Hi!

I have a project made in Maya 5.0 that I need to open in Maya 4.5 (need to use a plug-in for 4.5). I spent the weekend trying to figure out how to do this. Its not that important that the lights, cameras and textures are included. But I would really need the grouped geometry.

Any ideas how to solve this?

P.S I tryed to export the group as .OBJ. But when I reimport it i get a "Result: 1" and nothing happens.

try the same thing you would have done for 4.5 -> 4
Save you 5 file in .ma
Find another 4.5 .ma file.
Open both up in Text app (WordPad, etc)
copy the 1st 10 lines in the 4.5 .ma file over to the 5 .ma file, and replace the 1st 10 lines in there with the ones you copied from 4.5
save that and open up in 5
it should work
Just as long you didn't use any of the new features in 5...

hope that helps :)

You should just be able to look at the top of the .ma file and manually change any references to '5.0' to '4.5'....

Then when you load it up, if you get errors, check the Script Editor for line numbers, see what it is, and, if you want, delete..

You may find a number of Mental Ray nodes mentioned in the 5.0 file that you may not be able to load up in 4.5..

That sounds like an interesting solution. I'll try it as soon as I get home. I'll let you know if it worked or not...

Thanks...

It certanily worked for me going from 4.5 -> 4.0 - as I said, your main problem will probably be nodes that 5.0 has that 4.5 doesn't - like Mental Ray ones.....

It worked!!!

...and yep. I had a couple of errors in the script editor. But i just deleted those lines. Also had a problem when I started to render with MR v1.5.1. Gave me a "fileerror" for a couple of TIFF-images. But after resaving the images without the LZW-compression everything worked perfectly.

Unbelievable. I would never have figured this out of my own. Thankx alot.

Hmmm....

Just thinking about the usefulness of a generic Maya file convertor..... A stand-alone app that would convert files for you, and warn you about functionality that would be lost when downgrading files, etc....

Sounds like an interesting idea Hugh
Know if such an app already exists?

otherwise....start cracking! :)

hehe - first I've gotta get my finals out of the way - although they will all be finished in 5 and a quarter hours time!

The one thing I'm not sure about here is working out what will work in which versions - I almost think that it'll have to be compiled with the libraries from all of the different versions of Maya, and I'm not sure if that's possible....

Ah well - I may well take a look at it, but I'm not promising anything soon...
