HCR MINI-Challenge #7: Stan Winston Tribute

THE HARDCORE MODELING MINI-CHALLENGE!
Stan Winston Tribute

Sculpt a creature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatures), a diorama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diorama), or creature series based on the wonderful creatures built by master monster maker Stan Winston.

Who is Stan Winston?
From wikipedia (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0366063/bio):

" an American visual effects supervisor, make-up artist, and film director. He was best known for his work in the Terminator series, the Jurassic Park series, Aliens, the Predator series, and Edward Scissorhands.[2][3][4] He won a total of four Academy Awards for his work.

For a complete filmography of all his outstand fx work
please check his IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0935644/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0935644/)

Because of his outstanding contributions to the visual effects field, and taking the world of practical FX to a whole new level, Stan Winston has been chosen as the vfx master we will tribute.

There are three ways to participate:

Single Creature:You can pick whatever creature you wish from the attached list at the end of this post.

Diorama: You may sculpt the creature inside the appropriate environment.
Some diorama examples:

Ripley (in powerloader) vs Queen Alien
Arnold vs the Predator
Iron man vs the Warmonger

Creature Series:This type of entry requires you will try to do as many creatures as you can from an individual film.

Bust :This type of entry requires you will try to a bust of your favorite creature, or a likeness of the master himself.
For example you may choose to sculpt as many of the creatures from the film Small Soldiers

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt one or more representations of Stan Winston creatures in 1 month 1/2 from his filmography. The idea of this "mini-challenge" is to simulate an impossible dateline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded/ rigged. But the model will have to be Stan's interpretation.

For example an entry might call for a QUEEN ALIEN, but the artist will have to sculpt a Stan's screen interpretation from the classic film ALIENS.

A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference for the film models. But at the end of the challenge the creature(s) have to look like the one shown on film.

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark....

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DATELINES.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH and a 1/2 to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don't win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Best WIP thread
Best Bust
Best Model Collection (2 or more)
Best Diorama
and the big one of course:

Best Model
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

Hell I would encourage people to do more of his off kilter work.

Oh, snap. I'd best get to deciding what to sculpt; this sounds like a fun one! I think I'll re-watch Galaxy Quest and see if there's anything in there I could try out..

Good call on the Cothoga by the way; The Relic is a great guilty-pleasure film :D

Let us not forget about Small Soldiers! Comeon, you could model it and then get it printed. Your very own small soldier to play with unless he just so happens to kick your ass.

I was wondering if Bishop from Aliens would be permissable, particularly from the scene where he gets ripped in half and his milky android guts are all over the floor.

Yes he is kosher (after all Stan broke him in half)

If I had the time to commit this month I would so be doing the Predator. And it would have to be the scene where he's just pinned Arnold's head to the ground with his wrist blades.

Good luck everyone!

I can't believe I'm not seriously considering doing the alien or Predator -- I've spent a good seven years now as the main site artist for Gamespy's Alien Vs. Predator site, so I'm pretty darn familiar with the two. Unfortunately I've tried both in 3d many times and never done justice to either; perhaps I've become a little gun-shy about 'em now.

OMG! Why couldn't this challenge have waited for some other time?!? I so wanted to do this! I would have loved to tackle a Predator or Alien Queen bust!

Oh well...I'll be watching.

And even though it would be great to have my own alien or terminator on my hdd... I am going for a bust of catwoman from batman returns... I so like that character

Already started to search the scrapheap for all the imagery I can find... shouldn't be too hard to find decent images...

Good luck to everybody!

For those of you that are competing in this challenge, and also for those of you that are not, you should go pick up The Winston Effect (http://www.thewinstoneffect.com/). It is an amazing book of all of Stan Winston's work with superior reference and great for all around inspiration. Cheers!

Roberto,

Is the challenge restricted to only Stan Winston's filmography or can we choose from his other creature sculptures as well?

I'm would like to try 'Nakuru' from Stan Winston's 'Realm of the Claw' as a 3D model.

The Realm of the Claw was conceived and the creatures designed by Stan Winston, however it never went into movie production, instead it was released as a series of 4 comics and a graphic novel. The 6 main characters were released as figures.

Image of Nakuru (http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj230/AUST_Tober/nakuru.jpg)

Ofcorse not many people would know who this character is so judging would be a bit tricky, but I wouldn't be in it for the win. I'm sure there will be plenty of Predators, Alien Queens, T100s and other far more recognisable creatures being made.

I would LOVE to join this and especially since my favorit movie of all times is Alien and Aliens...BUT... I got a problem. How do I know which elements in Aliens are made by Stan? Because things from Alien, created by Giger, is used in Aliens in a way.
So do we know which is which? Or is everything a go in the movie?

SinisterUrge
08-13-2008, 07:33 PM
The xenomorph is Giger's design and he worked on the original Alien. However, in the sequel Aliens Giger was not involved and the xenomorph design was modified and refined by Stan Winston. Meaning you can work on the Aliens version but not the original in Alien.

Out of curiosity- if we model a rough character from scratch (boxed out to general shape) can we then duplicate this particular one and add the needed details and what not to meet the needs of several characters or do we need to do each from scratch?

I dont see a problem with that...As long as the CORE elements of the models were done during the challenge, you may reuse them as many times as you want.

TITLE: T-rex Attack Scene

CATEGORY: Diorama

Ok, My work is finished. I've worked a lot on these days to complete my scene, because on september i'll have many university tests, and i won't be able to work on this project.

Some words about my work:
It represents, as many of you know, the first encounter of the T-rex at Jurassic Park. We are near the T-rex zone and the electrical power is off. The t-rex fence has no electricity and this prehistoric creature can freely attack the cars who are carring the visitors(Alan Grant,Lex and Tim,Gennaro,Malcolm).

I mainly tried to recreate the atmosphere and the look of the original scene.
I've taken about 3 weeks to complete the image. I've used Maya for most of the work,
Zbrush to sculpt and detail, and photoshop to make the specular, color and diffuse maps.
Here's a link to the wip:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=664201

I hope you'll like it.

This is the FINAL RENDER, i've done some post processing in photoshop to achieve this result.

except for some basic cylinders which was done in 3ds Max, pretty much everything else is in zbrush which i intended to. lastly photoshop was used to compose the final image only.

the biggest hurdle with this model is probably the poly count, which the total of all the parts combined is around 22 million polygon. i had countless crashes e.g when i do changes of subtools, dropping the model to the canvas for ortho renders itself had its share of crash

But all in all, it has been a great learning process. Thank you for everyone who has commented and helped me out during the making

Sincerely,
Andrew
