Just saw your movie!
IT IS SO GREAT!!!
You have done a great job on this piece, I laughed so much about this puking freak!!!
How did you do the plastic around the 'Snack'? It looked very cool.

Puking freak, lol. Poor guy he has feelings you know, he can't help it if the devil gives him a manky sandwich!
Glad you liked it!
The plastic was really simple, just a texture map of the creases acting as a bump map on a material that was reflective... if that makes sense.

There's something about your character that doesn't appeal to me - it's a bit like a low poly game character or something and I just don't like to see them in short animations.
Also, I find the constant stop-start pacing of the film a bit irritating. I know it's the extreme sports style but I think if it was a little subtler, it might be a bit more pleasant to watch?
I've got tonnes of short animations on my hdd from graduates of Ringling to professional animators' spare time work. Basically I've watched lots of animation!
I know you don't want to hear this but I think 'like a snack out of hell' is one of the best short animations I have seen! I love its cinematography, posturing, attention to detail and all the artistic/cultural observations.
Is Monty Python a conscious inspiration for you?

Kewl thanks again for all the comments:
Ricky: cheers dude, not soppy at all I also appreciated all your inspiration during the year, without you as competition I would never have produced this.
Gingerhammer: That's cool, yeah I too felt a bit like it was rather stop starty but there was so much to model, texture animate and all done by myself that I just wanted to get into it. Ideally I would have liked waaay longer to adjust my story. Other people don't likethe low poly guy either so that's fair enough, I just wanted my computr to be able to cope!!:D
Yeah, why aren't I on the front page?? (head swell)

If you are running OS X, you can download MPlayer OSX. It plays pretty much every video codec, including the lastest divx files. Here is the site... click me (http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/)

That was sooo funny, well done to you! I often smile and chuckle at a funny animation, but this had me laughing out loud at the irreverant subject matter. Excellent stuff, and very well done. I think it flows well, and the little pauses work to balance and complement the more hectic bits.

Youre an Animator's Animator!!! Print to FILM!
This is the reason some adults still wake up Saturday morn'n for cartoons and cold bowl of milky cereal.
I can see the benefits of good planning and well thought out storyboards.
I like the backgrounds and compositions. Opening location pan shot is awesome.
Original and creative story...Gross as heck the way kids love it. My stomach is queazy now...so I can't imagine how you felt watching it over and over during editting LOL!!!
The actions is very Johnny Bravo....but HiPpeR ...Love the gestures.
Ok...this wouldn't be a critique if I don't say something critical but after watching three times I can only come up with "You're too good"
So, I'll just comment on personals stuff.
I don't like "Ren and Stimpy" because it's "Ecky" looking and this skirtted around the rim after the 3rd GURCH!!!
I really don't find vomiting, rank food, "555", Heaven or God funny subjects matter for laughs however, I couldn't help feeling very sympathetic for the character trying so hard to clean up his act or conceal his "sin" but but only making matters worst. Very true to life, right? There seems to be a background moral there.
Then when he meets his maker and MORE VOMIT...I tend to think he made it in inspite of how much a mess he is and that would make it a GOOD ENDING.
whoa...PROFILIC!!!

Holy crap what a response!! This has been on for ages and suddenly exploded overnight, there I was thinking I sucked as I got such a response when I posted Modernism but this just makes me full of happiness. Thanks everyone, this makes it all worth it. Sorry I haven't been around answering questions, I've been busy trying to make showreels and stuff. I'll try and answer as many as I can remember:
This animation was made in 3dsmax 5, all modelling, animation etc.
The clouds in heaven were a mix. The big ass ones were modelled in 3ds max, whereas the smaller ones in the distance were photoshop jobs.
I'm really glad everyone likes the humour so much, otherwise it would have fallen competely flat.
I go/went to Southampton Institute in the UK. I've been learning max for 2 years now, the last year was while I was making this film, so I was sought of learning on the job. God was that hard, big thanks to Adam Comiskey my tutor who really helped me loads.
Strangely enough this film didn't make me feel qeazy watching it over and over, I think I became hardened to it. Although recording the puke sounds at the begining was quite an ordeal.
I'm sorry about some people not being able to download it, I've been finding a it really hard to find space to upload it to, thanks to Vram my mate for hosting them. I was gonna upload it to www.pocketmovies.net and then link to there, but they seem to be out of business, DOH!!
My first animation, MODERNISM can still be downloaded from pocketmovies.net I think, if they haven't died completely. Hope people enjoy that one too.
Okay, phew. Anymore questions?:bounce:  :D :airguitar

pocketmovies is dead.....
have they dissapeared completely or have they popped up somewhere else under a new name
i worked on a puking scene a couple of years ago
(live action)
the actor could do this great impression of someone puking
he would do this almightly HHGUNNNNNMMEEUUGH!! sound but could insert little croaks and burps into it too
it was fukkingross
and each take was done with him holding half a can of vegetable soup in his throat
he was very talented
he would hold it all right back behind his tongue so that when he opened his mouth and burped there would be a delay before the soup would emerge
fantastic
my job was to add some cg chunks to beef it up a bit
if i find it ill post it

06-05-2003, 04:14 PM
guess ill get blasted for this but here goes..
Subject matter offended me (crowd mumbles)
Im a beleiver in God. Im not a fanatic nor am i religious (man made). Its simply my faith and my love.
I wont go into a rant why i believe because i dont need (nor do you) a huge philosophical thread.
I think your choice of matter and symbols (angels peeing.. guy says holy sh't right after seeing sweet jesus your in heaven, vomiting all over heaven and God vomiting on him)
Listen, i can take a joke.. I dont give my money to jerry fallwell and i dont drink poison and dance with snakes. I simply think in a wide world of mixed faiths and cultures you might have made a wiser choice of subject matter.
Point made, i think the animation was good. It was a little too pose to pose snappy for me. Technically not bad but you should try some straight ahead animation and see if you can do something a little more organic, youve got the talent. keep on keeping on and remember; the minute you think youve mastered character animation - youve been mastered!!

Changing the subject slightly... what was that glint in the distance when you are first introduced to the character? I assume he's a superhero type but there was no defining story to back that up - if he got run over while trying to rescue an old lady getting mugged or something, I think it would have enhanced the story.
other than that, a huge amount of work for the time it was done in, well done...

I'm all for FREE speech and with the last FCC laws, we are should really treasure what little we have left, but You should'nt toss Flipnap "criticism" off lightly, especially if your work is posted publicly.
There are inuendos in your animation that can be offensive by people of certain faiths. It bothered me too a bit.
Just be aware of it.
Heck, I'm not the former highly hailed Mayor of NYC, (Juliani) but believe me, If you pissed him off with some "artsy" religious dunged painted Mary, urinated crucifix, and vomiting on the Bible...get the point?
I greatly admire your talent but as I mentioned in my first post...I don't usually find that subject matter funny (ei. "555" or God).
The vulgarity is meant to be humorous as much like "Ren and Stimpy, Blood gushing south park, " type animation is, so I took it as such. Obviouly, Lavatory doors don't show anyone actually pee'n on the door, man, women, kid, and much less Angels.
You are obviously pushing buttons, so did Madonna, it made her famous. She crossed the line and taboos. Enter at your own risk, but don't be suprised or unaware when someone tells you..."That is not funny" to them, it could be sincerely hurtful. It doesn't make them less than you.
I took it as you were poking fun at the taboos. The bible is a book and paper.
But Burn an American flag and you will go to Jail.
However, there are tons of cartoons with wimpy angels on one shoulder and mischevious red devils whispering on the other. I consider it nonsense just as much as God having a big 20 feet, white foot.

Freak. There's tons of nightmarish "satanic looking" art on this board...and I'm sure some are very intentful to their cause...hahah. I consider the onus them.
As always with cartoons, my concerns are with impressionable children and misinterpetation...but heck, after Bart Simpson...who's going to protect us adults from them?
Lots of people just find burp'n disgusting... and some laugh. I judge not. (pun?)
Again, I had to sympathize with the poor fellow. He was decieved by a sandwich instead of an apple.

Eeek!:surprised
I just checked the posts today and was quite shocked. I'd just like to point out that I'm not trying to imply anything or question faith or anything.
When I went about making this I did not set out to offend or "push buttons". I personally don't see anything wrong with it, it's just a cartoon, but I appologise if I have offended anyone. I'm glad people like it, it really is just meant to be a comedy that just happens to be set in heaven.
I was gonna have the guy as a janitor before, puking on a nice clean floor as his boss arrived, but it lacked scale. So I just thought what would make it much scarier, why messing up God's shiny floor!
Again I appologise for offendeing anyone, and I will not be burning either Bibles or American Flags.
DIVx wise, I don't know what's up with the divX versions. If some nice person could give me some free webspace I could upload MPEG versions or DivX versions, whatever, I've no idea why they aren't working and the wmv one is??
