I just downloaded Maya PLE, and everything works just fine and dandy. However, when I try to render I get a fatal error. No matter what is in the scene I still get a fatal error. Does any one know how to fix this problem? I've checked Maya's website and found nothing. Any help will be most appreciated.

Please post Maya related questions in the Maya forum.

I am moving this thread there now.

Well, it would be helpful to tell us what the error message says :)

There are two error messages that appear, after I click on them maya terminates.

the errors read:

The instruction at "0x77f83905" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
=========================================
The instruction at "0x77f58dc5" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Thanks ahead for any help.

That's bad news :hmm:
Maybe your windows is going down?
Xp or 2000? PLE should work fine with both, though..

Let's begin with the obvious: try to restart windows, see if it works then..
Try to reinstall PLE.. or do a virus scan, you never know..

I've already re-installed Maya. I've done virus checks, and I have even re-formatted my harddrive and re-installed windows, but still no luck. I think it might be hardware, but I can't see why.

what are your system specs?
especially video card ram etc

Or maybe you have a faulty ram module..
Get memtest86 and do a test.

my computer has XP, and it has a 1.6 Ghz processor, 256 MB of Ram, 16 MB integrated video card. It is a laptop. Is there any way I can upgrade my video card? I found an option that allows me to change the amount of space that my hard drive uses as ram. Right now it is at 386 MB. If i raised that would that help? Im desperate. Thanks for your help.

XP with 256 MB of RAM? I'm surprised Maya even runs on it. I don't really think that virtual memory would help anything... it may be one reason why you're getting that error. I never mess with it because it usually screws something up (I'd say you'd need to be fairly confident that you know what you're doing with it before you change those settings). XP by itself would take up more than half of your RAM, and I just don't think that virtual memory is as fast or reliable as hardware RAM. My advice is upgrade your RAM and reset the virtual memory settings.

yeah XP takes a lot of ram... and maya takes a lot more. Also, 16mb video card ram is pretty low for 3d..
before i was using 32mb video card in lightwave and i often got a similar error to the one you describe.
Changing the HD allocation of memory wont help as that is only virtual memory.
I recommend ram of 512+ and new video card if you really wanna get it going.
its a bit pricey unfortunatly :(
and im not sure how easy it is to upgrade a laptop...

Well, i AM using xp and maya5 with 256mb ram, 16mb video card with no problems.. never got that error.

Beside checking for faulty memory module, did you install some fishy software? antivirus, firewalls, etc?

Maya is just weird like this. I have seen many very odd problems within maya although all of their hardware and software thingels are hmm. i dont know. good enough to where maya should work no problem.

but im not sure if it is the video card being that the problem is with the software. right. but i guess it could be. kinda sucks for you though. but look on the bright side. if you cant do renders you wont be a stupid ass like me and do nothing but cool renders with nothing but primitaves for the first 1.5 years(yeah i was pretty stupid). and you can concentrait on something like modeling or animation or some other thing that doesnt require a render done.

I personally think it may be a sofware problem wheather it be with Maya itself or another app. that is screwing around with maya i dont know.

tell us what other Appz you got running on your machine.

Have you got any antivirus or anything running? 256MB is really too low for Maya on Windows. Running on IRIX/Linux that would be no problem, but that's another story.

You really want a gig for Maya on XP. Even if you have it running fine on 256MB, if you try to render anything complicated it'll be page-faulting like crazy which will triple your render times.

my freind has i think that much ram with xp home and only a 16 meg video card and i think he has an amd with about 1.4 ghz and runs maya fairly well oh. and it is a laptop is it is about just like your comp. sir Blot.
and the thing that sucks the most is that he renders at almost the same rate as i do. and im running a sweet laptop with a P4 2.4 ghz over a gig of ram and i think a radeon 7500 vid card with 64 megs of mem. my computer is really stupid or something.

Hi blot, still searching?

Give this a try: In windows go to your display properties, and change the option for hardware accellaration to the lowest level. Well since im on Win2k and german version too, I can't tell you what it's called exactly ... something like problem solving and there is a slider for that hardware accelaration - push it to none and try rendering. A friend of mine had the same error and this was the only way to get maya rendering.
Hope this helps.
