Title: Bone Drill
Name: Genevra
Country: USA
Software:

I made this piece for submission to the Association of Medical Illustrators annual salon. The bone drill is accurate to the # of teeth in the gears. I was primarily experimenting with lighting, texturing and rendering techniques, so comments on those areas are very welcome. I added the blood for dramatic effect, and to take full advantage of the reflective surface of the drill. All modeling lighting and rendering was done in 3D Studio Max and Mental Ray, grit and roughness were added in Photoshop.

Brutal and awesome, I just don't really like the absolutely clean handle ;) How did you make the blood?

nice work. I like the way you render blood also. The specular is a bit strange in comparison with metal reflection, so it may be my eyes. I look at this several times and it seems the direction of light is not the same.

thumb up ;)

David.

Thankyou thankyou! :) I agree with you about the handle, I want to go back and grime it up a bit. The blood is a painted material applied to a white ground. I used a simple splatter brush in Photoshop (there are a ton of excellent free PS brush sets available on the web), and amped up the realism with color variation and hilights.

OOOoooo, Da Vee, NICE one!! I think you got me!! You're talking about the direction of light on blood vs. bone drill, yes?? I might need to take annother look at that. I think what's causing the problem is the fact that I used a skylight (very diffuse) to get those soft shaddows on the drill, and the white hilights in the chrome are reflections from two self-illuminated boxes, not a propper light source. So of course it looks wierd!! Good call, man. Thanks so much for your comment.
