View Full Version : Pen sensitivity settings
aggie93 08-12-2008, 02:04 AM How do you set the pen sensitivity for Painter 9.5? Does it matter what pen you are using?

Hi,
To access the Brush Tracking Preferences:
Mac - Painter X > Preferences > Brush Tracking
Windows - Edit > Preferences > Brush Tracking
Below the Brush Tracking scratch pad, you'll see instructions. Read them and you'll understand how Brush Tracking can affect your brush strokes, sometimes quite drastically.
Get used to resetting your Brush Tracking frequently, and if you find a particular brush variant only works well with certain Brush Tracking settings, either write those settings down and save the notes or make a screen print of the Brush Tracking dialog box when those settings are in place, then save the screen print with an appropriately descriptive file name so you can refer to it later.
Cheers!

JinBrown - Thanks. I hope this helps alot. What is typical? Will this work with a Gateway Tablet PC pen and/or a Adesso Graphire Tablet Pen? That is all I have right now. I will get a Wacom when I can afford it.

Hi,
All I can say, not having used either of the two tablets you have, is:
They need to be pressure sensitive,
The levels of pressure sensitivity will have an affect,
The resolution of the tablet will have an an affect,
You'll need to have the brush variant set to Expression: Pressure to control one of the parameters, like Size, Opacity, Grain, etc.)
You'll need to test both tablets with various Brush Tracking settings, using the same brush variant, then compare the results which, if you alter the Brush Tracking settings enough, should show a difference in the brush strokes. (Try to use the same hand pressure when painting the test brush strokes as that will help you compare "apples with apples" so to speak).

Okay... another stupid question... What is a brush variant? Is it on the pen or software?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it's related to wacom tablets. This may be old news to some, but there is a new driver for Intuos, Intuos2 and 3 for Vista an XP os's. I was have issues with my tablet that seem to have cleared up with the new driver.... now back to our regularly scheduled program!

Painter's brushes are organized in the following hierarchy with each brush library containing one or more brush categories which contain one or more brush variants:
Brush Library
....Brush Category
......Brush Variant
In the default Painter IX Painter Brushes library there are 33 brush categories (i.e. Airbrushes, Chalk, Pens, Watercolor... etc.) and in each of the brush categories there are several brush variants, for a total of 789 brush variants in the default Painter IX Painter Brushes library.
Here's an example that I hope will make it clear. When the program is installed, the default Painter Brushes brush library is loaded. Assuming you haven't loaded another brush library:
In the Brush Selector (top right corner of the Painter IX screen), click the left icon to open the brush category list.
Choose the Pens brush category
Click the right icon to open the brush variant list.
Choose the Scratchboard Tool brush variant.
Now, when you paint, you'll be painting with the brush variant named Scratchboard Tool from the Pens brush category.
NOTE: I've corrected an error in my post #6 above so I've edited one of the bulleted items to say:
You'll need to have the brush variant set to Expression: Pressure to control one of the parameters, like Size, Opacity, Grain, etc.)
