at the cost of smooth preview.
unfortunately it just isn't worth it :(

here is my post from the wings forum.
-------------------------------------------------

is there a quick way to do something similar to smooth preview?
i dislike the extra steps in my workflow to get a preview.
i used the smooth preview feature CONSTANTLY in previous versions of wings.
now what i have to do is switch to object selection, smooth command, smooth shade
then i have to toggle smooth shade, undo, and go back to my desired selection mode.
this is a big step down from just shift tab, shift tab.
btw, most of my meshes are simply too big to be using smooth proxy.

Although smooth proxy - of 0.98.10a is an interesting change,
the field chosen during edit hides an object and and is not good.
No display of wire frame which around the smoothed edge
and
No display of smooth shaded a smoothed object is not good too.

At present, I think that old 'smooth preview' style is better than new 'smooth proxy' style.
- - - -
I want to edit an smoothing object on 'Smooth proxy' mode like the old style 'smooth preview' mode.

@yst: just open a new geometry window, hit shift-tab and you will always see how your model comes out, when modeling in the old geometry window ;)

How do you do that if shift-Tab has beer removed from this version? (Including the code that generated it, since Bjorng said it caused too much problems?) ;)

Are you sure you aren't using version 0.98.10 instead of 0.98.10a?

Best regards.

ernest - Shift tab doesn't do anything in 0.98.10a, that's what people are complaining about. Personally - I rather like the new system! - Baz

Oops cross posted there! Sorry :o(

Shift-tab isn't the smoothed preview anymore?

Anyways, yeah the 'open another viewport and put it on smoothed preview mode' is a good option and the one I also use.

0.98.10b is out now. :) Should please you all.

Bjorn's post:

Shift+Tab is back.

Enjoy!

- New command: View|Quick Smoothed Preview. By default bound to Shift+Tab.
Use it again to get back to workmode. The "W" key can be used to toggle
display of edges. What kind of edges that will be shown is chosen in
the preferences (described next).

- New command: Edit|Proxy Mode Preferences. Opacities can be customized
for the smoothed object in workmode. Also the kind of edge display
in non-workmode can be chosen.

- When using the proxy mode, the smoothed object is shown differently
depending on the mode (workmode/non-workmode).

- Added a face selection style preference to Edit|Preferences. Default is
"solid" (same as it always has been). The new "stippled" style shows selections
stippled, which allows you to see through the selection (useful especially
when working in proxy mode).

- Fixed broken Shift and Ctrl constraints in interactive commands.
(Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)

- Fixed a problem where a virtual mirror destroyed a random display list
(causing weird results, for instance the letter "S" disappearing everywhere).
(Problem reported by Jide.)

- New Tools|Snap Image Command plug-in by Dan G. Experimental.
