hi!

is there any way (a mel or whatever) to make soft selections in maya a la 3dsmax?

i know theres the proportional transform thingie, but it only works for NURBS. i need this tool for polygonal surfaces and the sculpt tool just doesnt do the job in a handy way.

i know theres a way to "hack" mayas "engine" so that you can allow this procedure for polygons too, but i havent succeeded yet. anyone who has?

xysoftpeak

worked with maya 4.5

If the "proportional transfrom thingie" you speak of is what I think it is, it is absolutely NOT for NURBS only. I can't remember the EXACT location of it, or the exact name, but I think it's under modify/transformation tools/proportional modification tool...

It has transform, scale, and rotation, and I use it on polys all the time. You just have to set the falloff size to be large enough.

hmm... ive tried it on polys with different sets of fall off, but it doesnt seem to work for me. i guess i have to explore it a bit deeper to get it

thanks for the other links too doods...

Proportional Modificator Tool doesn't seems to work here too, Iam trying but I don't see the falloff on viewport and couldn't see the results on it

nobody knows how to use it? :surprised

Yep...

Actually, now I have confirmed, I got the name/location right. The "falloff" I spoke of is actually called "Distance Cutoff", which basically means the same thing. You access distance cutoff by double-clicking the tool in the toolbar.

Once you have set the distance cutoff, etc., you can change the pivot point of your selection. Keep in mind, you have to select all of the CVs you want to move. It will move them all proportionally based on distance of the CV from the pivot point of the selection.

Butt even if it works, it isn't the same. Because in Max you can do operations on this soft-selection like. And in maya you are only able to deform the selection.

Like if i want to apply a bend deformer that take the soft-selection in acount. Or Create a cluster that holds the soft-selection.

Or have one of you found a way to do this in Maya too?

You can set weights for just about everything deformer-wise and otherwise in Maya in the component editor.

I do know that, butt in Max it is much quicker and easier to accomplish. Just select a vertex set the fallof distance and type and you are ready in les then 5 seconds.

do a search for Tweak for Maya in this forum....but forget trying to do the same workflow from one app into another. You really have to learn to do it the way the app allows you to.....its just a reality of different appz. Despite having 3d in common....its litterally a different language for the same thing.

Also Geometry Transmogrifier does what you talk about

I've seen the 3dsmax to Maya doc from Alias Wavefront and Proportional Modificator Tool would be similar to Soft Selection, but the Maya doc's doesn't has any image illustrating the process, I got it but only for NURBS, I don't see the fall off on viewport, and don't see results for polygonal object, I agree galactor and 2byts

2byts, Geometry Transmogrifier? I've searched google but couldn't find anything about it, it's a MEL? plugin? work in 5.0?

its in the Bonus Game scripts from the aw website....also, the proportional tool only works on verts it seems and it if you keep the setting on linear or power it should work fine.

and thanks all of you. i finally got some feedback on this issue. now ill solve it :)

2byts, I can't see the falloff here, Iam doing something wrong?

Falloff=Cufoff

lower your settings m8....u have it on maximum effect

choose the option "Power"

Proportional modification tool will only affect the select verts. so select ur vert....then hit > to grow the selection....then use the tool.

download the bonus games for the Geo Transmogri thingy for more functionality.

try these settings:

Power

Cutoff: 1.0
Degree: 1.6666

Based on: XYZ

i think the only differance between this tool and LW or Max version is that you have to select the verts u want to change......a bit lazy of AW i think.

thanks very much, this tool isn't good as Max's softselection but using the clay dough together it can produces good results :)

thanks :buttrock:

Hi all I came across this, looking for soft select components, coming from a max bakground. I read the thread, find the documentation about geometry tramsmogrifier in the BGP, which definately looks promising but couldn't find it in the bonus package, what is the plugin or script name ?? do you necessarily have to indtall the whole she-bang, cause I don't want to (I installed drawsplit tool at ease).
Where is it hidden 2byts ??

forget soft selections a la 3dsmax take a look at BPT the best soft selection you can get

Nan, BPT seem great, but it doesn't seem like you can scale your selection does it ??
No, the geometry transmogrifier looks promissing, but I acn't find it in the package ??

look at this thread

thereīre some movies thats show how it works

geometry transmogrifier i dont use it was in the level tools or iam wrong :)

BPT is not so good and easy to use as Maxīs softselection.. existing rumor tells Maya 6 will come with sofselection, I hope it includes edge distange parameter...

wow are u serious russo? I've used max before and i like BPT soft selection a lot better. Just my personal opinion.

Russo

heh yes,.. serious.. In my opinion the multi-color faloff is a bit better , and seems to be much more integrated with engine than BPT is in Maya, but,.. itīs only the first version.. letīs see..
