and the card took a crap
what does this mean? if your card is defective it's certainly not because of the AGP bus
the specs of you card should say something like AGP 2x/4x/8x... no problems

Simply put, 8x cards work with no problems whatsoever in 4x boards. Its just like having 333mhz ram in a 266 board.
If you can explain "and the card took a crap" in a little more details we should be able to help you out.
But basically it was not because of the 8x -> 4x dealy

Well, after installing the card into my computer, Maya had horrible horrible performance.... after about 10 minutes of downloading drivers, i was just about to install the latest VIA 4in1's, but before i could, my computer rebooted, it got through the BIOS boot, and when it should have gone to the 'Loading Windows XP', it hung...
i rebooted manually, and my computer wouldn't even give me a POST beep...
after much switching cards and resetting the CMOS, i discovered it was my new 980XGL that was stopping it from booting..
so i'm guessing the card was just on its last breath, my friend just tested it in his computer and verified its death

Damn, how old was the card. It seems weird that it just upped an died on you.
I would suspect the VIA crap before I would assume it was the 980.

CgFX:
He tried it in his friends computer, so i would think that it would be the card. Even if his friend had a via based mobo, it would be crazy if the 980 didnt work on via based mobo's.

MaD,
I just bought the same card and have it installed on a Dual Xeon board by Supermicro (P4DC6+) no problems as of yet with it being on the 4x AGP slot

I have never had a problems with a VIA rig I built yet.
Yep, my friend tested it on his NForce2 board, its toast
When in doubt, swap it out.
Pc anomalies exit. Iv'e had boards that wouldn't work in one metal case but worked in another. Weird stuff. Pci cards that only worked in on particular slot. Weird. CPU's are the worst at times. Star Trek type scenarios. But that's how we learn to make things work don't we?

I once had a problem. NT4 just kept crashing at startup. Replaced the mouse with another one and everything went fine

No problems running this card on a:
VIA KT266a chipset board
AGP 4x
generic drivers from NVIDIA website

I've seen lots of motherboard caps go out recently, have you tried your old card in the board? If not, take a close look at the mobo first and if the old card still works then take a close look at the Quadro to see if maybe one of it's caps has lost it's magic smoke
