im having a problem with seperating my caustic effects from my scene.
im using maya 2008.

basically i did a search and it said just to turn of the light intensity so you only render out caustic effects, but when i do that I only see black

please take a look at the 1st render

but when i render out with everything, lights on, and everything else. i get alot more caustic effects showing. (2nd render)

am i doing something wrong here. please help me out.
all that i found was to turn of the light intensity to 0 and just have the photon emitter on.

Are GI photons and FG turned off?

no there on, but the thing is i want clear water, but all i get is the water that shows the background. im having problems making sure the water is clear so when i place is on top off an image, it shows thru

What material are you using for the water? I know when you use the mia_material and check "propagate alpha" it works well.

As for the caustics, could be linked to whatever material you are using.

It's hard to tell from what you posted which part is caustics. I see highlights and things on the water. If you compare a pair of renderings, one with caustics on, one with caustics off, then you will see exactly what the caustics are doing.

Turning down the intensity of the light (and turning off FG and GI) is a great way to isolate the caustics. You could also use a Global Illum pass as an option on the render layer, and leave your lights unmodified.
