Great reel man, I gotta say that I loved what you guys did on The Mist and also an excellent job on Nim's Island, your personal work is very cool as well. Do you have a website where we can see all your stuff?

Congratz on a great reel and good luck on future projects.

WOW,just can say awesome,congrates and *****. :D

was wondering if you could answer my questions about LIghting process if it's possible,can you say alittle basic Lighting speaking?i mean tell us about diffrent scenes for lighting ?, how much lighting in 3D spcae is close to lighting in Real world spcace ?which theory of physics , 3D lighting space is close to?and in your experince whcih renderer could give you the best setups?

thanks in advanced,
Ehsan.

Goodness gracious. Fantastic work, you have the power to get a job anywhere, basically. As far as reel goes, I don't know if its at all possible, but it would probably be good to see breakdowns of at least some of those shots, so we get an idea of exactly what's going on, though I still think it's pretty clear. Thats the only critique I can give, lighting itself looks fantastic.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

@Helgi. www.si-productions.com Thanks :)

@ Badgerow. I completely agree. Sadly it can be difficult to get breakdowns for shots due to obvious reasons. All the creatures on reel are fully CG except for the underwater shot with the fish getting grabbed. That is a live action bird. An excellent point nonetheless and I completely agree. Thanks again!

@ wamo. Most of my lighting setups start out with a low level final gather pass from an hdri and then I add directional lighting with regular maya lights. And of course lots of extra passes for comp to control things with. I use mental ray mainly for my renders but most renders are capable of getting you some good results. Hope that answers your questions.

in fact i allmost got my answers,but which of Renderman or Mental ray you prefer more,as you know that both are Programable and also great!and you didn't asnwer one of my questions , that is:how much lighting in 3D spcae is close to lighting in Real world spcace ?which theory of physics , 3D lighting space is close to?

Hi wamo. I haven't gotten to work with renderman in a production setting yet unfortunately but from what I know renderman requires a bit more setup and technical know how. However it has some great advatages in optimization and speed when it comes to rendering certain things like motion blur and GI. Also some of the shader stuff is pretty crazy cool. Mental ray is an excellent raytracer but also has some short comings. Particularly in the motion blur area. I think for a major studio with the man power renderman is the better choice. Where as a smaller studio without a good group of technical people to set up a major render pipe would be better off with mental ray. Just my opinion of course.

As far as physics go and real world compared to 3d I would have to say most renderers cheat it. To compute things with complete real world physics would take way too long to render. One renderer that uses real world physics is the maxwell render. It creates beautiful images but the rendertimes are way too long for film production work and a lot of times what a client wants look wise isn't actually physically correct. Personally I could care less if a render is physically accurate as long as I can make my renders look exactly the way I want them to. Control is more important that real world accuracy. :)

Thanks for all the info so far! I was curious, when you start doing your specific lighting setups after your HDRI pass, are you more of a spotlight lighter, or a directional light ligther, or do you use a huge combination of all the maya lights available?

Hi Badgerow. I tend to use spots more than most other types but I use points and directional lights as well depending on the situation. For any type of area light I use a maya spot with mental ray area light option turned on. :)
