Well, I've got to call this done as it is. I've got another project for school to do and if I don't end this I never will... This challenge was a great experience for me, to make my sixth model ever and get good reviews is great =]. Good luck everyone, and thanks to everyone!

Indeed. Coming right along.

- The cut in details on the covers over the legs look really nice. Right under the the upper most detail (the trapezoid shape) there is a crease which keeps catching my eye. You may want to reduce the number of edges crossing that gap to get rid of that.

- The hand parts are looking great too. I'm looking forward to see what you do with the linkages which control the fingers - and how they connect to the wrist area. I just did a quick search for 'Terminator Arm' and was surprised to see how little came up detailing that area.

- With all of those beautiful tight bevel's in its high-res form, I can only imagine what kind of poly-count you are starting to deal with already!

Keep it up! This is exciting!

TimCallaway
08-08-2008, 10:52 PM
Yea the crease is bugging me too, I'm sure when I got most of it done I'll have a nice week of clean up to do. And already over a mil! I love it

I have all the linkages done on there, just a bad view to show them. Once finished I'll have a lot of detail renders =]

Thanks for the support everyone =]

Here are some ref images I used when trying to build a T800 a few years ago. I was pretty new so the model sucked, but these refs are great and took some real searching to track down.

All you're really missing is more struts coming from the underside of the wrist to the underside of the knuckles and maybe some wiring to throw in detail and make the lack of mechanical believability less visible.

I was trying to model a T800 a few years ago, I was new so the model sucked, but these sources are the most detailed I could find of the hands.

Hope they help.

Wow man, you made my day with that clip! It's kinda hard to find really good reference for him. The hoses on the head are on some pictures and not there on others. There is a little piston for turning the head side to side on all of them. I don't know if I should include those or not. I need to watch the beginning of T2 to make sure. Thanks alot for the comment and that clip =]

Those renders look great but they don't make it easy to see if anything is wrong with the model, put a specular but none reflective material on the model (well that's what I would do) then it will make life alot easier. Wont look as pretty but u can save the pretty for later :)

Tasp
08-16-2008, 06:02 AM
Hey Tim, your progress is amazing! The face does still look a little off, from what I'm seeing in McGreed's pics in this thread there are a few details that seem to be making it just a little out of whack.

The eye sockets are a little too big I think, they should be a little narrower and the brow should be a little less sharp in it's rise from the mid point between the eyes. The expression on the terminator reference is almost slightly sad, your terminator looks like he's about to f' you up. While that's pretty spooky it might be what's throwing it off slightly. Also one more little thing that I'd love to see is the cpu access on the head's right side. You know, the part they open when the reprogram the Terminator in T2 so he can learn.

But mostly, this is looking so cool! Just add some glowy eyes and it will look awesome!

TimCallaway
08-16-2008, 07:42 AM
You know, the part they open when the reprogram the Terminator in T2 so he can learn.

I honestly don't recall this part of the movie... You're sure this was T2? I've just watched this like 30 times since I started this model lol. If there is that part I'd like to add that to my work =]

But the texture needs some correction, as it is disturbing the look of the head shape, too much big reflection is the cause I think.

Hey Tim. Looking great so far!

Could you post some closer renders of just the chest piece and head pieces (just the skull shell parts).?

All of the little parts look amazing - pistons, plates, details, fingers, toes, rods, eyes, bars, etc... Truly fantastic!

The key large parts (chest and head plates) have been hard to see in a few of the renders due to reflectivity and size. These will be the key areas to get right and I'd love to get a good close look at them again since the changes you have made.

Anyway, keep up the great work. This has been a fun thread to follow.

hey great man, glad they where helpful, stick with this model for sure, when i modelled mine my modelling skills improved a great deal, each part takes some planning and maybe a couple of attempts at modelling, gets a biit annoying but in the end its well worth it.

very nice man, are you dinging him up in zbrush or is he a shiny new terminator?

TimCallaway

Thanks MichaeleBJohnson =]

He'll be kinda dinged up, with some nice scratches. I want him to look at least a little worn for a terminator.

hey great work, modelling is nice, I dont want to sound negative here but theres 2 things that are bothering me:

1. the head looks a little too small
2. the legs look too big for the body

maybe its the angle of the shot, so I appologise if it is.

You know, I just got the same crit from my brother and my wife. So your right about the head, I'm debating on the legs still, I think it's the angle of the shot but I'm checking the overall scale of everything too. Thanks alot =]

ok heres a front n side view of mine (looks poor with no textures), also I have no pistons on the legs or traps so thats something to note, but hopefully these should give you a good starting point for proportions

edit: looking at your model again, I think once the head is bigger the legs may look right, its hard to tell at the minute but yeah I think its just his head.

Very cool. I think you need something in the scene to reflect off the metal to give a bit of added realism? What are you rendering the model with? Also, he looks like he's been left out in the rain too long, poor fella :). I prefer the shiny, new look myself personally. A perfect chrome like finish

TimCallaway
08-25-2008, 06:24 PM
This was a test on the texture so it might not be final

It will in the end be rendered with mentalray, with some nice HDR, I want the whole fire look =]

Looking great Tim. Most of my (silent) critiques have been addressed as you have worked forward.

The skull has gone through tons of great changes. If anything it may be a touch small on the shoulders, but it's hard to picture as my head would look small on my shoulders too if it were only a skull with no skin and muscle.

Texturing is looking great as well.

TimCallaway
08-26-2008, 04:31 AM
lol, you know people keep telling me that. I keep making it larger and it still looks small. I'm just gonna make one where it's so huge =]

Now you nailed it!! Proportion is well done now. Head is not too big. Anatomical accurate. Seems like about a 8 Head overall tall body. Perfect!

The latest renderings are stunning. Great HDR lightning and already very good balanced reflectivity of the chrom.

Great Terminator you got here. Keep it going until the end. Thumbs up!!

Excellent job. The material you've chosen looks a tad like jelly. The reflection off metal is sharp and high contrast, you got close but the blend in light and dark values have a smooth transition. Fix that and it'll really pop

TimCallaway
08-27-2008, 07:31 AM
Got the gun looking the way I want it to. Normal maps are not applied to anything on the model yet. It keeps crashing everytime I try at the moment. This is still basic materials with just a color map on the gun =]

Howdy Tim...

So, I can't help but just be blunt about this one. I feel that the gun is simply not working with the rest of the image. It looks like a plaything in the hands of a beautiful model. My eyes keep drifting towards it wishing it wasn't there.

Perhaps the gun should be revisited from the ground up with the same attention to detail the Terminator recieved. Most likely a flat(ish) black, non-reflective material will work wonders once the gun has more details.

Hey Tim, that's pretty awesome! It looks great!
I'm impressed!!!
I think, in my opinion the only thing that looks a little funky in the recent renders are the feet, aren't they too small?
maybe I'm just not looking at it right, or maybe its feet are small... but yeah just thought I'd share that with you!

Looks great tho!

MysticDread

Wow! That's quite a chenge.

Overall, it looks much better. The bottom jaw is awesome! Those newly made details are so much more crisp and accurate.

Pay special attention to the various gaps around the different metal panels. Specifically the gap between the eyes and the forehead area - right now it looks consistent yet maybe overlapping a little. The seam running arcoss the top of the head may need a tiny bit of adjusting as well - I can see the specular highlights and reflections bowing just slightly where they seam come together.
- Both of those areas are super close... just could use some minor adjustments.

Also, the teeth looked better in the old renders. The ones in the current renders look too simple, straight, and white.

Beautiful overhaul of the head!

They suspended my school web account. That's where I've been putting all my images at lol. I guess on those school accounts they give the students very little bandwidth. I don't know how long they suspended it for either, they can eat me.
