Listening to the stream as I type. Max is taking a beating. Blizzard animatic presenter essentially said they switched to Maya/Renderman because Max was not capable enough for their animation/rendering pipeline.

Kick ass meshing (perfect looking quads or tri's).

Everything interacts with each other eg cloth.

Very complex effects no scripts.

Nice volume shading.

Inbuilt velocity turbulence eg fluid like movement extremely fast.

I jumped in the middle of the stream; who is that guy who keeps interrupting the presenters saying stuff like "Give us stereoscopic!" "Put on you glasses!" "Yeah, do that! Look at that!" "Get this over to Toxik/Lustre/Whatever now!"? That's pretty annoying, having some stereoscopic-obsessed "moderator" who's more worried about making the time queues than respecting his peers.

Maybe it just sounds worse from this end.

the demo's on max 2009 were from the very recent extension pack 001 relased about a eek or so back

shown>
poly rediuction modifier
particle flow box 1 extension
the now intergrated boomerlabs sound plugin

the 3dsmax release schedule is now out of sync with siggraph..being at 1st quarter of the year now.

well it was FREE and so much cheaper than flying out from the u.k over the pond and then the otherside of the usa...booking into a hotel and then a taxi to the conference centre...

so a big thank you to autodesk for giving is a live video stream.

nice one!

They will probably put it online later. In any case they will keep showing the new features over the next couple of days. Live streams will continue all week according to that website.

Hi, I just come from the User Group Meeting, I saw all the stereography or whatever that term is that the used about a 1000 times to make everybody think that you can`t live without it. Most of the show was centered around the integration of the various packages and how formats like exr, fbx, python scripts or whatever fascilitate the transition from one package to another.

The one thing that really got me excited was Mudbox. I became a "ZBrush is kind of weird but okay" type of guy the last couple of months, but what I saw there in the viewport of Mudbox is not comparable to ZBrush IMHO. Layered Texturing, Ambient Occlusion, DOF, Glossiness and Tone mapping in realtime!!! All I can say is wow!!! :applause:

The Maya presentation was about IPR enhancements, briefly mentioned render passes (+Toxik import), the pre-selection highlighting stuff ( which is nothing new for the subscription folks of course) and the whole nParticle stuff already mentioned in this thread ( interaction between various systems etc. ). I guess there are more things worth mentioning, but the big thing they focused on was the stereography and how you can create this type of footage in Maya. They introduced a new stereo camera and Maya is actually able to display this stuff in the viewport. We were wearing those 3D-glasses and saw this 3D stuff in realtime in the Maya viewport in stereography! The effect was nice, I don`t know if I wanted to work this way, but the movie industry really seems to push towards the 3D experience and they showed a lot of 3D footage, amongst other a 5 minute clip from Monsters V. Aliens.

There were rumours here on cgtalk that there were supposed to be some new python-based GUI revolution in Maya, but I didn`t see/hear anything of that. The UI looked the same as ever and the presenter didn`t use the viewcube but the good ol`hotbox :D

Cheers!

You might mean the port of platform from motif to qt, which isn't a fancy visual gui revolution, it's a change in backend/dev platform, one of the benefits of which is more visual consistancy between OS platforms, not to mention eventually getting out of a dated and obsoleted model (motif).
That's for 2010 apparently.

with live demo's your always going to get crashes on yet to be released software such as mudbox, maya and motion builder....toxic was solid too...nice app just abit too expensive for my pocket...i'll stick with my combustion 2.0 for a while longer!

Hum... many apps are crashing. Mudbox looks amazing (as in my head just exploded after i saw the guy model with full HDR image applied) but also very unstable, i hope they solve the quirks before they release it.

Why don't they have the projects in a pen or something, instead of 5 layers of folders, in multiple hardrives, it's just wierd...

When is Maya 2009 going to be available?

all of those apps are beta's except 3dsmax 2009...they've been created to work just for siggraph on many occasions...so they wILL be unstable and so are not representative of the stability of a released version.

I'm glad I'm not bothering with this, I really don't fancy staying glued to a screen which periodically blanks the stream.

If I wanted that, Big Brother's on the telly.

I think this is the first time where I've not really cared that Siggraph is on - I don't know if it's the anti-climax of not having a Max release combined with a general dissatisfaction with Autodesk over the past couple of years, or I'm just getting jaded in my old age.

I feel a bit like when I grew out of the excitement of the prospect of Christmas as a kid.
