View Full Version : Character: Simply Gorgeous
Rivendale 05-31-2003, 11:48 PM Hey!
Here's a lil fella I've been working on, I call him Simply. I'm going to do some animations with him or maybe a little short story, where he will get into all sorts of trouble. You can't see it so well in this image, but his whole body is hollow except the arms and the legs. I used MAX5 for modelling and Brazil for rendering.
What do you think?

I love him!! He really looks like a simple little fella too, a bit slow but cute
But, maybe I'm missing the point, but WHY is he hollow? Lighting effects or something?

Thanks a lot!
PvtRyan- why hollow? some of it has to do with lighting effects, because he has sub-surface scattering on him. He has an omni-light inside his head, so that the the head surface will absorb more light. Also I might use the hollowness for some purpose later, but I havn't figured out for what yet. Maybe he has a small village at the bottom of his stomach? ;)

Looks great, the dimples add alot to the cuteness factor. The skin almost looks like the felt on a muppet.

Thanks for the comments!
Scottosh- I had to restrain myself from putting in more detail, because I wanted him as simple as possible, almost like a pencil scetch. What kind of details are you missing?
PaxtonGerrish- Yeah, that's the kind of renderings I like to do most. The veins are a cool idea, I'll see if I can make something of that. I havn't seen finding Nemo, it hasn't opened in Sweden yet, but from what I've seen the fishes surfaces are really cool.

Very nice. I would really like an animation. I think it would very easy to come up with a story board for a short with these guys reeking havoc. :)

they look like they are made from supersculpey
was that intentional?
i want one

what was the modelling technique?

i wouldnt add veins and bones.....it would detract from their simplicity and cuteness
id play on the fact that they are that simple
change the hue to a more orangy brown and come up with a plot about how
at night....when you are sleeping.....the earwax men come out to play
make them a bit darker and they could be the greasy brown bum shellac, mooky residue people
in fact
you could have a whole race of bodily excretion creatures
like the Mr Men
they all have specific traits
hell....**** that......im having that idea COPYRIGHT.

very cute Rivendale
i dig the character design and the name:thumbsup:
and could you play more with the sss, i think it'll be cool if you can make his body feels like a .. okay forget the name in english but its a crawling thing on your wall eating mosquitos..that thing's body. you know very soft, watery inside as if it got no bones. well you know what i mean :insane:
looking forward for the anim

"its a crawling thing on your wall eating mosquitos..that thing's body."
what the hell is that?!
more importantly.....where are you from....i dont want to accidently go there
i have this vision of an eighteen stone mental patient clinging onto the wall in a nappy, catching insects......tell me you were describing some kind of small lizard...

This is really nice, great work. You said you made it in Max 5, could you tell me how you achieved the translucency, almost jello effect for the skin. How the light glows through parts of the arm and head.
Its an amazing effect, could you explain plz

its not that im sick.....
its just life's path is not a straight line...so you gotta be a bit twisted to get through it

"its a crawling thing on your wall eating mosquitos..that thing's body."
victor throe- ehrm, I have no idea what you're talking about there, but it sounds cool.
The modeling technique was drawing splines over a concept scetch from the side and front, connecting the dots, and adding a surface modifier. Then collapsing to Editable poly and doing a lot of tweaking. The arms and legs were extruded and the hands were built seperatly. Here is the concept:
http://members.chello.se/mille0/concept.jpg
Seven- The translucency is also known as Sub-surface scattering and is a feature in the Brazil renderer among others. It makes the light scatter within the model as if though it had real volume. The model also has a slight falloff map in the diffuse slot to enhance the effect.
Thanks for the replies and ideas!

really great characters there, i love their smiles. They really do look like they'll be fun to animate, great job. Oh, raden, are you talking about geckos? because the skin and the color and its translucency totally look like the geckos in hawaii, those things are creepy.

@tubby
i'm not sure it's gecko tubby, we called it cicak. it's different with other lizzard because it doesnt have the lizzard's skin, its very very soft. it once hop onto the back of my neck, crawling down to my nipple that freaked me out so much i accindently crushed it stomach when i tried to remove it from my nip. man all of these juice...still remember it :argh:
@ Rivendale
yeah cool sss. now cmon go animate!

hahaha. I really like how much expressiveness they have for such simple designs, nice goofy balance, and the sss is definitely a good touch, I like them kind of waxy-hollow like that.
The second one with the burning head is hilarious, too. Love the smoke. :D Though I'm not sure where the shadow on the right side of his cheek/chin/thing would come from?

Haha oh man these little dudes are great, i can allready invision how they would get around. The sss is a nice touch, i agree with Hypercube, the shadow on the right side of his jaw looks a bit odd. Do you have a history for them? a story line of what they are? why they are small? where they live, and all that jazz? or are they just little men who popped into ur head one day? Either way i like them.

Thank you for the replies!
Seems like you people wants to see an animation. I'm looking forward to animating this, but first I need to come up with a good story to give me some motivation to do something good with it. If anybody feels like writing a short script for this I'd be glad to take a look!:)
hypercube- I think the shadow comes from a light that maybe shouldn't cast any shadow. I didn't think it looked too out of place though, adds a bit of contrast, so I kept it.
Dustin_Senos- I don't have any solid story on him/them right now, but they live in the real world, although in their own world if you know what I mean. Maybe they live like rats; in the walls, maybe they don't. They are small because they they don't grow higher than one and a half matchbox.;)
