I'm getting a job this summer and so i'll have a bit of money to buy my own computer. I won't be making much so I have to find a decent rig that's as cheap as possible.

800mhz-1.2 Gig
256 mb RAM
CD burner
moniter
Geforce 2

Will a system like that be possible with $450-$550?

You don't want to go below 2 GHz (or 2200+ in case of AMD), Geforce4 Ti 4200, 512 MB DDR, 60 GB harddrive.

If you are in the US look for deals at Dell or build your own machine from deals at misc. vendors. You do need a credit card though.

Here are some sites you want to check regulary to get a system on a budget:

I put together a pretty decent system that should satisfy all your needs atm, the only problem is the monitor - if you don't have enough cash for a good monitor you'd be better off buying some cheaper components instead

Asus A7N8x (decent onboard sound&lan) - 85
Athlon XP 2200+ - 65
2x256MB Brandname RAM - 30
Any GF Ti4200 64 MB - 90 / Any GF Ti4200 128 MB - 125 / ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128 MB - 185 / ATI Radeon 9500 - 120
DVD/CD-RW Combo - 90
ATX Midi-Case - 50
60GB HDD - 60
keyboard and mouse - 10 - 50 ;)

The choice of the graphics card depends on what your primarly want to do... if it's cg i would advise you to buy an nvidia card, you can go with the 64 MB version, but you won't be able to use high texture details in some recent games

if what you want is a gaming system, the 9500pro is a _really_ nice card, you may want to go with a radeon 9500 because of the price, but it's not all
that... i would go with a ti4200 because of it's cg capabilities then

it's hard to save any more cash beyond this, a cheaper gfx card won't be fast enough, a cheaper cpu won't save you much, there is no cheaper/better mobo, 256MB of memory don't cut it... you better be saving and get this system :D

lets just laugh at that as that processor u mention now goes for around $20-40 im making a rig thats at ur same price its £300 equavilant to (450 dollars) this being the bottom of ur budget im getting a

xp 2600
512mb ddr
new case
new mobo
new hard drive 80gb hard drive

if u all ready have a cdrom drive then thiers no need to get a new one if u can burn cds with it

i may get a new graphix card if i get more money this year or get processor up grade depends how much i work and earn
