Here's my entry for the LOTR Challenge which I was never able to finish until now. Introducing the Thauras Gul, ancient elf hunter.

wow, very nice indeed. I like his pose the best. It doesn't look stiff or like a cut out like most poses end up looking. It looks like it's a still from a full animation. The texturing is really good. Only crit, is that the skin color looks a tad bit off. maybe too pink? but it's an elf, so who knows. Lighting looks supurb. The background looks a little dark, but it gives great contrast to the character so it works...

great work

Sweet dude. nice!! :buttrock: heres my 2 cents worth, left hand doesnt really look like his grip on the skull is strong and aggressive enough, looks like he's just holding it. Right leg would look better if it was sraightened more, feels like the char's weight is slightly more towards the left leg, it would be nice if the weight was more on the right. the orange light is a bit too strong for me, cant discern his skin colour anymore.

like the sword's look. goes with the overall feel. somehow his skin looks quite clean.

Personally, I think you overact with lighting... and all the effort you made on skin (except head and eyes) is now gone, it's all in darkness... :) If somebody wasn't reading WIP here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60258&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) it is, so you will see how Elf's Killer looks in the reality :)

Anyway, great modeling and texturing :) 5 stars from me.

I wish you more such good objects in the future :)

Kicks balls! :D

Only prob is teh shader which looks like plastic, some missing muscles at the feet and yellow teeth :D dang use a brush lol, jk.

other than that, excellent!

It does kick balls, but the plastic look kills most of the good stuff.Just tweak them textures abit son.Still real cool image.

Thanks, everyone for your comments. I have drastically reduced the specularity of the skin to avoid the plasticky look. With regards to the lighting, maybe its a bit over dramatic, but that was what I was trying to achieve anyway and because of that, some of the details might have been lost.

As for the feet, I've gotten a lot of comments over its size- which I have rectified but was ultimately cropped out of the picture in the end, LOL

Here's an updated render-

I don't think the veins on his arm, the are way to much curves in it, just look at your own arm,

about his second pose

I think his right arm needs to be further back so that the sword goes to the other side of this face.... not sure though... still looks great:)

Great work Marc, the only thing that bothers me is the running pattern of the arm veins. Looking and my own after a workout they aren't so "squiggly" and for a character of this physique it's not really common. if there was anything I would fix that. Also your arm veins don't run only along the topside of the arm, rather it twists over the forarm and there's one big one running down the biceps. See attached. Great work tho

he looks really good, probably the best orc i've seen yet.

The only crit is the skin still, while the updated one looks better overall the skin is still very plain. Plus i'd expect him to be beat up, he looks too new and right off the assembly line and definately not how i picture these creatures. I'd expect scars, bruises, less than perfect equipment, dirt etc.

hey, if he's making up the creature, couldn't he also make up a new vein pattern? it isn't a human you know... :D

timgolnik
05-31-2003, 08:45 PM
crit: as with the first pose, the hands in the second pose don't look strained as much as they should. You might want to show some more muscle tension

Teyon
05-31-2003, 08:48 PM
Timgolnik, shhh. Nobody likes it when we point that out. lol.

To be honest thugh, it's based off a humanoid form so it's totally plausible that the general vein structure is similar.

hey man great work.

i was gonna say if you did a second render on a close up of its face it'd be great

then on page 2 you answered by request

Is fantastic :D

My goosh now that is impressive. I love the texturing, especially the tattos, and the render has an artistic feel too it and the cloth infront of the groin area is just perfect along with the texturing.

The veins have to be fixed though...i reckon after using the reference pics provided by lildragon they'll be perfect.

Anyway great job there, i like it alot

Needs some sweat, goop, goo, blood, scars, wounds, slime, froth, etc to rough him up a bit.

Looks good though,excellent modeling!!!!

Actually if you take a look at some of the freakier ripped bodybuilders (like Andreas Munzer for instance) you'll see veins similar to that. Both in how squiggly they can be and the fact that they can be on either side of the arms. Thankfully most normal people don't look like that ;)

Beautiful shot BTW

Nice stuff Hand, ........inspirational. It makes me feel like going back and finishing mine.

Are you going to do anything more to him?
I agrre with the add more wear and tear to everything.

The variation on the tatoo fits nicely.

Been following your stuff since the post apocolyptic challange, and its always really good. what will you do next.

Hello and wecome to this forum.

The only problem that i really see in this character that no one really mentions is that if you look at the right leg, you will notice that the bump map is a little too much. I would suggest to lover that bump map a bit so his skin is a little more smoother.

That is all for this character, i dont see anything more in it..

Good job and take care...

Whoa, I am a little surprised by the volume of response after only one day. Yeah, I have to agree I overdid it on the veins on the arm. Normal veins would tend to be less squiggly then this. I think this only happens on those hyper muscled bodybuilders. I'll have to fix it.

I am also a little lazy on the textures on the body, more dirt and imperfections would have made everything looked better. I guess it is missing out scars and warts of that sort. Another fix.

As for the muscles on the arm, its not perfect yet as I still have to tweak the rigging. In fact there's still a lot of tweaking to be done for the rigging:thumbsdow

All in all, I was sort of rushing it a little at the end, trying to finish it before I run out of steam and get distracted by something else. I need to take a break for a while before I come back and fix all this.

I'm planning to build myself a new computer at the end of the week, so the rest of this week will probably be spent on backing up my files and transfering my files to the new machine.

Thanks for all the encouragements, comments and critiques. I was hoping to meet the Expose deadline, don't think I'll make it now.

Nope, it was the episode where Bart brings Santa's Little Helper to class and he gets loose in the air ducts.

Good model.

Skin texture could look less like plastic. It feels like his skin is hard and smooth. It might be the highlights that are causing this. Perhaps subtle variation in the skin tones.

Keep it up, good work!
