View Full Version : J.C.V.D. (WIP & image heavy)

Dah...this is my first WIP posting and it isn't even really a WIP. Below you'll see where I am now with this piece. In my reply you will find my step-by-step. Why am I posting a step-by-step? Because I'm too much of a chicken to post an actual WIP. :) No seriously, what I'd really like - besides from comments on the last step which is far from perfect - is some critique on my workflow.
Please be aware that the notes I scribbled on the steps aren't meant as a tutorial. They're meant to remind my idiotic brain of some basic color facts that I can't seem to grasp naturally. I don't like color. I just don't 'see' it. But hell, I'm trying. :)
P.S. I am allowed to link to an external image right? My file is too big for an attachment. If not, I'm profoundly sorry and please send this thread to purgatory.

first of all great work. The lips and the eyes are very detailed, that something whats amaze me everytime again.
But there are two points which may need some corrections.
I know that this work is still in progress, but the right arm on the bottom seems to need also some work. While the skin on left arm looks "warm" and healthy the skin on the right arm looks ill or nearly dead. Not sure if this is supposed to be so.
The other point are his shoulders. I was the whole time not sure why they are looking for me so strange and I may found out what it could it be.
The right shoulder looks like someone has cut it out along the outline and that seems for me not to be natural.
The (creases?) should also build up this "small hills" like on the left shoulder. I hope you understand what I try to say. ;)
At least this is only my opinion.
Can I ask you about the pixel-size of your image? How big is it?

Great work! The only thing I would point out is the sharpness of the face area in relation to the hair which is fuzzy and not detailed. So somehow it doesn't fit to the style of the face but since this is a wip you might not be finished with this area yet.
For your question about the workflow: I think the workflow of each artist is a little different but also quite similar. As long as you feel good with your workflow it's okay. Workflow is something that comes naturally - you'll find the right way anyway.
Some artist start in greytones and color it afterwards - I tried this workflow and didn't feel comfortable with it - so even if someone told me "Hey this is a good workflow to go for" it didn't help me to progress on my own work.
well, this is my opinion so far...
