Geoco 06-01-2003, 06:59 PM Hey. Something I started, any comments appreciated. Still going to add more details and whatnot. Curious if anyone thinks the base shape should be added to.

I'm pretty new to modelling and all the stuff that goes with it. How can I use mats and lighting to make one of those renders where you can really see the object? I see people using them al l the time.

Hmm, this better? There are still some jaggies cause I haven't had time to run a render with production quality AA.

Hey again. I've been busy with finals and soccer, but decided to start anew with the arms. So far I've done only one, but I want to hear from people if this design is better than the other.

Fun drone! Reminds this one of the probes sent to Hoth....? But, very cartoony.
Is somewhat-goofy the direction you desire, or do you want something "realistic"? Certainly the new arm hints toward a more believable technology, but I don't know if that's your desire. Do you have an end vision that will help guide you? Even a vague one?
The way I see it, you can go either way... but, critiques will better suit you if they're rooted in some understanding of your goal. I like things about both the early and later versions, but they're peas from different pods...
 Don't be discouraged! Keep going!

William, thanks for the reply first. Second, I'm trying to go for a more realistic look. Any help as to how I can achieve this look is, once again, much appreciated.

I think LIMBAUL_ABIGGOR made a good suggestion about throwing in some hydraulics on the arms... although it's not crucial. Certainly the lower portion of the arm seems a little flimsy (the chopsticks extension), and could use something more.
There's a cartoonish quality to a number of the protrusions ... one thing has a toilet-plunger look (Or Dalek arm), another looks like a raygun from the 50's, and another looks like a dildo.
The cockeyed nuts-and-bolts on the upper half of the shell don't help your drones "scare" factor, either...
...Regarding the grasping capabilities of the arms, you should include a broader variety of "hands". The ol' pincer-claw has its place, but due to extremely limited function, it's place is mainly on movie bots from yesteryear.
I would suggest something with more than 2 digits.. something that looks like a battery of syringes... something that looks like an input plug... Big knives... Whatever.
You can get all kinds of creative with the arms, and they'll help to tell about the drones purpose -- they'll tell a story. Right now, the story is that this thing will pinch you. heh heh.:D
I don't think you should toss them out, but I DO think you need to alter some aspects of all these pieces.
Do you have any sketches that you're working from, or is this all on the fly?
I'm looking forward to your next update!

Ok, thanks for the input. First, got rid of the "toilet plunger" thing as I saw it's former use go down the toilet. (Im so sorry for that : )) The things on the upper half are going to be modified. I don't want the arms to go crazy with variety. I am shooting for this to be a recon drone. The design is loosely based off StarWars probe drones. I'm going to add one grasping utility and try to give it a human-esque five digit form. As for the bolts and them reducing their 'scare' factor, I have them as I want them. As a reconassaince drone, it doesn't WANT to be seen or found. The purpose is mainly to scout, pick up intelligence it can record and later give to it's user, and retrieve samples of desired objects using the arms and place them in the storage unit (boxy looking thing in back.) I still need to add the last arm (got two done now) and fix the upper half, which includes the aforementioned apparatus and giving it more detail and possibly one to two more optical sensors.

Hey, closeup of the hand w/ laser cutter. If an object is too large, the cutter can shape it to the right size. Still details to be put on it and the hand of course.

Here's it with beveled edges on arms. Previous were too blocky.. Please, help is much appreciated as what else to do. I'm stuck and don't know to keep modelling or attempt texturing.

William, do you have AIM or MSN? If so, can you tell me through here, or thru a PM?
William b. Hand

Hm... Got stuck, huh? Well, I find it can be helpful to work on something else for a while. I like to have a few things going on at once, so there's an opportunity to come back to a piece with a fresh eye, and it can help keep something from becoming "precious".
Do you know what's behind your freeze?
I don't know anything about texturing, and you know more than me about modeling.
I'm thinking that I would lengthen, and make more slender, the arms... Those starbust joints might be smaller... I think tubes and wires running along the arms would look good, and that's something you can probably have fun with! Remember, your best work will generally be done when you're enjoying yourself, so do what pleases Geoco.
You're the one who's building this, so fool around with some sketches and mess around with your model in a seperate file... Make its body fat with tiny arms... make its body tall with long spindly arms... Give it way too many arms, all with hooks at the ends... How's it going to see? Pile some electric eyes on there... Or one Huge eye... Maybe feelers... Allow yourself to try some combinations that you might otherwise be too timid to try... you might just stumble into something good.
Check your PM, I sent you my AIM (although I'm signed-on in a sporadic fashion).
REMEMBER: You can't fight your way out of a mental block, you've got to tickle your way out.
