View Full Version : How many differences between Motion Math and Expressions?
oak_lee 06-02-2003, 10:19 AM so far as I know......
MM is a simplified version of the widely used C programming language,to write and run scripts that use a special language and mathematical equations to generate keyframes.
And Expressions is based on JavaScript 1.2, can create a relationship between two properties.
Any more??

More..... How often does u use then?
And How did you use it?
I study MM and expressions for two weeks, but still don't know how to use it in my wokes. I feel the keyframes is enough.

Hi,
Keyframes aren't enough if you want to animate something based in a audio source information. Trough Motion Math you can use audio to drive any parameter from the layer including FX parameters, it is a very nice feature and very handy sometimes.
Do this and check it out: (I'm not really sure about the steps in here but is something very close to this if I'm not mistaken)
1. Create a Simple Text on a solid
2. Inport some audio file into your comp
3. Select the Text layer
4. Open the Motion Math dialog box and load "layraud.mm"
5. Set layraud.mm to drive tranparency or scale
6. Set the limits for the parameter
7. Hit OK
8. Hit 0 (zero) and have fun!
obs: You can apply multiple layeraud.mm and set each one to drive a diferent parameter.
I hope that helps!
See Ya!

Yes, this script is cool !!!
And I use it before I come to study Motion Math, one years ago, when I fist use AfterFX.
THIS powerful tools is good for the motion graphy.
Now,after study all of the effect,I want to study more about animation. So I think the Motion Math and Expressions both act important part in AfterFX.
I read the Tutorials in aefreemart.com and jjgifford-expressions(http://www.jjgifford.com/expressions/)
and JJgifford say,
"When to Use Expressions
When you want a live link...
When you want to copy just one parameter from a parent...
For ¡®automatic¡¯ animation...
To add randomness to a parameter. "
AND say Expressions is more powerful than Motion Math
"Expressions: Expressions are similar to Motion Math, but maintain ¡®live¡¯ relationships. While Motion Math scripts simply leave behind a set of keyframes, Expressions remain attached to your parameter, and work alongside any existing keyframes. With Expressions, changes to one layer may be reflected in another, long after the Expression was initially applied.
Of these types of relationships, Expressions may be the most powerful, but also can be the toughest to create, with the least assistance from After Effects.
"
IS any more Tutorials or project use Motion Math and Expressions, that I can find in the internet?
