View Full Version : how do you delete things?
Chirone 08-13-2008, 05:52 AM natrually i go to delete things by pushing the delete button on the keyboard
but this seems to only work fo some things
there are things that i've imported into a scene and i decide i dont want them so i have to make a new scene just to get rid of it. i go to the explorer (and even the schematic) windows and select the things and hit delete.
the console line says "DeleteObj<name-of-object>" but it doesn't vanish from the explorer
this is quite puzzling...
ok, i think i see something, anything in the explorer that has a label coloured green can't be deleted by the delete button... How do i delete these? are they some kind of template that can't be deleted?
oh and on the note of stupid questions....
how do i deselect things? i can't just click on empty space to deselct an object...
oh and one other stupid question....
how do i view the polycount?

Im not really sure what the problem is but, Try selecting the objects in the explorer with the midle mouse button then delete then.
how do i deselect things? i can't just click on empty space to deselct an object...
hit spacebar, then rect select on an empty space
how do i view the polycount?
here are a couple of ways:
select an object - press shift + enter - that will give you the info for the selected object
or
simply hit ctrl + enter - that will give you the scene info
or
go to the stats tab of the visibility options PPG and check the scene info so that it will display the information on that viewport.

If an object has children and you press Delete then it actually is deleted but replaced by a null with the same name to preserve the hierarchy. Now if you try to delete that it looks like nothing's happening because the null is being replaced by another null with the same name.
That's why you need to middle-click to branch-select the hierarchy from that object down and delete the whole thing.

The deselect thing can be a pain, but if your left clock on the word "transform" on the left hand side above the scale input boxes, then go down to "transform preferences" near the bottom and change the drop-down menu that reads "click outside the manipulator" to something like "select tool," then click off the selected object into blank space will clear your selection.
something else that is helpful is file --> preferences --> tools --> selection. Here you can check "click to deselect" which makes what I mentioned above work better and you can also check the "raycast in shaded mode" which is like "ignore backface" in 3ds max, so you dont select any polys, verts or edges behind the one that you are trying to select in shaded mode.
I love XSI a lot more than max, but some settings are just plain hard to get to and unintuitive, but by god it is so much more powerful!
Hope this helps some!

ah right, thanks for pointing out the preferences thing
i've never used max before (i'm a native Mayan) but the navigation takes a while to get used to... i keep wanting to use the scroll wheel to zoom because that's just what it should do :p
also keep wanting to select other verts/edges/polys while still in a particular transform tool but it doesn't do that... although pushing spacebar isn't a bad thing, but having the transform keys so close to it is kind of a pain on the fingers. No idea what the equivalent to raycast select is in maya though
but don't get me wrong, xsi is awesome, with the whole rendering inside viewports. That is REALLY useful

wow, just noticed I said click transform on the left side, but I meant on the right side.
Render region is very nice and in 7, from what I have seen, Softimage has cleaned up the render manager and put things that were in several different menus together in one menu area.

It's what it does in v7.

You know of sticky keys right?
Hold down the selection shortcut instead of tapping it, select what you need, and when you release you're back to your previous tool/transform. Unless you meant going back to object selection, in which case no, XSI works differently from maya in those regards (and given the pain in the arse maya's selections are I prefer it the way it is in XSI tbh).

Change layout or reconfigure shortcuts?
Some people are more sensitive than others to certain configurations, if it strains your fingers or wrists you should change the layout to your liking rather than get yourself a shovelful of RSI :p

still yet to get v7
and yeah, i know what you mean with selecting stuff in Maya
it's good that you can't accidentally select something you dont want to select in xsi, i think it will just take a while to get used to :)
