I am a newbie to Maya, and currently trying my best to make my first AVI demo. However, when I export direcly into an AVI file (just a 6 second clip), it lags sometime when played by Windows Media Player, and the file is extremely BIG. (25mb for a 6 seocnd clip)

Can any expert here please take sometime and teach me the proper way of making your AVI video. I heard that you can render out a series of images, then combine them into a video file by using some external application. If so, can you please direct me to the right program? Thank you very much in advance, I will check back here all the time!

Hey Kaorur,

Maya's .avi are either compressed at a very low level or not at all. The easiest way to do it is to adjust your render globals to export sequential image files.

Export them as .tif or .tga files (which are large but keep the full fidelity of the image) and always make sure you change the format to image.####.tga (not default).

Set the frame padding to 4 which gives you a number like 0001 (always better for future use).

Adjust your start and end frames to the timeline and there you go. When you batch render or command line render, it will give you a series of sequantially numbered frames.

Put them back together in After Effects or Premiere or some other package and compress your .avi there. That also give you a ton of control over the output compression and quality.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck.

Thank you VERY much, I haven't reach that level yet but it will surely help me alot in the near future. I am currently learning Maya myself, which is way tougher than what I expected...however I did manage to build some different models and make then walk or wonder around a bit...still not confident enough to show you guys my work though...but once I am ready, I will indeed. I will frequently comeback here and watch all of your wonderful works...it sometimes make me lose a bit confidence, but it increases my desire to reach you guys' level more!!
