View Full Version : HMC #16: Bishop
waterlilly 08-06-2008, 07:02 PM I've decided to take a stab at Bishop, the android from Aliens. To make it interesting, I will be modeling him as he appeared when he was ripped in half by the Alien Queen. This will be my first modeling challenge, wish me luck!

Thanks Olivia, good luck with your model as well :D
I started blocking things in today, hope to have the hands done tomorrow.

Thanks Tim!
Instead of making some hands I decided to start the face. Its far from finished, (still in the "blocking-in" phase of things), but its coming along nicely.

Good start so far, interested to see how this turns out, I loved this scene!

Sadly I had to drop out of this challange long ago because I had a truckload of work dumped on me. So even though the challenge has passed I started working on this again for practice. Here's an update, let me know what u think!

Barrab: While a break from politicaly correctness can be refreshing from time to time, I was hoping for some constructive crit for this WIP.

I think the profile is a pretty good likeness of bishop. I would recognize who it was without being told.
It's funny you are revisiting this entry. Locusta finished his alien queen and I'm planning on finishing my predator in the near future. Stan Winston's legacy brings it out I guess. Good luck, I hope you finish him.

Thanks Wyatt. All of Stan Winston's work is really fun to model, and a challenge as well. That's probably why we're all coming back to these unfinished models. Pretty & plastic creatures are a tad boring- but teeth, talons, wrinkles and gooey entrails make it interesting :)
Here's some recent work, I'm testing out some of the displacement maps for the jumpsuit and face.

Displacement maps seem to be importing OK, but that damn arm isn't deforming right. Gotta tweak it a bit.

Hey, nice that you continue the Bishop. Great work and a very good likeness. Please bring this "better half" ;) of Lance Henriksen to the end. Thumbs up!

Thanks Locusta!
Here's today's update. I'm messing around with the entrails.

Grrr, this project is starting to get annoying!
I think I'm having workflow problems, is it better to detail in ZBrush after you've "posed" the base mesh? Or is it realistic to do it before and hope everything deforms properly for the pose. I suspect the latter isn't working out for me, the hands/arms look all messed up and bloated. Not to mention I'm having issues with the seams.
I was hoping to get this done so I could move on to the next challenge, but I feel a bit stuck.

Thank you Roberto, this crap was seriously getting on my nerves.
Don't let it distract you Waterlilly, I am enjoying your progress so far. I've tried both methods so far. Sculpting with a posed and unposed character. I haven't decided which way is best yet but I'm getting better results on average posing first and sculpting after.

Thanks Wyatt :) I'm hoping to wrap this up soon so I can work on the current challenge.
I imported the posed geometry into Zbrush and re-used the displacements. After tweaking them a bit I'm much happier with the results- although this test render angle isn't the best one to view the changes from. I'm definately going to be posing first from now on. Just need to fix a minor seam or two, then work on the beauty render lighting and shader setup. Update below:

Well, I think this project has gone as far as I can take it (without going insane :)). Quite a learning experience too! Below is my final render, I hope you like the way my first HMC project turned out- better late than never!

Thankies, and fixed! I had a major brainfart (sleep deprivation), thanks for pointing that out or I'd never realized.:wise:
vishsm-
Thanks! I'm using mental ray, the lighting setup is very simple (just one spot light). The shaders use AO and cavity maps on top of the bump and displacement. If you need more info feel free to PM me or ask here and I'll post more details on the setup.

one real critique by the way, you should add a pool of.. umm.. blood or acid around his body, bring out the composition a bit more?

Yeppers, I agree with ya there. I have some white blood spatter and streaks that I haven't added yet (still needs tweaking) and I may put that in later. I'm eager to start the next HMC, plus I think I need a break from this model. I've been having strange dreams involving displacement maps and evil computers trying to bite me.;)
