can be compiled into a CD to be released with Expose_2 hopefully.
I think Expose 1 is looking very good, and im sure the bookings will shoot once its released and people start havin a look at it.
certainly lookin forward to havin one fr me :-)

OK, That's been good feedback.
So how does something like this sound:
EXPOSÉ comes out once a year in time for SIGGRAPH. It includes the EXPOSÉ Awards.
During the year be bring out themed collections? -- specifically I was thinking of two based on the volume and type of entries we received.
EXPOSÉ -- Characters and other soft stuff.
EXPOSÉ -- Buildings, Cars and other hard stuff.
What do people think of that idea?
It's not a matter of trying to pack everything into EXPOSÉ. As the name implies EXPOSÉ is the grand exposition of the best art work. Tutorials and "master class" material are best left for a different high end magazine type format -- which is possible in the future.
For now there are other book formats we are looking at -- if you have ideas please let us know.

I have a suggestion for the next Exposé:
Why not rename the category "Mechanical" to "Science and Engineering"? Images with a "mechanical" subject would still fit in, but it would also be a place for medical or biochemical visualisation and the like - some these images do look awesome as well.
Generally speaking I always find strict categories rather limiting and I can even imagine an Exposé without them.
Besides that, I am also pro-annual.
Cheer,
Marc

I think that is a good idea. I don't have any problem with mini/specialty versions of expose coming out during the year. But I still agree with most everyone else on the forum, having something "bigger" that was an annual thing would make it a lot more prestigous and a lot more special.

SEASONLY & each season totaly CATEGORIZED by one type
for example:
1. Character / Creature / Organic Forms
2. Scenery / Stage / Landscape
3. Mechanical / Industrial / Auto
4. Still Life / Abstract Art / ...
may some works fit into 3 of above categories, then the artist will decide to submit to which volume, with the publisher's guidance.

Quick question: Do those of us that already reserved our copy need to do anything else, or will we just be contacted for payment details ( as it says in the confirmation email )? Probably a stupid question, but I'd hate to miss out on my limited ed!
BTW for what it's worth I prefer the idea of big yearly editions, perhaps with a related web site (ala 3D Festival & CG Challenge ) with updates, interviews with selected artists, tutorials and stuff, all as sort of an extension of CgTalk, something to aspire to for everyone who posts their work here.
Just a thought,

Yes, only the Limited Edition will be on sale initially. The rest of the orders will only be available in a week or so's time. This is because of the huge interest we've seen in the Limited Edition. We've capped it at 999 copies, each individually numbered. It's in black leather with gold leaf title, and it looks totally stunning. Well worth it as a collectors item.

email have been going out all day the people with images in the book -- We are sending our PDF's of page layouts for people to check the text.
There are still about 90 or so email to go out.
If you get an email and you see your page layout with MASTER or EXCELLENCE on the top of the page -- well you'll be pretty happy to see that you got an award :)
After all th emails go out we will then email everyone else who did not get in the book -- we need to know if people want their images listed on the web and held over of entry into issue 2.
This is all taking us longer than we had moped -- there is simply a massive ammount of work to do! ...
I am putting out photoreal renders of the Limited Edition book right now -- the e-commerce site is working and ready to go live -- we have PDF's and composite thumbnail pages of the entire book now !!
I have also just been doing the layout for the Grand Master award recipent -- no telling ;)
so sorry to keep some people hanging -- but we are going as fast as possible.
Every image in the book has been converted to CMYK at print resolution as it appears in the book -- the final step is to sharpen, add noise and fine tune colour balance if needed -- if we take just 2 min per image thats still 10 1/2 hours work to process the 357 images in the book.
and it's looking better every time we look at it :bounce:

Hello Mark. I'm glad to be on the book.
I have only one problem. The CMYK conversion isn't very good on my image. Is this because you haven't included an ICC profile on the pdf so I can't really see the correct colors on my computer or is there something else? Cause I've checked the CMYK conversion on Photoshop before I sent the image and it was extremely close to the original.(I'm a graphic designer so I can get pretty anal about these things....) Anyway there's nothing you can do right now but I was just curious.
Besides that the book layouts I have seen look great. Nice job. Can't wait to get it on my hands.
Oh one more thing
You said earlier that people who will be on the book will receive a special edition book. How do we order it on the web site? We will be given a special order number or something like that to be recognised?
MarkSnoswell
06-16-2003, 03:25 PM
All the ordering pages whould be up this week ... there will be some big announcments when things live. We havn't worked out the fine details yet -- but if everyone's happy with the layouts then we will bulk email everyone with details for ordering discount copies of the Limited Eddition -- one thing holding us up here is the exact cost of these... just hang in there.

all the images get tweaked slightly -- more or less... both to fit on the page with surrounding images and to look best in the print process we have chosen. Printing the Call for Entry cards gave a real good look at the colour balance process -- in general images will come out both flatter and darker in print...
However, more than likley there were some shifts in the preview PDF's -- which had a default back conversion from RGB to CMYK without colour managment. We really had to slam these previews fast to get out to people to check the text. SO dont worry -- what you see is just these preview PDF's which are NOT the ones that go to print. We know we're not going to be perfect, but all the Call for Entry cards came out great which makes us feel pretty confident about the overall process to print.

hello
I REALLY want know about the special price of the limited edition for the artists that got images in Exposeé.
Hope I'm not late for this
Just received the confirmation of my entry.
ps - I'm talking to my friends to buy more than 10 books so as to get the discount, :D
Is there any restrictions if I'm not a school or a store?

No one misses out -- we have reserved a special run of the limited eddition books just for the artists in the book. These are in addition to numbered seris of limited eddition books availble for general sale.
The artists eddition will have a different first page that acknwledges their entry. We will do a bulk email tomorrow probably with more details... we are still in the proces of going through inital responses and text changes. I expect that it will take another day to hear from everyone we emailed.

Just two questions.
1. If you weren't accepted into this Expose and you get that confirmation letter tohave your painting included in the next one, does that mean it goes for the next round as it is, or you get a chance to improve it and upload it again?
2. I read from somewhere that you post all the submitted art to Expose's homepage. Does that mean a word list of them or thumbnails or something else?

Ok.. two things following up from the book.
We will be emailing everyone that did not get in and asking them if they want us to carry over their image for future issues or not -- I suspect that many people will say no because they want to improve their work.
Everyone in the book and everyone that wants us to carry their images forward will get a screen rez version of their image put on the BallisticPublishing web site ... this gives exposure for people not in the book. This will happen about the same time as the book comes out - late next month.
For images in the book the web listing is also quite important for a number of reasons including:
* Users can update their contact information.
* If there are any copyright infringment or people or clients not credited for an image we can immediatly update the web.

hell no ... in fact we would encourage this. Although it's counter productive to get togethre with people already on cgTalk -- as BallisticPublishing is the entity that earns the money to support cgTalk in the future...
However -- we want people to come up with schemes to sell lots of copies to everyone else :) ... we are working really hard to get the shipping costs down also for bulk shipments to one address.
The major break points for volume sales will (probably) be at 10, 25 and 40. At 40+ we may be able to cut the shipping cost by half.
As far as we are concernd you get a privelaged status and we consider you a "reseller" to look after once you order 25 or more... it should be possible for enterprising individuals to make a bit of money as local suppliers of books :)
Once things get going and the books are in stock it will be possible to ship large single orders on the same day we recieve the order -- all shipments are going by FedEx or UPS (whoever wins the contract) and will have tracking numbers and will be insured. So if you do it right you can collect peoples money so you can do a bulk order and get the books back to people within a week -- without ever having to raise the money yourself for the bulk order.
Oh .. while I mention shipping -- Every single book will go out by FedEx or UPS -- every shipment will have a tracking number and the the recipent will be emailed with the shipping details as soon as the order goes out. Every book is also indivudally shrink wrapped (yes , we have to buy our own skrink wrap machine as well) so there is no chance of the nice covers getting scuffed.
ooo ... that was a long rave -- you just wouldn't believe the amount of work that is going into getting thigs going....
so back to it now...

So if I don't want to carry my image forward, the image I sent for this Expose won't be shown anywhere... Hmm.. Ok. I'll live with it.

hmmm. well, no remorse anyway, as i will have encouraged bengal and ornicar to absolutely post their work for exposé too. quite ironic, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
keep it up, and good luck for getting everything done.

I'd like to ask about the emails that were sent out. Lunatique told me he'd seen my piece on a sample page, and also that he'd selected one of sparth's pieces - but I didn't receive a confirmation email, and evidently, neither did sparth...
Could you tell us whether we made it into the book? Dying to know :)

Hi Mark, I was just curious as to the selection process. Could you elaborate upon this process, and how the Advisory Council was involved? Were the advisory council involved in the final selection about what went into the book? What steps were involved in its completion?
Thank you for your time.
Cheers

OK... We have heard back from the vast majority of people and there is very little chance that list will change now... So, the list please...
First a word on the selection process: There was a first round of selecting everything that was even remotely (wasn't crap) worthy of printing ... this was categorized into one of the categories and then in a second round Advisory board people selected a short list of 10 - 20 images to be judged. Then everyone on the jury ranked the top 5 images in each category -- votes were tallied and each category was awarded one Master -- 6 categories had a clear single Excellence winner and 4 categories had 2 - 3 Excellence winners. There was also a single Editors choice Master for one truly outstanding collection of work by an artist.
The Advisory board came up with a list of candidates and arrived at a unanimous choice for Grand Master.
The editors selected front cover and back cover images for the book -- the soft cover and hard cover have the same images for front and back cover and the limited edition used the back cover image from the other editions as it's single front cover insert.
After laying out the Winners all of the potentially available images were used to do the page layouts -- about 50% of those got onto the pages. The vast majority of the layout was done without knowing who the artists were -- and was based solely on the combination of image quality/subject/composition/rezolution. It was *extremely* difficult to balance out everything -- However the current page layouts are rated as *spectacular* by everyone who has seen them and we are certainly way ahead of anything else anyone has seen anywhere. There were a few tough decisions and a few images that were cropped more than we or the artists would have preferred -- bat at the end of the day the over all result is spectacular and everyone's images look great on the pages.
So, without any further delay, here is the list of Entrants and Images that are in:
If you are on this and haven't sent a reply email us back yet please email helen@cgCharacter.com with the subject EXPOSÉ 1 Confirmation

Congrats to all!!
Hopefully by next year I will have enough skill (or even just some dumb luck) to have something worthwhile to enter heh. Can't wait to see all this wonderful art in print form.
Just so you know, I hold all of you that created such awesome work, accountable for making me order one of these books even though I can't afford it lol. Just way too good to miss even if I will have to wait for the sunlight to shine through my windows to see it since the electric bill be come second heh :p
*EDIT - Mark, just to make sure, the actual order page hasn't gone up yet right? I have reserved one but wanted to make sure I didn't miss an update that payments are being accepted...

Think this will be very nice.i sure hope there is more for these artists then exposure. They can get that here all they want me thinks.
Book should be very nice however. It would have been nice to see some people get maybe 4 entries instead of 6 or 2 instead of 4,that way some other close call entries would have had the prevlidge of being in.Just my 2 cents. It's all politics I know,I know. ;)

hello there!!
i wanted to ask something, without any willing to put some mess here, but here :
i am grateful and very happy to be part of the book, and everybody selected here is very gifted. my wonder is : how is it possible a master like sparth, for me one of the 20 most talented digital painter out there, way more gifted than a lot, and who did a wonderful, balanced and complete pic, has not been selected? when some people got sometime 6 panels for their images?
i don't really think anybody could honestly tell sparth's skills are not sufficient ; so what could have happened?
if i ask, it's just that i'm not understanding the whole process of that... and i wanted to share my wonders.
thx again!

I wonder something to...
How it's possible that the menber of jury have been selected and nominate...
I never see that, a jury give price to himself...STRANGE...
Well done to all, who selected in Exposé, by this strange selection :)

No...we already answered this. If a jury member entered in a category, they were not allowed to vote in that category.

The CGtalk staff are very honest & generous, you don't believe but I know a few cgtalk's MODs that didn't have get into the artbook! though their works are awesome. (for example try to find Tito in the list!)

hey congrats to everyone who entered and got in.

You are in,yes I understand now.
No one would question there honesty and generosity. But they are friends, mostly close,it's alot of politics, and most sane people cannot argue that.
I think that is a fine list,I am a lurker for the most part, but I still think it would have been best to have the people with 6 or 4 entires get perhaps 4 or 2,this way so many more deserving souls would have gotten in.Plus more diverse artwork for all to see.
My 2cents.

Having not made it into the book, I too am disappointed. And I admit, that for about 15 minutes I was pretty upset. However, I realized the effort in trying to match up a layout that works with my entry and doesn't just seem like the image was just pasted in there, was quite a lot of work. Frankly, my skull is a little hard to place. It just doesn't play well with others. This is ok though, because I have ideas about what to do next. And if my image gets into a gallery, or a supplimental magazine, this is fine.
Face it, well over a thousand images were submitted. Hundreds probably as soon as the ftp went live. I hover in the IRC #cgtalk room and I saw the news that submissions were on and I jumped on it as fast as I could. I think I was somewhere in the 50's as my number went. Frankly I believe the rush was to get this one done by Siggraph (Which I am unable to attend. Hey! anyone wanna sponser me a trip to siggy? ;)) So a lot of details were rushed in making this happen. So hey, it's their first one. I gaurantee you it was a learning experience. Think of it this way: Expose 1 is the mark of a new beginning. It clears up all the past cgtalk postings, and puts a comprehensive array of images that marks the past of the cg talk forums. Yay!
Now, its time to make a new beginning. A fresh start. Work on your art and lets make this community one hell of a place to look at!
So be happy for your fellow cg community. Those that made it in, congratulations. Fine work indeed. Those that did not, congratulations on contributing to the CGI community.
Cheers!

I sure that the jury is honest, and very great graphiste...
And i understant that a member who post image in a category can't vote for himself...
But in a jury, like Oscar or Cannes or what ever selection, did the jury put is work in the séléction ?
WHoever, here works are amazing. It's just a question of...

No. If a jury member had a single entry in a section then they could not contribute to the short list for that section.

NO matter I've got entered or not, I pre-ordered it before I found out that my works has been accepted. and be sure that if Tito or Chris (Sigma) 's work have not been entered, not because of politics, just because the independency of the juri. I agree that they may put 3 instead of 6 from some ppl then free enough space for other talents, but probably they have reasons for that. and remember there will be Expose2, probably better than this.
this is the firts book in the world that is published in this way, & support it, cause having this is better than not having this!
kodus to cgtalkers!

I am very glad of exposing my image "Depósito" in EXPOSÉ but I must to say that I complain the excessive cropping that has deteriorated the image excessively.
there maybe is not another way to place my image?
what do you think?

EXPOSÉ 2
Lots of people have been asking about EXPOSÉ 2 already.
Yes it's happening and based on the *amazing* response to the first issue it will be a huge event !
Everything went astoudingly well getting EXPOSÉ 1 together in an incredably short amount of itme -- the rush has been to be ready to ship before SIGGRAPH and to take copies to show everyone there.
We know how we can make improvments in the lead up to EXPOSÉ 2 -- and lots of time will really help. We want to give people to get really good quality peer and expert feedback on their work with plenty of time to improve their skills before entering work. Right now though we are still focusing on getting EXPOSÉ 1 through the printers and shipping, so you probably wont see anything official happen untill after SIGGRAPH.
Other books:
We have been getting suggestions for other books to do and we have a few of our own ideas that we want to follow up on. We will be anouncing what we intend to do next soon. We are still keen to hear from people on ideas for things they want us to do and from people that feel they could contribute to a book themselves.
ALthough we're not ready to make any firm announcments just now it's safe to say that there will be several opportunities during the next year to get work in books other than the big annual EXPOSÉ.
So ... start polishing those skills now and posting work in progress -- and the rest of you try and post some real good suggestions to help improve everyones work rather than just loads of "fan boy" stuff.
