View Full Version : Bandsaw?
paul k. 06-02-2003, 07:53 AM Hello, I have recently downloaded the EXP version of XSI, and I am wondering if there is a tool for modeling similar to one in Lightwave called Bandsaw? What it does is to add geometry to a row of polygons. Unlike just cutting a row of polygons though, if you were to select say polys along an arm then add bandsaw it would add a spline all the way around that arm. Sorry if this is a newbie thing or if I didn't explain it well.
Thanks in advance.

From one former Lightwaver to another:
select an edge, right click, select split edge (w/ split control), when the menu pops up, turn on 'parallel edge loop' and move the split where you want it. ALTERNATIVELY you could go ']' + middle click of the mouse on any edge to get an edge along any row of polys.
Hope this helps, I'm new to XSI (1 month and counting!), I don't quite know the names of all this stuff, but I'm getting there.
Some of the other XSI forumers undoubtedly have better suggestions :buttrock:

One more way of doing this:
Select the edge that you wan't to saw. Then press Shift+D (subdivide Poly/edge). In the pop-up select 'parallel edge loop' and the number of cuts you wan't
Also check out some scripts that mimic LW tools here:

And if you haven't already, get the awesome RCTools from:
http://www.claus-figuren.de/rt/
This free plugin has lot's of useful tools like for selecting edgeloops, edgerings, polyloops, capping holes, smoothing points etc.

There is also a new edge loop feature in V3.5 which was recently shown at our User Group.

Thank you so mutch guys for the response, I will give it a try. I also wanted to know which type of XSI did you all buy there is such a different range in pricing that I am a little bit confused. I work for a studio not using XSI and I want to begin using it at home. I would also like to be able to render on other machines I have at home set up for rendering. Is this possible?
Thanks for any help you may have.

Hmm, lots of interest in XSI from LightWave users (including me), I wonder if NewTek have noticed...
I think it's the (mostly) text based UI that makes it feel more natural to LightWave users than the icon heavy apps. I've yet to progress beyond the "goofing around" stage with it but even so I'm impressed. Clearly a great deal of thought has gone into XSI's UI and workflow design.
Having said that I have a annoying LightWave user question of my own :);
Is there a way to drag/select subpatched vertex positions by clicking on the curvy line intersections derived from the control cage? That's one of the few things I'd miss from LightWave...

Terry

No, that is not available in XSI... not yet anyway.
yeah RCTools is the way to go on this one. and about Lightwavers and XSI.. it's an easy jump to make since XSI's subds are the closest thing to LW's subds.
Softimage should pay Claus for his RCTools and integrate/enhance them for the future. they rock.
