Including Re-Engineered Global Illumination, and the Highly Anticipated Projection Man Matte Painting System

http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/2400/02400_02401_1.jpg MAXON, August 12, 2008 - MAXON Computer, a leading developer of professional 3D modeling, painting, animation and rendering solutions, today unveiled CINEMA 4D Release 11 (R11), the next generation of its highly acclaimed 3D animation software suite. The super-charged release is packed with advanced capabilities that deliver dramatically improved ease of use and workflow, image quality and integration into any production pipeline. CINEMA 4D R11 highlights include a non-linear animation system, new global illumination render engine and dramatically improved render speed. Customers also benefit from the powerful Projection Man matte painting system, developed by MAXON for Sony Pictures Imageworks, support for the COLLADA™ file format and CineMan - a RenderMan-compliant tool that connects to Pixar's industry-leading rendering solution. Additionally, multiple improvements were made to MAXON's popular texture painting toolset BodyPaint 3D Release 4. All of these capabilities and more serve to underscore MAXON's ongoing and deep commitment to helping 3D digital artists further advance creativity and control.

"MAXON has spent the last 20 years developing some of the industry's most advanced 3D software technologies; continually raising the bar for 3D animation software excellence," said Harald Egel, CEO and co-founder, MAXON. "CINEMA 4D R11 is no exception. This release contains the next-generation features our customers worldwide have come to expect from MAXON."

Expanded integration options, new workflow tools and boosts in performance for both PC and Mac users sit at the heart of the new release. On average, rendering speeds are now more than twice as fast as the previous version. CINEMA 4D R11 also boasts an all-new Cocoa-based architecture supporting 64-bit processing under Mac OS X Leopard.

"We are pleased, that MAXON has created the CineMan connection to Pixar's RenderMan directly from within CINEMA 4D," said Chris Ford, Business Director - RenderMan at Pixar. "Now MAXON customers can benefit from Pixar's Academy Award-winning rendering technology, featured in Ratatouille, The Incredibles and many others."

"Our customers told us what they needed and we listened," said Paul Babb, president and CEO of the MAXON US office . "This exciting new version is as ideal for the novice as it is for the power user who wants to produce compelling imagery in today's fast-paced environments."

http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/2400/02400_02401_2.jpg (http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/2400/02400_02401_2_l.jpg) CINEMA 4D Release 11 Highlights:
The list of capabilities and enhancements that comprise the new CINEMA 4D R11 is extensive; with each element designed to provide ultimate control to enhance the professional 3D modeling, texturing, animating and rendering process:

- Non-Linear Animation
Move beyond the keyframe. Animation Layers and Motion Clips tools let users easily build, layer and loop discreet motions containing hundreds of keyframes in complex hierarchies.

- Completely New Global Illumination
Take advantage of the most current algorithms and computer hardware with the all new easy to use Global Illumination engine. This technology delivers heightened flexibility to achieve ultra-realistic results with a minimum of setup time, even for animations.

- BodyPaint 3D
New tools for painting rich, detailed textures onto a 3D model as well as an improved workflow are part of this major upgrade to the popular 3D painting application. The improvements facilitate even tighter integration into industry-standard painting pipelines with brush import, WACOM tablet support, PSD format enhancement and more.

- Improved Rendering Speeds
Tremendous optimizations in multithreading and CPU efficiency offer dramatically improved rendering speeds. Overall render quality has been greatly enhanced as well. New parameters make it possible to create even more realistic glass materials.

- Support for 64-bit on Mac OS X
CINEMA 4D R11 is the first comprehensive 3D package completely re-engineered to take full advantage of the Mac OS X 10.5 release. As a native 64-bit Cocoa application, CINEMA 4D can be used in 64-bit mode to utilize greater RAM resources so you can build and render more complex projects. All 64-bit processors are supported. Users can easily switch between 32-bit and 64-bit mode to suit their individual needs.

- Projection Man
Leverage the same powerful matte painting system originally developed by MAXON exclusively for Sony Pictures Imageworks and recently used to create such blockbuster features as Hancock, Speed Racer, Beowulf and Surf's Up. This formerly exclusive toolset enhances workflow and makes it easy to create and patch the mattes. Tight integration with Adobe Photoshop and MAXON BodyPaint 3D simplifies editing and manipulating extensive digital mattes and even fully immersive 3D environments.

- CineMan
Power users can easily render CINEMA 4D projects utilizing Pixar's RenderMan Pro Server, or other RenderMan-compliant engines including 3Delight (dna research) and AIR (SiTex Graphics) through support for the RIB format.

- COLLADA Support
R11 now supports COLLADA, an open standard XML-based format that facilitates the transfer of 3D assets between applications. Exchanging scenes with other 3D applications is now easier than ever for diverse Digital Content Creation (DCC) production pipelines.

- Customer Friendly
An online update mechanism ensures users always have access to the latest updates and enhancements. A new license server technology helps corporations, studios and schools maximize and manage their investment.

- Additional Features
CINEMA 4D R11 also boasts optimized render control settings, animation ghosting, a doodle tool and support for 3D Connexion devices (Mac and Windows). For a complete list and description of all the exceptional elements that comprise this new feature-rich version of CINEMA 4D, please visit the products pages (http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/new_e.html)

Wow, wow, WOW... Very, very excited about this.

CineMan... Collada... NLA.... new GI... faster rendering... 64 bit for the Mac guys.. and lots of little features like using Photoshop ABR files in Bodypaint and the "greasepencil" type functionality of Doodle... very, very cool. Kudos to Maxon. When's the demo coming and how much are upgrades? :)

Haven't watched that yet, but from the Maxon site:
CineMan translates the entire CINEMA 4D scene, including lights and materials to a RenderMan-complaint RIB file. CINEMA 4D shaders are immediately available in RenderMan, and RenderMan shaders can even be used within CINEMA 4D as long as a compatible render engine is selected.
Pretty impressive stuff.

I got to hand it to them.
I have made the change from 3dsmax to cinema4d R10.5 and I love the way things like bodypaint are integrated into the program. They also haven't let pricing get out of control like some of the other vendors and they have always been there to answer questions whenever I had them.

I can't wait for R11.

Another thing to point out is that from R11 on ther eis no differenciation between plattforms anymore. If you have a R11 license you can use it on Windows or OS X, just as you like it.
Customers with a service contract have the additonal option of using a second installation on a mobile system.

On OS X, if you switch to 64 bit mode, you are still able to use Quicktime (which is a 32 bit app only). We were able to circumvent this limitation of Quicktime so you now still have the full QT functionality from within CINEMA 4D 64 bit on OS X.
Also from R11 on you can embed audio in your renderings. This is especialy usefull for quick previews you need to check timing.

So, in essence, I can have C4D installed on both platforms, but only have one in use?

This is helpful, once I upgrade to a Mac Pro.

What is the US cost of the service contract? There was no mention of it on the Maxon page, and I tried calling Maxon directly, but I think they are busy...

The "MAXON Service Agreement" (MSA) is optionally available to MAXON customers. Participating customers are kept up-to-date with the newest releases of CINEMA 4D and/or BodyPaint. As soon as a new software version is available MSA participants will receive these automatically, allowing participants to immediately take advantage of all new features and advancements. The "MAXON Service Agreement" (MSA) is optionally available to MAXON customers. So, much like the XSI maintenance contract, the updates are included within the cost of the service agreement?

Whereas, without the service contract, you can download any fixes/updates using the Online-Updater, but would pay for point upgrades.

Still no Quicktime on Vista x64 I guess? Well, it´s not that important... ;)

Are there any improvements to the Network Renderer GUI? The site just speaks of general improvements to render settings. I was once on a project with a lot of renderjobs - and it was quite annyoing if you wanted to put a certain job to the top the list (clicking 50 times).

I was looking into Final Render or V-Ray, but with R11 i´ll probably stick to AR3 and maybe try RenderMan. Its really nice to see how Maxon has improved C4D over all those years (i think i started with a Demo of R5 or R6). Keep up the good work! :)

really amazing Update, thanks Maxon!!

What really interests me though, maybe Srek can answer this, is:

1. Is the performance of the editor better? When animating riggend characters in Cinema4D, the editor gets very slow... and makes animating of rigged objects quite uncomfortable.
Is that improved in R11?
Because if not, all the cool new animation features (which sound AWESOME) are only half as useful.

2. Are the Vista Open GL Bugs gone?

Thanks a lot,
Oliver

Because if not, all the cool new animation features (which sound AWESOME) are only half as useful.
The editor performance of rigs is mostly determined by the exact setup. I've seen complex but very fast ones as well as dreadfully slow ones with no special capabilities.
There was no fundamental change in how the editor or the expressions work that could make a slow rig go fast in R11.

2. Are the Vista Open GL Bugs gone?
All the Vista / CINEMA 4D OGL problems i know of are caused by drivers. Different drivers, different problems. We managed to get control over some of the nastier ones (preview rendering on OS X, tranparencies with ATI), but that was mostly by working around the bugs or simply disabeling the offending functionality (thankfully the later has finaly been adressed by ATI).

"When is the new SDK coming out, I want to try C.O.F.F.E.E. code to define parameter values!!!"

further to this question :
1) Is coffee to remain the main scripting language for C4D ?
2) Should we expect to gain access to the program's latest features (especially the animation ones) sooner or later via coffee?

Thanks, I'm wondering whether it's worth learning coffee, like maxscript, will it let me rip the program open ?

1) From MAXON yes for the moment, though I do know of one plugin dev currently writing a Python binding to the Cinema API and of course there is always XPresso for node based "coding" and an extremely strong C++ API for the hardcore tools developer.

2) Yes, though I can't say when the latest C++ API calls will be added to the COFFEE API by MAXON (though of course again a third party could do it easily enough).

Yes you can, you must set the HAIR post effect to Raytrace mode though to do so. Alternatively you can make it generate "real" geometry in the HAIR object just as you can in R10 which will also of course render with GI but will not be as optimized.

Hi all,

I havn't used Cinema for about 6 years, but the tool set these days looks very impressive. However, while this is cool if you want to make pretty pictures at home, the really important question is how it integrates into the pipeline at work. Cineman looks like a step in the right direction, so how's the scripting/API environment ? Are there different 'levels', ie scripting language (mel) vs C-API ? Is python support planned ? How difficult would it be to write custom tools for Cinema4D ? Can you access and modify openGL in the viewport ? Why is there no linux version ?

Just looking for a 'hands - on' report that lays out weaknesses and strengths and how it 'feels like' to do custom development on it...

would be interesting to hear some opinions !

Srek

how's the scripting/API environment ? Are there different 'levels', ie scripting language (mel) vs C-API ? Is python support planned ?
In order of complexity you have
Xpresso (plattform independent nodebased expression system)
COFFEE Scripts (plattform independent scripts that can be either created by recording action or edited directly. finished scripts can be docked in the interface just like any other CINEMA 4D function)
COFFEE Expressions (plattform independent Java like language for expressions)
COFFEE Plugins (plattform independent Java like language for plugins)
C++ API / SDK (plattform dependent but with a highly consistent SDK between plattforms)

The C++ API is very complete, in fact practicaly all modules of CINEMA 4D made by MAXON are based on the API and so is much of the core stuff.

A Python implementation is currently done by a plugin developer.

How difficult would it be to write custom tools for Cinema4D ?
Not very much. Xpresso and COFFEE are managable for by far the most users. If you have some C++ experience the CINEMA 4D API shouldn't be to difficult to get into, it is well documented and there is free support for it on www.plugincafe.com (http://www.plugincafe.com)

Can you access and modify openGL in the viewport ?
No idea, maybe check on this over at plugin cafe.

Why is there no linux version ?
A Linux version is only available to studios under special contract.

no its not. same slow editor performance when animating, i just tested the demo on my characters. its not the rigging or the expressions (c4d is handling that task pretty well), its the way c4d handles a "nurbed" mesh that is being deformed i.m.o.. i agree that this issue should be fixed first, nle-animation should be standard anyway these days.

nevertheless, respect for the maxon developers!

Seems to be a very bold release by Maxon and a great step in the right direction. I can see the PRMan support and Projection Man getting looked at in studios where Cinema4D was previously not even evaluated for use.

NLA Clips and Layers after watching the NLA Clip Mixing/Blending video (http://www.cineversity.com/tutorials/lesson.asp?tid=1336) on Cineversity. If you haven't seen the video check it out. I was very much loving the workflow in that video I can see a lot of animators coming over from some other packages to dig into that great non destructive workflow and t's very easy to use.

Bodypaint certainly has wide spread use everywhere all ready but I tell you
nothing could make me happier then the full support for photoshop brushes in it.

As simple as it may be the Doodle tool looks like it will get a lot of use from animators and those making visual notes when passing files back and forth. Deffinately handy. I know I'll certainly be using it regularly, my dry erase markers are going to get retired.

Hi just to add to what srek has already posted (I'm a MAXON developer who is also and was previously a plugin dev). I'd say that Cinema's public C++ API is one of it's strongest points, it's extremely deep, complete and modern, is fully extensible and is the same tool that we use to write the application and it's modules (so you get the same tools we get at MAXON to write with). It's a very complete environment/os which when adhered to makes it very easy to write cross platform code.

On top of this you get free dev support at plugincafe.com and we've just completed our first US Developer Kitchen, basically a meet of MAXON core developers and management with people developing tools for C4D, studios, plugin devs etc where we're able to take feedback and give direct technical support even going as far as helping write custom code with these developers for their tools and help them make sure their tools work with the new R11 platform.

Basically MAXON is very keen to help developers, TD's and studios get whatever it is they want out of our toolset and allow them to create pretty much any tool they need or could think of as easily as possible.

Is the build-in SSS effect working with Global Illumination? Doesn't show in my render when using GI.

Simply a mind blowing release, I really need to get some work done but can't stop playing around with the demo ;-)

Great Stuff Maxon!!

Same here. I have only managed about 5 hours work today (and that's pushing it) with clients waiting and a deadline tomorrow. I am hooked on the demo. The doodle tool, the new NLA tools and the renderer are soaking up all my time.

Thanks for your answers Maxon!

Any non - Maxon employees want to comment ?

Ah, one more question (i could try myself, but I'm a bit busy today), are cgfx shaders with passes supported in the viewport ? ie for shadows, DOF and lens distortions ?

Just wondering about the projection painting tools
Is there any info i could get about it at all.....Ive scoured the net but to no avail

Being an up and coming matte painter Im very interested in this new tool but dont really know what it does.

What is QMC sampling, in the GI options? How does it add/refine the render?

EDIT: oops, found it on Maxon's site... who'da thunk!

Best is to ask these question in the CINEMA 4D-specific subforum. There's a lot more visitors overthere that might be able to answer. There's only a few C4D-users that visit this thread.

I just purchased 10.5 last month, and I heard a rumor that if you bought 10.5 in July or later, you can get v11 for free. Could a MAXON rep confirm/deny this for me? Thanks!

Does this apply to BodyPaint R4 also?

Another thing to point out is that from R11 on ther eis no differenciation between plattforms anymore. If you have a R11 license you can use it on Windows or OS X, just as you like it.
Customers with a service contract have the additonal option of using a second installation on a mobile system.

This might depend on your specific situation. Best is to get in touch with the dealer / country distributor you bought it from.

Please check with your local MAXON office, the common grace period is one month prior to announcement of a new version. There are very few exceptions from this, but only your nearest MAXON office can give you a definite answer to the question.
