that depends. if you are utilizing certain tools in max that could be easy to do. character sets in max allow you set a skin pose that you can return to at any time if you need to tweak your skinning or modify anything. character studio also has a a similar feature. but if you are not using any of these features it may be a little more difficult. would you happen to have a file where you have not animated your bones or changed them from their original pose? that would be the only way i can think of right now to get your original pose back.

Here's a tip: you don't need to be using the character system to use set skin pose! Just select your bones, then Alt+right-click to bring up the animation quad. Hit "set skin pose" to set the default pose, and "assume skin pose" to restore it. I've used it even on advanced bone rigs and it works like a charm. Simple!

Oh, well then! Sorry, I tend to forget that there are other versions than the one I'm using:p You'll be looking for freeze transform and reset transform, then. They should still be located on the animation (alt+right-click) quad. When everything is posed the way you want as the "default pose", select everything and use freeze transform. WARNING: using this may destroy any keyframes you have set!!! It's really intended to be used prior to doing any animation. After using freeze transform, you can get back to your default pose by using reset transform.
Freeze/reset transform are really sort of an ugly workaround, and in my experience they don't always work as expected. But in Max4 it's all you've got. When/if you upgrade to R5 and use the skin pose stuff, you'll never look back;)
Good luck!
