hey!

i need to make sand clock animation and it should look realistic.
i was thinking about deforming geometry, which would need very good texture to
look good, but it would be though thing to do.
I guess that would be overload for particles, cause i would need lots and lots of them :).
Anything else? Realflow ( which i don't have) ?

i'd just like to gather some opinios/experiences, so shoot them out :)

cheers

I'd use deforming geometry and map a radially animated texture upon in to simlate the downrunning sand. A good old Sunburst Shader with the right parameters might work wonders here.

The sand stream itself could be similated with TP.

slc,

Depending on what version of 4D you have, Thinking Particles, if you have it, or if you have an older version, there was a free plugin called "Fizz" that had balls pour into a glass jar.

You could parhaps model most of the sand pile with geometry, and apply a texture, then just have Fizz (or TP) pour a layer on top of that, to keep your particle count down. Unless you plan on having a long shot of the hour glass filling from empty to full! (some art house performance 3D piece... hourglass... in real time...) : )

Maybe the "dusting" of particles on top would work, and would could get a text, bump mapped on the geometry.
