The Apprentice Challange Judges
[May 30, 2003] Side Effects Software is pleased to announce the panel of judges selected for The Houdini Apprentice Challenge. Co-sponsored by Hewlett Packard and ATI Technologies, the Houdini Apprentice Challenge aims to uncover new animation talent for leading studios that use Houdini solutions within their visual effects pipelines.
To judge the entries, an array of animation and effects industry specialists have been gathered as judges. They include the following:
- David Allen, PDI/Dreamworks
- Tom Capizzi, Technical Director, Rhythm & Hues
- Rick Glumack, Visual Effects Developer, PDI/Dreamworks
- Sean Lewkiw, Sr. Technical Director, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop
- Kevin Mack, Visual Effects Supervisor, Sony Pictures Imageworks
- John Mariella, Co-Founder & VP, C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures
- David Prescott, CG Supervisor, Digital Domain,
- Nordin Rahhali, Effects Artist, Framestore-CFC
- Rita Street, Publisher & Editorial Director, Animation Magazine
Together this panel represents the talent behind visual effects for films such as "Blade 2," "Day After Tomorrow," "Dr. Dolittle," "Daredevil," "Fifth Element," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Shrek 2," "Thunderbirds," "Time Machine," "Titanic," "What Dreams May Come," "X-Men," and "X2-X-Men United."
With submissions due at 5:00 PM June 16, 2003, 3D artists from around the world are putting the finishing touches on their work. A best entry in each category, as well as a best entry overall, will be chosen to win a range of prizes including an HP XW4000 workstation, ATI Fire GL X1 cards and Houdini commercial licenses. Top entries will also be promoted throughout the industry, and shared with top effects industry employers.
All awards will be announced at the Houdini Annual Meeting during SIGGRAPH, July 27th, 2003 in San Diego, CA. Be sure to attend the Houdini Meeting to receive the latest version of Houdini Apprentice and to see the winning entries.
