Hey guys.

I'm trying to work on a model which was originally made using polygon tools such as extrude face, edge, append polygon, etc.

The character's face was finished, then converted into subdivs.

From here, in polygon proxy mode, the base of the head was extruded down to create the rest of the body, and from the body a face was extruded to create the arm, etc....

But I'm faced with the problem.... the thing is so friggin slow that I can even create the second arm for the character. I have it in poly proxy mode, go to extrude the face, and like 30 seconds later, it will extrude, but I go to move it and then another 30 seconds it moves..... basically the thing is really 'not-workable'.

I'm posting here in desperation for find an answer or solution to this problem. I've tried going in and deleting the 'blind-data' nodes, and then putting the subdiv model and the polygon cage to different layers...and I suppose it helps a bit when moving vertices around with the poly layer.... but......most definitely not when extruding a face.

Does anyone know what to do?

Or... if there is no real solution to this problem.... then how else does anybody model a character for animation.... what other way wouldn't run into a problem like this?

Basically, it looks like to me that Maya subDs aren't really made for the workflow that you are using. Its more like, do a rough poly of the model (like an arm) and then convert it to subDs to do detail editing. Do this with all your parts and then attach them together using the subD attach function.

When I first started I was going about it like you are.... but now, I RARELY go back into polyproxy mode. I think you get more comfortable with experience.

So in your case, I would duplicate the object that you are working on, convert it back to polys (at the ZERO LEVEL! - important), extrude the arm roughly, delete everything but what you have extruded, convert it to subDs, and then reAttach to your original character.

I LOVE SUBDs... I am now at the rigging phase, and am using poly wrap deformers and the speed works very well for me.

Thank you very much for your reply.

It's really late where I am and Finding Nemo has made me exhausted... from laughing anyway........REALLLLY funny ( see it if you haven't already )

But, my point is I will most definitely try out your suggestions tomorrow and I'll let you know how it all turns out. But, again, I really appreciate it.

Have a great night/day.

See ya.

i might be way off topic here... but making a "delete all by type -> history" is allways resourceful if one wants to refresh a scene and start off by new, after saving the scene.
